So it's time to total up the returns on the awards season. This year's winners of the most awards were: picture, "A Place in the Sun," actress, Vivien Leigh, "A Streetcar Named Desire," Marion Brando of the same film squeaked through with the most awards in the male division, but it was a wide-open and inconclusive race. The "award awards" are based on the selections made by 24 different polls, magazines, critics groups, etc. Some of the honors are dealt out for best pictures and performances, some for popularity (or unpopularity), some for the best contribution to something or other. Miss Leigh wanted away who all awards for her performance as she faded southern belle. Those selecting her were the New York and San Francisco cities, Look Magazine, the General Federation of Women's clubs and the Associated Press and Film Daily polls of film critics. June Allison won second honors, but on the basis of popularity, not performance. She was selected the most popular actress by Daily poll. "Streetcar" chats three awards—York and San Francisco and the AP poll. Dahabee was the Christian Movie money-maker of rioty. Single w American in Patina "La Rueda," "Ra Show Host." June Allison won second honors, out on the basis of popularity, not performance. She was selected the most popular actress by Modren Screen, Country Gentleman and Box Office magazines. An award apiece was given to Shelley Winters, Jan Sterling, Doris Day, Jane Wyman, Anne Baxter and Susan Hayward. ESTHER WILLIAMS comes out even. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave her a plus as the world's most popular actress, but the Women's Press club slipped her a minus as the most uncooperative. Marlon Brando is a bare (that's a joke) winner among the actors. He was cited three times—by the San Francisco critics and the AP and Film Daily polls. Two-time winners are John Wayne, Bing Crosby and Fredric March. Those who got single awardee were John Derek, William Holden, Kirk Douglas, Richard Basechart, Arthur Kennedy, Mario Lanza, Gregory Peck and Alan Ladd. Frank Sinatra holds down the cellar position with a minus one. These counts gals of the Hollywood press again. "A Place in the Sun" is a solid winner on the awards circuit. It was honored by five citations—the National Board of Review, Screen Directors Guild, Hollywood Foreign Correspondents association, Cleveland erities and Film erites. McPadden casting a lone opposition vote the county supervisors granted a three-year permit yesterday for J. R. Weir to move his garage from the Santa Ana Freeway right of way south of Anasheim and relocate it on property he owns on Harbor Blvd. north of Katella rd. The new site is just within the boundaries of Supervisorial District 2, but Chairman Willis Warner, who represents that district, said he had no recommendation regarding the permit. McPadden said that some of the opposition to the new location came from residents of the third district, which he represents, so he made a motion to deny the permit. There was no second to the motion. Supervisor Willard Smith of Orange then moved that the permit be granted and this motion carried, with McPadden voting "No." McPadden also was the lone opposition to the motion passed by the supervisors denying permit for oil drilling on a site at Costa Mesa. The county planning commission had received application to permit five wells there but had whittled the number down to one well and gave that one a favorable recommendation to the supervisors.
