Corona del Mar-Phoenix Bigamist Loses One Wife, Supports Other
Floyd B. McCombs of Corona del Mar and Phoenix today had lost one of his two wives by court annulment and was trying to free himself of a bigamy charge instigated by the other wife, on the ground that the statute limitations barred prosecutions. The bigamits's marriage took place more than three years ago.
Superior Judge Kenneth E. Morrison, who is trying the case without a jury, had under advisement the question raised by McComb's attorney, Robert Webb, that the statute of limitations had run in the case. Deputy District Attorney Walter Steiner raised the point that the crime of bigamy is a "continuing offense" and the statute of limitations would not apply because the offense was not discovered until more than three years after the marriage.
McCombs had married Mrs. Mona McCombs of Phoenix some 30 years ago. In 1947 he married Mrs. Alva Q. McCombs of Corona del Mar, while posing as a retired Navy doctor, she said: He actually was a retired pharmacist's mate. Following his recent arrest on a grand theft charge, Mrs. Alva McCombs discovered papers in his effects that disclosed the existence of the wife in Phoenix. She immediately investigated and the two wives compared notes, which resulted in the bigamy charge.
Mrs. Alva McCombs recently was awarded an annulment of her marriage and Mrs. Mona McCombs was granted a decree of separate maintenance by which she is to be paid $75 per month. McCombs, who did not contest either suit, has been cited to appear in court next Friday on complaint that he has not made a preliminary payment which was ordered prior to the trial.

The employee group has planned a big "Demonstration Day" for May 17 at the courthouse, when the functions and procedures of government will be explained and demonstrated to citizens.

Referring to the local project, he said: "It is indeed a splendid idea, which I hope will continue to be adopted by other county governments. I send you my best wishes for the continued success of this project."

It is now a major project of the state association of county employees, each county competes every year for a large trophy donated by two Orange co-employees, Ernest Wooster and Arthur Anderson, two years after the trophy is awarded for showing in improved efficiency and in demonstrating county commitment to the people.

Crabgrass Control Easiest Now
Successful control of crabgrass in lawns requires treatment in March and April. Young crabgrass seedlings can be easily killed now without harming desirable lawn grasses.
Chemicals such as potassium cyanate or phenyl mercuric are selective in their action. Reports Farm Advisor A. H. Holland of the Agricultural Extension service. They are sold as Scutl, Tat-C-Lect and other trade names.
Treatment is usually ineffective if delayed until late summer when the crabgrass is old and first begins to be conspicuous. Later applications during the summer may be necessary since crabgrass seed may continue to germinate. Directions must be followed closely. If too much chemical is applied the lawn grass may show some browning, but this usually disappears within a week or two unless heavy damage dosages are used.
