It Takes Fancy Costumes
To Suit Esther Williams
By BOB THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD UP—Today let's talk about Esther Williams' bathing suits. I mean the suits, not what's in them.
The custodian of such matters is an attractive lady named Florence Hackett. She has been handling Esther's swim suits, web and dry, year in and year out, for most of the amphibious star's movie career. And she has problems.
"Take that suit Esther had to wear in 'Skirts Ahoy,'" the wardrobe official cited. "She plays a Wave in the picture and there was a scene in which she swam in the regulation Navy suit. It's made of plain cotton jersey with no lining. The suits are designed for Waves to use when men aren't around. Well, when Esther wore it in the water, it was just too sexy. The censors wouldn't allow it."
"So we had to get permission from the Navy to allow Esther to wear another, less revealing suit."
The problem with Esther's suits is that they get fancier and funnier. They have to be out of this world in design and yet swimable.
The one she's wearing in "The One Piece Suit" is a full-length affair of lastex covered with thousands of sequins.
"It has to be skin-tight," re-
is so tight that it wears when it's dry. I have a bucket of water in dressing room. I dip the water and help it on."
It takes several weeks to pace the suits. First, whipped up on the draw by such designers as Helen Rose. Then the department goes to work paring a model. The suit be tested in and out of It's largely a trial method. For instance, it supposed to wear a white underwater for "Texas." Several fabrics were tried reduced to a soggy mess. Among the other used was a Jersey woven ling silver, used in "Pink Song." It's a wonder Es sink in the thing, but I go too aquatic for that.
The suit designs gets expensive proposition, we consider that a fabric silver jersey costs $35 and usually six identities are made for each When several takes are Esther diving in the dry suit is needed ear The stand-in also requires same suit.
Because of her unique

The suit designs gets to be an expensive proposition, when you consider that a fabric like the silver jersey costs $35 a yard, and usually six identical suits are made for each number. Because of her unique work, I asked Miss Hackett if she liked to go swimming.
"No," she smiled. "As a matter of fact, I don't swim very well."
