HER ON THE EMBEZZLEMENT CARGE BECAUSE OF THE EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES INVOLVED /// Ed Wymm Lasts 50 Years By Keeping It Clean By BOB THOASER HOLLYWOOD (PA)—Fifty years ago, a stage-struck kid named Edwin Leopold ran away from his Philadelphia home to join a medicine show. Today he is still in show business, known to television fans as Ed Wymm. The half-century career of Ed Wymm, which will be commemorated on his TV show tomorrow night, has covered virtually every field of the entertainment business, including stage dramas and musicals, radio and movies. He has even played short engagements in a circus and a night club, so his scope would be complete. The only medium he kept playing is burlesque—and that significant. "I have never told an off-color joke to an audience," he remarked. "I have always put on the kind of a show that people could bring their children to. During my career, if newspapers have written editorials about my work, and many of them have remarked that I always put on a clean show. I'm proud of that." Wymm is so firm on this point that he once advised a fellow comedian in a George White musical: "Top could be one of the biggest comedians in the country if you would only drop your dirty material." White dubbed him "The Peracher" after that incident. "Ive seen young comedians" W. C. Fields, Chairman Bir Harry Lander, rante, Groucho M. Matinee Copyright, 1932, by Universal Radio & TV Features Wynn is so firm on this point that he once addressed a fellow comedian in a George White musical: "Top could be one of the biggest comedians in the country if you would only drop your dirty material." White dubbed him "The Parachter" after that incident. "I've seen young comedians make a big splash and then disappear," Wynn told me, "and many times the reason is that they have used off-color jokes. That's a bad mistake, because the greatest comedians are those who use only clean material." Speaking of great comics, I asked Wynn to name the top men of his 50-year history. He listed 20 comics or teams, and I present them in more or less chronological order: Water and Fields, Dr Wolf Hopper, McIntyre and Heath, Montgomery and Stone, Raymond Hitchcock, George M. Of the living members of the list, only Victor Moore has been in the business longer than Wymft. I asked the "Perfect Fool" about his reflections on TV comedy. "Let me draw an analogy from the other media," he began. "When comedy began on the stage, it was strictly slapstick. When a person got hit over the head with a bladder or fell, that was considered funny. But soon audiences became more educated, and the level of comedy rose. The same thing happened in the movies. The pie in the face, the Keystone Cop, the banana on the sidewalk: were funny. But now movie audiences consider such things corny. Radio, deprived of the sense of sight, at first relied on Dutch, Negro, Jewish and other dialects for comedy. "But as TV develops, the comedy will become smarter. The pics and selitzer water will be considered as coray as they are in the older mediums." I had but one more question to ask the veteran comedian: "What is funny?" He thought for a moment and then replied: "The unexpected. It's the final twist on a joke or an unexpected action. That's what is funny." Westminster Lions Hold First Meet The Westminster-Midway City Lions club that held their preliminary meeting at their sponsor's clubhouse, the Stanton Lions club, with Charles C. Rube as chairman, had their first independent meeting Tuesday night at the American Legion hall in Midway City. Charles R. Brothers, newly elected president and founder, presided and increased the original charter of 20 members who were inducted by the District Governor. Les Millar of Costa Mesa, to 28; 12 more have expressed intentions of signing up before April 1 when the charter will be closed. The second meeting will be Tuesday night, March 18, at the Legion hall which the group hope to make their headquarters, according to Brothers. The others are Christmas and Good Friday. Although both a legal and religious holiday—it honors the saint who converted Ireland to Christianity—the celebrations resemble those in the United States on the Fourth of July, with parades and political speeches. Irish pubs are closed on the three holidays, and in all the length and breadth of the Emerald Isle there's but one place to legally touse its patron saint: the Annual Dog Show at Bell's Bridge outside Dublin.
