Anaheim Gazette TUESDAY, MARCH 4, 1952 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA St. Michael’s to Hold Initial Lenten Service Tomorrow Night Tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., the Rev. Noble Owings, Vicar of St. Simon's Episcopal church in San Fernando, will speak at the evening prayer service on the subject "What Is the Bible?" This is the first in a series of Lenten talks by outstanding guest speakers on the fundamentals of the Christian faith. Mr. Owings was born in Baltimore, Md., in 1919 and received his A.B. at the University of Maryland in 1940. He received a B.D. from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1943, where he was vice president of the student body. His position was as Vicar of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Belmont, Calif., where he served from 1943 to 1945. While in this position, he guided the church to self-support and a parish status. The congregation elected him as their first rector. From 1945 to 1951 Mr. Owings was Rector of St. Paul's church in San Rafael. Beginning Nov. 1, 1951, he became Vicar of St. Simon's, in the fast growing city of San Fernando. On Thursday, there will be a service of Holy Communion at 10 a.m. followed by a meeting of the Helper's Guild, with Mrs. Frank Garrett presiding. The program will be colored slides on the life of Jesus. There will be a sandwich luncheon at noon. On Friday at 3:30 p.m. the Altar Guild will have a devotional service in the church and a prayer book study period. On Sunday, the Young Peoples' Fellowship will have a cooked food sale following the 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., and 7:30 p.m. services. New Egg Bulletin Published by UC A new Agricultural Extension bulletin "Make Eggs Pay" written Captain Amman told of efforts to organize a volunteer Civil Defense program, called the French Passive, just prior to World War II. When France was attacked, he explained, civilian participation was made mandatory and persons not engaged in actual war work were enrolled in what was then called National Protection. Reviewing France's experiences, General Robertson said: "Before war came to French soil the people were quite content to regard Civil Defense rather lightly. They were content with preparations for passive defense. They were prepared to seek shelter to save their lives if enemy planes attacked—and that's about all." "As far as it went it was good, but it didn't go far enough." "It took full scale war, fought on French soil, to arouse the people to a more aggressive national protection—an all-out Civil Defense effort to maintain factories in full production; not merely to survive but to get back off the floor after an attack and fight back with the weapon any enemy fears most—production." "That's what we must do, and we must do it now. For, as you will recall, France fell before the weight of superior German arms and manpower. The combined forces of the Allies—and the total productive capacity backing them up—were necessary to liberate France and again make her a free nation." "We dare not risk crippling America's production. Nowhere in the world today is there a sufficient force of free peoples to liberate us from an aggressor." "We must have a strong, well-organized and well-trained Civil Defense here in California." Next week's Office of Civil Defense statewide broadcast will give a graphic on-the-scene account of Civil Defense fire auxiliaries in action. New Egg Bulletin Published by UC A new Agricultural Extension bulletin "Make Eggs Pay" written by H. W. Longfellow, local farm advisor, has been printed this month by the University of California, College of Agriculture. The cover page illustrates Don Burdick, West Orange 4-H member, with his successful egg production project. The bulletin written primarily for 4-H club members states that the project will pay if certain steps are taken. Profit by what you put in your record book is advised. Good records help you succeed. Longfellow points out. Start the project when pullets begin to lay and continue it the year 'round with enough laying hens to supply the family's need for eggs. Select the breed you like best for your purpose instead of the one you have heard is "best." Breed chicks for replacements—don't buy "started" birds. Make a good selection of poultry, shelter and equipment. Get rid of non-layers and if you keep your flock healthy you should be reasonably sure of success, Longfellow says. GOP Outnumbers Demos in County Registration of Orange county voters totals 93,032, it was reported today by County Clerk B. J. Smith. The number represents an increase of nearly 2000 above the voting list on March 1, 1950. Republicans held their registration lead with 47,847 as compared to 41,762 Democrats. April 10 is the deadline for registering to vote at the primary election, June 3, Smith announced.
