Hollywood Stars Coming to Full-Streets
And Crew Get Official Welcome at La Palma
The Twinks got Anaheim's first official glad-hand of welcome this morning as city and chamber officials joined Fred Haney and his Hollywood Stars in informal pre-noon ceremonies at La Palma park stadium.
The brief ceremonials, occasioned by the first day of full strength team workouts, saw city officials also extend an invitation to the Stars to be guests of honor at a Chamber banquet at the Elks club on March 10, date of the Twinks first exhibition game at La Palma. Branch Rickey has also been sent an invitation to the dinner.
Meanwhile, yesterday and today the Hollywooders hopped on the training schedule they'll follow all this week; general workout from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., usually followed by a practice game. The open-to-the-public sessions will be pointing toward the first scheduled practice tilt when the Stars tangle with the Pittsburgh Pirate regulars here on March 10.
Eleven rookies, all dropped over the weekend from Rickey's Pirates at San Bernardino, were scheduled to report to the Anaheim camp today. The 11, all pitchers, are: Don Cochran, Chuck Benne, Leon Beran, Frank Hollerna, and Jack Maddy; catchers Dick Wilson and infielders Dave Montgomery, Roy Lefevre, Frank Van Berkleo, Milt Graff, and Jim Rice.
At warmups yesterday, hurlers Lee Anthony, Gordon Maltzberger
WELCOME STARS—Anaheim officialdom, led by the cream of the local beauty crop, turned out this noon to welcome Fred Haney and the Hollywood Stars to La Palma park. Kneeling are, left, Dianne Cash, Miss Slick Chick of 1951, and Patl Averill, runner-up. Standing, from left, are: Charlie McCallum, Bob Borden, Bus McCoy, Don Derrr, Pete Wisser, Dick Gay, Oscar Hey-

At warmups yesterday, hurlers Lee Anthony, Gordon Maltzberger and Joe Krolovich did the tossing and the Stars held their first batting practice. Clarence Rowland, president of Pacific Coast league baseball, was among several hundred people who watched drills.
Also making their first appearance Sunday were newcomers Dan Montgomery, Larry New and Frank VanBurkleo; outfielders Carlos Bernier, and Dick Wilson; and catchers Eddie Malone, Dick Lepeman and Mike Sandlock.
The squad is now rated at full-strength despite the failure of Pinky Woods to make a retirement decision and two Stars still missing. Pitcher Johnny Lindell and outfielder Frank Kelleger will report here later this week.
HS Baseball Squad Opens With Covina
Anaheim high school's varsity hornhiders take the lid off their 32 pre-season "season" tomorrow as they take on Covina at 3 p.m. on Clayes field.
John Wallin's baseballers, with only a few scant weeks of practice under their belts, rate strictly unknown qualities in their game against the Colts. Wallin, accordingly, plans to use a good share of the men on the squad.
Men who will see major action include first sacker and captain Carl Hatfield, 2nd baseman Bennie Mattox and Lupe Gonzales, 3rd

Despite a bad start that gave a four-man mile relay team a 30-yard lag, the Colonists finished second, still closing ground rapidly. The squad was composed of Bruce Hoerner, Don Davis, Ira Webber and Larry Kirchmann. The latter three were on the team that set the event record last year.
In other events, the Colonists took consistent 5th places, excepting only the shuttle relay which was scratched when Eli Peralta pulled leg muscle.
Final score:
Fullerton 21; Redlands 15; Downey 14; South Pasadena 11; Bellflower 10½; Newport 6; Rosemead 5; Anaheim 5; Colton 4; Huntington Beach 3; Covina 2; and Lynwood 2.
basemen Don Gonzales and George Bishop, shortstop Gayle Herbel, outfielders Jim Holve, John Steinborn, and Jim Roberts, pitchers Dick Ramella and Val Wiethorn, and catchers Fred Head and Eddie Herrera.
The AUmen will meet Long Beach Poly Thursday here.
HS Tennis Team To Face Covina
In their second practice match of the year, Bill Cook's Anaheim union high school netters will meet racketmen from Covina tomorrow afternoon on AU courts.
Because of shuttling of playing positions, Cook declines to name team spots. A second match has been scheduled for Thursday as the Colonists meet Long Beach Jordan there.
The Recreation Department announced today that entry blanks for the Second Annual Los Angeles Spring Invitational Tennis Tournament have been received and may be picked up during the regular Saturday tennis classes at the City Park courts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The tournament which is open to players classed as "B" or lower in the Mid-Cities League, will be played on the Griffith Park courts in Los Angeles, starting on March 15 and 16, and continuing on successive week ends until all events are completed. Men's singles and doubles, women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles will be on the agenda.
Local players were also reminded that the monthly meeting of the Anaheim Tennis Club will be held tonight from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Williams at 405 West Sycamore st. This will be the first meeting conducted by the newly elected officers, so all members are urged to attend. A cordial invitation is extended to any person interested in tennis, regardless of his ability at the game, to attend and become acquainted with others who are attempting to expand tennis activity in Anaheim.
The Brooklyn Dodgers' 192 double plays last season was the third highest total in National League history. The Cincinnati Reds in 1928 and again in 1931 produced 194 twin killings.

BURBANK (F)—The St. Louis Browns played an intrasquad game yesterday and Coach Bill Normans' team took a 5-0 decision from Coach Bob Scheffling's outfit.
Ned Garver, the Brown's 20-game winner last season, and usually a slow starter, doled out only two hits in four rounds. Southpaw Gene Bearden gave up 10 hits and all the runs in his four innings.
PHOENIX (F)—Sal (The Barber) Maglie, ace New York Giants' pitcher, is going to get another day of rest between starts this season—and he doesn't like it a bit. He wants plenty of work.
Furthermore, he prefers to be in against the top pitchers of the league.
"When you're matched against the good ones, you find yourself pitching a better game," he said today. "When you're facing a second stringer, you're likely to let down a little, figuring your fellows will get a bundle of runs."
PASADENA (F)—The Chicago White Sox' three bonus rookies, representing an outlay of $140,000, have made an excellent impression on manager Paul Richard so far.
They are pitchers Floyd Penfold and Terry Loy of South Gate, and catcher J. W. Porter of Oakland. Each is 19.
Scout Hollis Thurston is convinced that Porter, a 6 foot 2 inch, 188 pounder, will stick with the Sox this spring.
Penfold pitched for Waterloo, Ia., of the Three-Eye league last year and had a 10-record midway win.
No Talent—No Wrestling
The Orange County club will remain "dark for wrestling."
Promoted Sybil Will today lack of top uncertainty weather prompt temporary "shutdown."
The arena is expected re-opened in two or three featuring top talent.
IRVINE LAKE TO OPEN
Irvine Lake, closed for two years because of tiers, will open again May 1st.
Penfold pitched for Waterloo, Ia., of the Three-Eye league last year and had a 10-record midway in the campaign before slumping to a final 12-11.
Loy, who quit school at USC to join the Sox spring camp, drew this praise from Coach Doc Kramer:
"He is lightning fast, has a wicked curve and a real good knuckler. He will need some seasoning in the minors, but he'll be back."
MESA, Ariz. (P)—Back under the guidance of Chicago Cub Coach Charley Root, pitcher Luven Fear, a rookie righthander, is given a good chance to make the grade this spring.
Fear's overhand delivery was changed to a sidearm style by Root at Des Moines in 1950 and he blazed to nine straight victories. Last year with last-place Springfield, Mass., Fear fell off to an 8-9 mark.
But now that he's back under the wing of Root, he's given a good chance to stick with the Cubs.
TUCSON, Ariz. (P)—Rookie outfielder Jim Fridley of Phillips, W. Va., has a "good chance" to stay all season with the Cleveland Indians, Manager Al Lopez said today.
The job he's after: right field, a perennial Indian problem, Bob Kennedy and Harry Simpson have alternated there but haven't hit. Fridley hit 299 for Dallas last season and has never played higher than Class AA ball.
Six foot one and 210 pounds, Fridley looks like a football player. He was—played tackle for the University of West Virginia.
SAN FRANCISCO (P) — The Pittsburgh Pirates opened official spring training today with three players unsigned.
They are pitchers Murry Dickson, 20-game winner last year, and Jim Walsh and home run slugger Ralph Kiner.
General Manager Branch Rickey branded both hurlers holdouts. He has given Kiner permission to discuss his contract with the club's president after reporting.
Latest to sign were outfielder George Metkovich and Pitcher Mel Queen. Metkovich, who hit 293 in 120 games with the Pirates last season, reportedly got $14,000. Terms of Queen's contract were not revealed.

Casey Stengel has Outfielders to Burn
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—Manager Casey Stengel fired a broadside at the rest of the American League today when he declared without equivocation that his world champion New York Yankees had the best outfield in the circuit despite the loss of Joe DiMaggio.
"I've got five outfielders, anyone of whom could be a regular on any other club," Casey said proudly. "Show me five better than Mickey Mantle, Jackie Jenson, Hank Bauer, Gene Woodling and Bob Cerv. They're all good. They're all young. They can all hit with power, run, throw and field.
