British Consul Calls US Britain’s Senior Partner in World Affairs
In a succinct talk on British-American relations last Friday night, Robert Henry Hadow, British consul general for the Pacific Southwest, reaffirmed Britain's partnership in world affairs with the United States, referring to Zion Lutheran Schedules Series Of Lent Services
Beginning Ash Wednesday, tomorrow, a series of special Lenten services will be held every Wednesday evening at 7:30 o'clock till Easter, at Zion Lutheran church, Emily and Chartres, Rev. Edwin H. Pflug, pastor of the church, has chosen "The Way of the Cross" as the general theme for the series.
“Taking our texts directly from the story of the Cross, the sacred Passion history, our hearers will be led in spirit along the way of the cross from the Upper Room to cross-crowned Calvary,” Pastor Elug said. “As each Wednesday evening we pause at a different spot on the journey we will consider: 'This the Savior did for me and my salvation.' And those of us who faithfully attend and allow ourselves to be led along this pass through cross to crown, will come away refreshed and strengthened and built up in their most holy faith; encouraged also to walk with Jesus over thorny paths of life and to show their America as “the senior partner.” He spoke to a large group of faculty, students, and guests of the International Relations Clubs of Fullerton Junior college and Orange Coast college at a Seal Beach restaurant. The occasion was the first annual international dinner co-sponsored by the two student-groups.
After delineating Britain's place in current world affairs, including her partnership in future goals with the United States, Hadow stressed three major factors in the future success of the U.S. and Britain as leaders of the free-world in combating communism.
First, said Hadow, we must recognize that Asia demands equal standing with the West, if it is to be included in the free world. Second, the West must have something concrete to offer Asiatics to offset Communistic propaganda against exploitation by the West. And third, American capital must become interested in helping develop the so-called backward countries.
"I have no hesitation in saying that the Asiatics are no longer ready to accept any partnership with the white races anywhere except on the basis of strict equality," emphasized Hadow.
He urged, however, that nations should not be given the opportunity for complete independence until they are ready for it. “If a nation is given political freedom before it is ready, the only result, as Moscow well knows, will be another people's revolution," he Local Children To Sell ‘Have A Heart’ Tags
Local children will sell heart tags are Saturday, March 1, when Volunteers of America conduct "Haye A Heart" day to raise funds for destitute mothers with children and other unfortunates in care of the organization.
The local drive is being sponsored by a committee composed of the following: Supt. Paul W. Cook, Rev. Al Casebeer, Rev. Patrick Pierce, Rev. Berthold Jacksteelt, M. A. Gauer, L. H. Paxton, Victor G. Loly, Mrs. Milton Spencer, Mrs. Ray Ortez, Mrs. C. I. Andrews, and Mrs. D. B. Baker.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bourne will be in charge of young people's work in headquarters at the Boy Scout Office.
The Volunteers of America, founded 55 years ago, has received nationwide commendation on its humanitarian activities.
According to Governor Warren, the services rendered by the organization "constitute a force which is of fundamental importance to our nation." President Truman also is among the group's supporters.
In Southern California the Volunteers of America maintains homes for children, homes for the aged, homes for destitute girls, summer camps for underprivileged children, and relief stations where food, lodging, clothing and medical aid are provided.
The organization includes a prison department, endorsed by State Director of Corrections Richard A. McGee, for the rehabilitation of prisoners and parolees, and aid to their families when left without means of support.

We cordially invite all to share with us this spiritual treat!
Favorite Lenten hymns such as "The Old Rugged Cross," "Rock of Ages" and others will be sung by the assembly, while special music will be furnished by the Zion Lutheran school. Tomorrow night the Senior Choir under the direction of Mrs. Walter Kempin will render "Beneath the Cross of Jesus." The first stop on the way of the cross will be Gethsemane.
Mardi Gras Takes Over New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Merry-makers crammed this city of fun and frolic today for a final dose of that carefree madness that is Mardi Gras.
The carnival season reaches its climax today and tonight. It begins Jan. 7 and blossomed into full swing Feb. 17 with its first street parade.
Until the stroke of midnight, novelty rules this gay city of the Bayou country. Although midnight officillay ends the holiday, many fun-loving visitors and natives alike will continue their hi-jinks into the wee hours Wednesday.
The American Point Four program and a corallary British program of lending technical know-how to undeveloped countries is the principle economic assistance the West has to offer Asia, he said. Asia's resources, however, can be developed only with the aid of American capital. Previously, American capital has had little interest in foreign ventures because of its great home field of investment.
In outlining Britain's position in world affairs, Hadow acknowledged the world leadership of the United States. He pictured the British commonwealth today as an association of free and independent countries. Their allegiance to Britain is of their own free will. The era of colonialism is over, he stressed.
In a question period following the talk, Hadow was asked to explain Britain's recognition of Red China. This he did in terms of the long established British and American policy of recognizing without approving, "de facto" governments which have established their supremacy over a country.
Of the Suez troubles, Hadow said that Britain was rendering a service in protecting airfields close enough to Russian oilfields for shuttle-bombing with atom bombs. This is the greatest threat to Russian war potential, he emphasized.
Hadow was introduced by Dr. Basil H. Petersen, president of Orange Coast college, after welcoming remarks by Dr. H. Lynn Sheller, director of Fullerton Junior college. The dinner meeting was hosted by Vladimir Almendinger, FJC student president of the International Relations club. Perry Spanos, Orange Coast presi-

mitos area. He also disclosed that run-off from the Richfield-Atwood area contributed as much water to the Anaheim flood waters as Carbon Canyon did.
He pointed out that a relief channel running from Carbon Canyon southwest across the county to the San Gabriel river, 14 miles long, would be extremely expensive to construct since it would have to cross eight state highways, six railroad tracks and twenty-odd county roads.
Anaheim City Administrator Keith Murdoch pointed out that Anaheim's drainage system adequately handled the city's own rainfall, but that it could not take care of the additional water from Carbon Canyon and the Richfield-Atwood area.
A. J. Schutte, chairman of the Chamber’s Conservation and Flood Control committee, who presided over the meeting, credited every group and agency concerned with the flood problem with complete cooperation with the City of Anaheim and the committee.

4-H Enrollment Closes March 1
The Orange county 4-H club enrollment will close on March 1.
Boys and girls between the ages of 10 to 21 can get into this program by acting now, says Farm Advisor W. A. Humphrey. For information on how to enroll ask the 4-H club leader in your community, any boy or girl in 4-H work, or the Agricultural Extension Service office, 1104 West 8th st., Santa Ana.
Offered in the 4-H club programs are opportunities for boys and girls interested in raising plants and animals, cooking and sewing, to learn more about these subjects with the help of voluntary adult leaders. Through fellowship with others, meetings and tours, much valuable training and character development can be gained. A wide variety of projects are carried such as poultry, rabbits, dairy, garden, electricity, tractor maintenance, cooking, sewing and safety. Along with the project a record is kept of what is done, the costs and profits of the project. Ample chance to participate in contests is provided, thus giving the boys and girls a chance to strive to do better.
