THE START SHE'S GOING TO GET WHEN SHE SEES SOMEONE FROM THE TOWN SHE SO RECENTLY FLED.... Clark Gable and Other 'Old Men' Resent Inference They Can't Woo HOLLYWOOD (UP)—An Italian film beauty's remark that some Hollywood actors are too old to pitch convincing woo drew snickers and snorts from the local movie colony. "It's ridiculous to see a man old enough to be your grandfather playing an ardent lover," actress Sylvana Pampanini told an interviewer in Rome. She named Clark Gable, Charles Boyer, Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Paul Muni and Ronald Colman as examples who, "stripped of their movie glamor, would seem pitiful in the arms of a woman." Said Miss Pampanini: "Hollywood needs a bunch of new lovers—young and virile, in the prime of their youth, not men who were born in the last century." She added with a shudder, "it's incumbent being kissed by an old man." Clark Gable thought Miss Pampanini's views "enormously funny," but wouldn't comment saying: "I'm not going to get mixed up in THAT." Mrs. Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, whose husband was yachting yesterday, rose to the defense of the local males. "Some of these girls will do anything for publicity," she said. Think there's life in the old boy yet... after all it took the years to know what they were doing, and now that they know we women should be thankful." Mrs. Charles Boyer, who swered the phone while her band was showering, said she was "quite nauseated" by Miss Pampanini's remarks, adding: "I seems to be quite young and a bit ginner. She's quite welcome her opinion." After checking with Boyer, she said "he thinks the same." Mrs. Spencer Tracy said she didn't think her husband would comment. "I think it's pretty silly. As a matter of fact they are quite a number of young girls who rather like older men," she said. Mrs. Colman wouldn't bother her husband either. She said "whoever this Miss Pumpernickel of 1952 is, if she wants the bobble-soxers I'd say let her have them." Cooper and Muni were reportedly out of town. Their wives weren't available either. Rosenbergs' Hopes Lie in High Court Despite the green light given the European Army by the Atlantic Allies at their Lisbon conference, these officials said that recent political developments, especially in France, have set back the previous timetable calling for combat-ready German troops by 1954. The sources here explain the situation thus: The Germans will need two full years from the starting point to call up, arm and train 300,000 to 400,000 men to serve with the six-nation European Army. The outlook now is that not a single German soldier will be drafted before early 1953 and perhaps months later. The Germans plan to start their new army with small units of volunteers who later will take over the training of draftees. Nor do these prospects for German manpower for western defense take into account a possible change in the West German government. Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's pro-rearmament coalition faces an election battle in the summer of 1953 with the bitterly anti-rearmament Socialists. The Socialists warned last weekend that they would continue to oppose German participation in the western defense system "under present conditions," even if they take over the government next year. Mrs. Colman wouldn't bother her husband either. She said "whoever this Miss Pumpernickel of 1952 is, if she wants the bobble soxers I'd say let her have them." Cooper and Munni were reportedly out of town. Their wives weren't available either. Rosenbergs' Hopes Lie in High Court NEW YORK (AP)—Julius a Ethel Rosenberg, husband and wife sentenced to die for giving Russia atomic secrets, looked at the U.S. Supreme Court today to save them from the electric charge. The Rosenbergs, first American ever doomed for espionage outside a military courtroom, planned to appeal to the nation's highest tribunal after a U.K. Court of Appeals yesterday to hold unanimously their espionage convictions and death sentences. Defense Attorney Emmanuel Blöck said he "definitely" would take the case to the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court ruled against the Rosenbergs, only commutation of their sentences could keep the president from dying in the electric chair at Sing Sing (N.Y.) prison. Total membership of all traitors in Britain is now about 9¼ million persons.
