MODERN APPROACH—A moveable white birth seryer, three feet high, 20 inches deep and five and one-half feet long is a very practical addition to the Jerry Warde household on So. Walnut ave. It creates the illusion of an entry hall at the front door while providing needed storage space for table linens and silver.—(Gazette photo by Kreidt) Two Anaheim Families Solve Small Home Problems with Room Dividers By JOAN S. WHITE What the Glen Castos wanted in their house was a more clear-cut division between living and dining areas. Joyce and Jerry Warde's house needed an entrance hall and more storage space. Both families solved their individual problems with a room divider. These days, a room divider goes directly against the trend toward open planning. The so-called "open plan" gives a feeling of spaciousness to a small house. Leave out partitions, say the experts, so that traffic can flow freely, and the house may then be arranged in areas instead of in rooms. This theory works out well on paper, but family living demands privacy and a place to retreat occasionally. A solid partition of two also helps with furniture arrangement. In the main; we are well satisfied with the homes our architects have given us, aren't we? The picture window has won us over as has the large amount of living space that is crammed into the confines of carefully measured square footage. But little annoyances do arise. We get the feeling that all that space needs to be broken up to be put to more effective use. Here is where the cleverly conceived room divider enters the picture. PLYWOOD PLANTER The Glen Castos found that an attractive planter which juts out from the wall some four feet can be easily built with simple tools, and very effectively separates dining space from the living room proper. Theirs is made with a base of combed plywood, a rectangle eight inches in depth to fit into the space between living and dining room rugs. A galvanized metal pan for house plants fits into the plywood base at a height of about three feet. Above the planter is a lattice work made from fishing pole bamboo set six inches apart. The bamboo has been finished naturally and fits into a light framework of 2"x2" boards painted green. Local nurserymen suggested a pure peat moss bed for the plants and it takes only occasional watering to keep the following exotic ornamental plants thriving: tri-leaf wonder, variegated croton, dubia philodendrum, rabbit track, difenbachia, pefferonia, watermelon begonia, phoenix phellina palm, nyphitis and grape ivy. BLEACHED SIRCH SERVER The Warde's problem involved the dining room too, but in a different way. In their home, the front door opens directly into the dining room and guests must pass through this room to get to the living room. Placement of a coat closet leaves little space for the traditional buffet. It did, that is, until a specially constructed room divider was introduced. It is a long narrow piece of furniture which the Wardes call a "server." Made of bleached birch to match the rest of the dining room furniture, it is set with its back toward the front door to form a small entry way, and at the same time provide storage space for linens and glassware. Jerry Warde, a cabinet maker by trade, built one long drawer across the top to accommodate silverware and table linen. Its length allows tablecloths to be stored there with a minimum of folding. Beneath the drawer, sliding doors on a metal track conceal a special partition for table pads, and several shelves for crystal and china. Unlike a permanent partition, this versatile server can be moved when necessary, and the Warde's like the idea so well, they are planning an all-purpose desk to divide a den alcove from the living room. "I feel that social and spiritual conditions today demand a great resurgence of evangelism, and it is my conviction, with deep regrets at having to leave my congregation, that I should answer the call of God and re-enter this field of special service," said Dr. MacArthur when he recently resigned as pastor of the Fountain Avenue Baptist church of Hollywood and entered full time evangelistic work. During the four years he spent at the Fountain Avenue church, Dr. MacArthur received more members—almost 1000 in number—into the fellowship of the church than had been received during its entire previous history beginning in 1923. A great evangelistic crusade conducted in Hollywood by Dr. MacArthur during the summer of 1950 brought such signal results that the facilities of the church thereafter were inadequate to care for the congregation and all services since that time were held in the Melrose theater. Fuller, founder and director of the world famous "Old Fashioned Revival Hour," as "Today's man for today's challenge," Dr. MacArthur has been widely used in evangelistic campaigns throughout the United States and Canada. Before accepting the Fountain ave. pastorate, he was supervisor of evangelists for the Fuller Evangelistic Foundation and previous to that served as an evangelist in the Extension department of the Moody Bible Institute. Dr. MacArthur is the founder and director of the well known "Voice of Cavlary" radio program, one of the West Coast's most popular religious broadcasts, now in its tenth year of consecutive broadcasting. In addition, he has also authored a number of books and numerous articles that have appeared in evangelical publications in America, Great Britain and Australia. A college and seminary graduate, Dr. MacArthur is highly qualified for his ministry. His musical abilities and interest in athletics, dating back to his college days, in addition to his dynamic preaching, especially qualify him for work with young people. He has been a popular speaker at "Youth for Christ" rallies from one end of the nation to the other and has been widely used as a Bible and evangelistic conference speaker. The general public is invited to hear Dr. MacArthur. A well staffed and well equipped nursery will be provided at all services. A listening room is also available for parents who wish to stay with their little ones. The Golden Text is from the Psalms (35:9): "My soul shall be joyful in the Lord: it shall rejoice in his salvation." Matthew's Gospel records that two blind men followed Jesus, "crying and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us." Jesus said unto them, "Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened" (9:27-30). Citations from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy include: "Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever manifested through man, the Master healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the lame, thus bringing to light the scientific action of the divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving a better understanding of Soul and salvation" (p. 210). Butterworth of White Temple Methodist church will preach at the 7 o'clock Sunday night service on the theme, "Debunking Anti-Semitism." Most of us don't realize how thoroughly the late Nazis did their work of implanting the seeds of misconception and prejudice concerning the Jews," states the pastor. "I have been interested in research concerning popular statements about this minority group, and on Sunday evening will present my findings based on statistical factual surveys. Every Christian and every real American must be on guard less he be taken in by half-truths and stereotypes." At the 10:50 a.m. service; he will preach on "Faith For The Dark."
