For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth— Matt. 5:5. ABRAHAM LINCOLN—I was a dog of Gettysburg. I trotted near the train... And nosed among the officers who kicked me to my pain... A man came by... I could not see. I howled. The light was dim... But when I brushed against his legs, I liked the smell of him—MacKinlay Kantor, Lincoln at Gettysburg. BACKTRACKING—Just a year ago the Korean reds drove a wedge in the United Nations' lines on the central front. Several units were isolated... William Huscroft, 82, pioneer realtor died two weeks after he retired... Major Jennie Boone, 67, Santa Ana Salvation Army worker, was killed instantly by a car driven by Giraur Nazarian, Cal Tech graduate student. She apparently stepped onto the highway directly into the path of the oncoming car... Gilbert Kraemer Writer Who Survived Hiroshima Atom Bomb Describes Experience "Suddenly there came a bright light... It was just like looking directly into another sun... It was so very bright and yellow in color... It got very warm for just a few minutes after the flash. I started to run... Maybe I took three or four steps... I don't remember... Suddenly there came the noise... When I heard that sound I threw myself flat... "I lay on the ground about 10, maybe 15 seconds while the terrible wind from the bomb explosion broke all the windows... Everything was flying through the air... Broken glass... pieces of metal... boards... everything was falling all around me..." This is the beginning of the story of a young man who surviving over the effects of his second crippling auto accident. His leg is still in a cast, though... VIGNETTE — "Say, whatever became of your friend, Sam?" ... "Y'mean Sam——?" "Yeah," the kid who went to school with you at the Broadway school?" ... "He joined the fraternity." ... "What fraternity?" ... "The jailbird's fraternity—San Quentin." SHORT STORY—Bill Selfridge, ed the first atomic attack in history—Hiroshima, Aug. 6, 1945. He is Jack Dairiki, now 21, native of Sacramento and a student at Los Angeles City college. As the guest of Maj. Gen. Walter M. Robertson, State Director of Civil Defense, young Dairiki related the dramatic story during the Office of Civil Defense statewide broadcast Monday (February 11). Reviewing the graphic recital General Robertson pointed out that knowing the fundamentals of Civil Defense saved the lives many in Hiroshima that day. "Japan did develop an excellent defense plan," General Robertson said. "It taught self-protection and mutual aid. But they didn't start until after the first fire bombs fell on their cities. "We cannot afford to wait until the first one falls to start our preparedness." Dairiki related that in 1941, he was taken to Japan to visit his grandparents. Prevented by the war from returning to the United States he was placed in school and eventually, with fellow students assigned to a work-gang in a riff factory. He was on his way to work when the attack came. on the central front. Several units were isolated. William Huscroft, 82, pioneer realtor died two weeks after he retired. Major Jennie Boone, 67, Santa Ana Salvation Army worker, was killed instantly by a car driven by Giraur Nazarian, Cal Tech graduate student. She apparently stepped onto the highway directly into the path of the oncoming car. Gilbert Kracmer and Fred Schildneyer were injured in an auto accident. Mrs. Alice Fitch also was injured in a collision. Ralph McFadden became president of the Imperial Highway ass'n of which George Kellogg is secretary. Pvt. Ernest DeOchon, 17, was killed in action in Korea, his mother, Mrs. Adela Cruz, was informed. Frank Belmont, former Anaheim packing house operator, posted $5,000 bail on a grand theft charge growing out of the picking of fruit on a 16-acre Riverside orchard. The elusive Pants Burglar visited the homes of Don DeWitt and Don Sloune, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Markham were blessed by twins, a boy and a girl. Death took Philip F. Kaell in the 7th year of his life. That was a year ago today when Anaheim was dampened by .02 of an inch of rain. NEWSKETCHES — George Cohn who was associated with William Ripley's Anaheim Ace was in town. He's scouting for the San Diego Padres. Jackie Warner and his boss, Don Stewart, of the Ellay Angels stopped in at La Palma Park for a look-see at their rival's spring training camp. Ellay trains at Fullerton, y'know, and Fred Haney's Hollywood Stars take over Vic Ruedy's layout. Harold (Skeets) Gregg seems to be his old self in pre-spring training workouts. He may be playing for Oakland this season. Mrs. Irving (Anna) Milbrat who recently underwent a serious operation is doing right well. Salome Arias, the personable taxi driver, is gradually VIGNETTE — "Say, whatever became of your friend, Sam?" ... "Y'mean Sam——?..." "Yeah,' the kid who went to school with you at the Broadway school?" ... "He joined the fraternity." ... "What fraternity?" ... "The jailbird's fraternity—San Quentin." SHORT STORY—Bill Selfridge, the retired electrical contractor, saw the Gazetteer going into the postoffice the other day. "I've got a story for you," Bill said with a merry twinkle in his eye. "Yes," the Gazetteer replied. "Y'know, Olle Cole, the fellow who runs a gas station in Fullerton. Well, the other day one of his customers drove in. His car was boiling." "Must-a been hot." "'Say, Olle,' this fellow says, 'Y'better give me a lube job while you're at it.'" Olie went to work. He found a kitten caught in the fan belt. So he cuts the fan belt, frees the lettern, but he doesn't charge the customer for a new belt, because it wasn't his fault the little kitten found its way under the hood." "Did the cat live?" "Sure." Bill smiled. "A cat has nine lives. Its got eight more to go on." It's rumored about these parts that Daystrom Furniture Corp. will not occupy the new 250,000 square-foot plant built for them on E. South st., at the Santa Fe tracks, but that a new outfit will work on super-secret government contracts in the huge building. Four outfits have been featured by the rumor mill—Douglas Aircraft Co., Consolidated Aircraft Co., Kwikset Locks, Inc., and a paper cup manufacturer, Kwikset, however, says it is not now in the picture. Best indication is that the labor force to be employed will reach 600 persons. NITECAPSULE—Success may turn a man's head, but it never quite wrings his neck. DAIRIKI related that in 1941, he was taken to Japan to visit his grandparents. Prevented by the war from returning to the United States he was placed in school and eventually, with fellow students assigned to a work-gang in a riff factory. He was on his way to work when the attack came. Relating what happened after the first flash and explosion he said: "First of all, I couldn't see anything. The air was so full of dust nobody could see." He made his way to a cave shelter where, with others, he remained most of the day. Later he went to his grandfather's place. "Fires burned for three days before people were able to put them out. Many city blocks were completely burned—nothing remained but ruins. "Even two miles from the center of the explosion the house were all leaning in one direction from the blast." Dairiki attributed his survival to Civil Defense training. "It was the training I had how to protect myself that kept me from getting badly hurt—maybe getting killed," he said. "If I haven't dropped flat on the ground I could have been killed." Next week's Office of Civil Defense broadcast will present a Japanese-American girl who also survived the Hiroshima atomic bombing. HORSE ON LOOSE VICTORIA, B.C.(T)—A civil-law is being drawn up to give police more control over loosely horses. The move followed a recent incident when a rideries horse crashed through a red light and two stop signs, disrupting traffic. The American glass-blowing industry is centered in a dozen plants located in the eastern states. wood Stars take over Vic Ruedy's layout. Harold (Skeets) Gregg seems to be his old self in prespring training workouts. He may be playing for Oakland this season. Mrs. Irving (Anna) Milbrat who recently underwent a serious operation is doing right well. Salome Arias, the personable taxi driver, is gradually TRAVELING PLUGS—If you don't hear about the 1952 YMCA Finance Roundup, you'll hardly escape "seeing about" it when Anaheim's Yellow cabs or Orange and Black cabs go past. The traveling billboards are donated by Louis Henning's Paint Shop, Garey's Inc., Carmen's Flowers, Axle and Frame, K and L Service station, and Hadley's Bakeries and were arranged for by Taxi Neon, Inc., of Whittier. Shown discussing the signs are, from left: Louis Henniz, Carmen Lizarraga, Tommy Thomason and Carl Knapp. Workers reported 20 per cent of the $14,645 goal in with 7 per cent of the prospect cards reported Friday night. Another report meeting will be held at 9:29 tonight in YMCA building. (Gazette photo by Kreidt) HIROSHIMA Experience first atomic attack in his HIROSHIMA, Aug. 6, 1945.
