Scientist Tries To Get Parasites Into Country
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Dr. A. M. Boyce has rounded up several parasites that look "very promising" for combatting red, black and olive scales that plague orchardists.
The University of California scientist, head of the citrus experiment station at Riverside, gathered the parasites on a world tour.
However, before they can be put to work, he told a group of citrus growers yesterday, federal permission must be obtained to bring them into this country.
Then they would be tested in insect-proof rooms at the experiment station for their efficiency against the pests.
Possible Oil Shrink deficiency sprays may limit the natural resistance of trees to mites.
Tests show that some trees have almost complete natural immunity to attack by mites, while others are very ceptible, the station reports.
The station also reports control of the citrus black Mexico has greatly lessened danger that the pest may north.

Possible Oil Strike Looms Over Horizon of Entire Industry
DENVER (AP)—Possibility of a strike of a large portion of the oil industry loomed today.
The CIO Oil Workers International Union announced a strike because it is being prepared in support of the union's demands for a $2 deficiency sprays may lower natural resistance of citrus fruits to mites.
Tests show that some citrus trees have almost complete natural immunity to attack by red spiders, while others are very susceptible, the station reports.
The station also reports that control of the citrus black fly in Colorado has greatly lessened the number that the pest may move.
Avocado Tour To be Held In County
On Saturday, Feb. 9, the avocado section of the California Farm Bureau will hold an avocado field tour, reports Farm Advisor C. D. Gustafson. The tour will begin at the avocado variety plots, corner of E. Central and Berry sts., between La Habra and Brea at 10:00 a.m.
The tour will include stops where different phases of avocado culture will be discussed. Avocado varieties will be one of the main topics of discussion for the day. Both growers and research test plots of the Extension Service.
issued a statement declaring:
"For four and a half months we have tried to negotiate an increase but we have met only with arrogant refusal on the part of the companies to even talk seriously about a substantial raise."
The boost would amount to about a 12 per cent general hike. The average wage in the industry now is $2.10 an hour.
Knight said about 300 of the union's more than 600 bargaining units have been requested to take strike votes and prepare to strike.
Three-fourths of the members in a bargaining unit must vote in favor of a strike by secret ballot before that particular unit can strike.
Sea Gull Attacks Radio Owner
Insurance companies will have to rewrite their policies on hazards of the broadcasting industry now that KBIG is building its transmitter on Catalina Island, 22 miles off the coast of Southern California.
Consulting engineer Jay Tapp is performing his duties these days with a bandaged wrist, the result of an attack by an enraged seagull who had imbibed too deeply of the something-for-nothing philosophy. This particular parasitical bird made a few aerial passes at Tapp and KBIG owner-manager John Poole when they shoved off from Avalon for the mainland aboard the station's Chris-Craft cruiser La Belle the other day, then settled down on the after deck for the entire hour-and-a-half cruise. Arriving at Newport Harbor, Tapp indicated physically to his hitchhiker that this was the end of the line, only to receive a deep gash from a sharp and ungrateful beak as the visitor flew away.

Anaheim Seaman Stationed on U.S. Frontier
Life on one of America's last frontiers is the duty station of Paul L. Darshay, seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Darshey of 620 N. Clementine St., Anaheim, serving at the Naval Station, Kodiak, Alaska.
Darshay entered Naval service Nov. 28, 1950 and received recruit training at the Naval Training Center, San Diego. He was employed by the Daystrom Balbea Corp., in Fullerton before joining the Navy.
Kodiak, a large island off the southern coast of Alaska, was the capital of the Russian colonial empire before the United States acquired the territory. The island is the home of the famed Kodiak bear, largest carnivorous animal in the world.
The Navy's role in Alaska is manifold. It operates weather stations, ship repair units, air facilities and maintains a scientific research station and base camp for the Navy's oil exploration program.
