For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... For the love of money is the root of all evil.—I Tim, 11:10. ANAHEIM PASTIME—United Nations units neared the 38th Parallel as Red Hordes were trapped in Seoul area newspaper headlines proclaimed just a year ago today ... That was when meat controls were to curb black market operations ... And the railroads were shut down because some of the railroaders were home, "sick" ... Flu and colds cut the daily average attendance of local schools; 150 Anahi students were absent, while 257 elementary pupils and four instructors were out ... Anaheim booster groups moved to bring war industries to this area ... And just a year ago, the state appropriated $50,000 so that the $5,536,000 carbon canyon dam project might be started within a year ... The Anaheim elementary school board — John Mary, Herb Stabbert and Tom Henry — accepted the Jefferson school after making an inspection trip through the new structure ... Austin Griffith, Jr. son of Miller Traces Red Conspiracy In Forum Talk Jack Miller, of the Associated Farmers of California and a militant foe of communism in Orange county and elsewhere, last night addressed an audience in the "Focus on Christian Living" Forum series held at the St. Boniface hall. Mr. Miller related the history of communism, explained the "criminal conspiracy" with which communism degrades peoples and nations, and told his hearers what they can do to oppose communism. The communist party in the United States, Mr. Miller pointed out, was born as an offshoot of the socialist party in 1919. The depression of the 1930s brought the party to a peak strength of about 100,000 members, with perhaps 1,000,000 sympathizers and "fellow travelers." In 1939, the Hitler-Stalin pact sent through the party a shock of disillusionment and the membership declined. In 1944—at the high point of the U.S.-Russian wartime partnership—Earl Browder, then executive secretary, disbanded the party and formed the communist political association. GOOD NEWS—It was good news to Anaheimers when they learned that the Hollywood Stars would train in spacious La Palma Park this year. Connie Mack whose Philadelphia Athletics trained at La Palma Park stated in his baseball memoirs that Anaheim was “the finest training camp” in his experience. Under the supervision of Vic Ready, capable park superintendent, La Palma Park has been the training site for the Athletics, Seattle Rainiers, Los Angeles Angels and the Sacramento Solons. Fred Haney will open camp for pitchers and catchers on the 23rd and is at present revising the Hollywood spring training game schedule. There is quite an interesting story behind the story of the Hollywood “switch” to Anaheim from San Fernando. We’ll get Vie to tell it one of these fine days. TRAINING — We’ve told you that Harold (Skeets) Gregr, Anaheim elementary school board — John Mary, Herb Stabbert and Tom Henry — accepted the Jefferson school after making an inspection trip through the new structure ... Eddie Lee Weatherers, 19, of Buena Park, went on trial for borrowing Bill Rainbolt’s plane for a joyride ... Both Del Crandall and Bobby Ross signed major league contracts ... Anaheim Golf Ass’n set Feb. 8 as its official field day ... Charles Martig died‘at the home of his brother William Mastig ... Those were the news stories you read a year ago. Remembers? In 1939, the Hitler-Stalin pact sent through the party a shock of disillusionment and the membership declined. In 1944—at the high point of the U.S.-Russian wartime partnership—Earl Browder, then executive secretary, disbanded the party and formed the communist political association. The party line was ‘collaboration with capitalism.” The class war was played down. A year later—in 1945, just before Germany’s capitulation—the line shifted abruptly. The party was reconstituted; the “class war” doctrine was reaffirmed. Mr. Browder was deposed and eventually dropped from the party. Today, the communist party claims 70,000 members; non-communist observers say the total is smaller. The party is strictly disciplined. Members are required to attend meetings, to pay dues, to turn out for “demonstrations.” They are tightly organized. At the bottom are clubs, covering local communities or shops. Above these are city, county and state organizations. At the top is the national board—the “American politic-buro,” with headquarters in New York City. In his discussion of the communist party in America, Mr. Miller described the trial of the 11 leaders of the communist party who were convicted in Judge Medina’s court in New York City. The 11 (another—William Z. Foster, national chairman—was too ill to face trial), were convicted of criminal conspiracy against the United States government. Mr. Miller alluded to the trial to show a comparison with the unlawful and often cruel inhuman means which characterize the steps taken by Joseph Stalin and his fellow criminal conspirators in seizing and holding power in Russia. Mr. Miller advised his audience to be on the alert for any subversive activity. He said that letters to Senators and Representatives in Washington asking them moved to bring war industries to this area... And just a year ago, the state appropriated $60,000 so that the $5,536,000 carbon eanyon dam project might be started within a year... Remembers? pitchers and catchers on the 23rd and is at present revising the Hollywood spring training game schedule. There is quite an interesting story behind the story of the Hollywood "switch" to Anaheim from San Fernando. We'll get Vie to tell it one of these fine days. TRAINING — We've told you that Harold (Skeets) Gregr. Anaheim's contribution to baseball, is working out with Howard Henning, a member of the Kwikset team who has baseball aspirations. This duo is to be joined by Bobby Ega who would have pitched for the Washington Senators had the draft board not taken up its priority on his services, and Frank (Kiko) Munoz, a UCLA student, who figures on playing ball this summer. Incidentally, Bobby Adams, an Anahemer with the Cincinnati Reds, probably will get his first big break since signing with the club seven years ago. The utility infielder will get a crack at a regular berth this year. HALL OF FAME — Douglas Preston Wheeler, former manager of the Buena Park Lynx and who was quite a baseball player in his day, told J. F. Lemon that the fans at Witchita, Kansas, where Johnny Wagoner's brother-in-law—Arky Vaughan—broke into organized baseball, still remember the exploits of the Fullerton youngster. They're booming him for a berth in the national pastime's hall of fame. And Arky deserves the honor. He was a ball player. Had he had a partical of the color that characterized the Great Diz Dean, every schoolboy would be talking of his exploits. Baseball was a business with to show a comparison with the unlawful and often cruelly inhuman means which characterize the steps taken by Joseph Stalin and his fellow criminal conspirators in seizing and holding power in Russia. Mr. Miller advised his audience to be on the alert for any subversive activity. He said that letters to Senators and Representatives in Washington asking them to be tough on communists would not go unheeded. A 5000-square-mile of frozen sand has been discovered on the Arctic Ocean coast of Alaska. Arky. He played, hard, clean baseball on the diamond, but he wasn't much on the public relations end of the sport. BOOSTERS—It was men like Steve Luther, Ray Orton, Sr., John Nash, Art Sullivan, Charles McGaughy and Francis Lemon who must be given a boost for their work with Orange county's baseball talent. These men loved the game, and they provided the opportunities for youngsters to break into organized baseball after serving their apprenticeship on fast semi-pro organizations. It cost them money to run ball teams. These men, and fellows like Peter Lohr, bought balls and bats, furnished transportation for players. They might not have been able to afford it at the time, but the important thing is that they did it. No wonder Anaheim and Orange county youth got the "breaks." NITECAPSULE — In spring a young man's fancy may turn ever so lightly to thought of love. A lot of them live to regret it. Bob's Hobby Shop Models - Crafts - Ceramics 1104 W.
