For Results and Quick Anaheim Gagetteer by JOHN G. NEUBAUER ... Flee from the wrath to come. Matt. 3:7. PASTIMES—President Harry S Truman asked the Congress for prompt approval of a record $10-billion tax hike to assure his pay-as-you-go program ... That was a year ago when a big US tank force ripped through red lines ... And Las Vegas was ready for the big atomic blast ... Paul Gould was killed while changing a tire on the side of 101 west of Ellay ... Sgt. Ruse Campbell of the sheriff's office noted an increase in juvenile delinquency in his annual report ... LeRoy Hester, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orva Hester and a UG architect major, married Miss June Howard of Pasadena ... Mrs. Berline Hoffman, a 23-year-old expectant Buena Park mother, tried to kill herself and two boys by eating ant paste ... Gen. Daniel H. Huddleston stated that some 600 or 700 Guardsmen would see service in Korea ... Tex Middleton and Horton Sherwood defeated Bill Grafton and Theron Wilson in a week-end tennis match, 6-2. Lagunan's Murder Trial Date Set Trial of Gerald Harvey Bonebrake, 21, charged with the murder of Richard Shaw, 19, last Dec. 23, in Bonebrake's apartment at Laguna Beach, was set in Superior court at Santa Ana for March 24. Bonebrake allegedly shot Shaw to death while in a rage aroused when three companions laughed at his saxophone playing following a card game. Police Lt. George Pletts of Laguna Beach, witnessed the shooting through a window of the apartment, then shot and wounded Bonebrake. Lincoln Ave. Plant Okayed by County Application of Lillian Peitzke for a permit to establish an aircraft tooling factory on Lincoln ave., at Hwy 39, west of Anaheim, came before the county supervisors today with favorable recommendation of the county planning commission. The planners last Friday approved the application, but disapproved the application of the Assembly of God church to construct a Sunday school wing as an addition to the church building at Fifth st., and Fullerton ave., in Buena Park. The commission ruled that the expansion would be detrimental to the residential neighborhood because of crowded conditions. It will be an interesting case to follow. Anaheim firms pioneered the citrus bi-products industry. Now, at long last, the Exchange has entered the juice business and through its marketing affiliates it could well drive its competitors out of business and corner the market for its Sunkist label. Because Ted Kuchel, the Gazettepublisher, has dared to criticize the Exchange—or the Kremlin, as he puts it—the powerful citrus combine tried unsuccessfully to throttle his factual column—Colony Quips. CONGRATULATIONS — Gene Steek turned in a remarkable job as general chairman of the 1951-52 Anaheim Community Chest. Anaheim met its quota! In these days of high taxation, inflated prices and uncertainty, that was quite an accomplishment. Most cities fell short of their quotas this year because folks just haven’t got what it takes to be charitable. The 52-cent dollar doesn’t go far. But to all those workers and those who contributed to make Anaheim’s Community Chest drive successful, the Gazette says: “Bravo!” Local Police Halt Fast Moving Marine Speeding and weaving through very heavy traffic at Fourth and Main sts., heart of Santa Ana’s business district, Saturday. Cpl. Tom John Paputsakis, 19, Camp Pendleton Marine, drew pursuit of two police departments and the sheriff’s office, finally being trapped by Anaheim police. Two citations for reckless driving were handed him. Corporal Paputsakis allegedly ignored the demand to stop, roared by Traffic Officer Dudley G. Gourley of Santa Ana after the Marine had raced across the busy intersection, scattering pedestrians and cars. Gourley sent out a broadcast for his arrest. A sheriff’s car picked up the flying Marine on Highway 101 north of Santa Ana but lost him at the junction with Manchester blvd., south of Anaheim. Soon afterward, Anaheim police apprehended Paputzakis at Los Angeles and Santa Ana sts., and cited him for reckless driving. Officer Gourley arrived shortly and handed the Marine another citation for the same offense. He was then turned over to the Shore Patrol in Santa Ana. Anaheim met its quota! In these days of high taxation, inflated prices and uncertainty, that was quite an accomplishment. But to all those workers and those who contributed to make Anaheim’s Community Chest drive successful, the Gazetteer says: “Bravo! Well done!” OPEN HOUSE—Quite a few Anaheimers made the trip out to Placentia to take a look at the new $8.5-million Union Oil Research Center. BEES TAYLOR can be proud of the layout, but GEORGE BRUMLEY, who works in the Oil-linda hills could tell you that the neon sign on the building is a poor advertisement for the product, because it seldom works right. YAK-YAK—Kenny Foster has a new pastime—recharging weak batteries... Calvin Varner, whose homesickness cut short a promising football career at UC a decade or so ago, is now working in a Santa Fe Springs refinery... Fred Livingston, who used to punch a clock for the Brogdex people here in Anaheim, is now with Vern Wilkinson’s drug stores. Incidentally, the Fullerton city councilman is so busy with his rapidly expanding pill-rolling enterprises that he won’t seek another term. He operates stores in Fullerton, Brea, Buena Park and South Whittier—Santa Fe Springs. Ivyou, sir... George Allec was reminded of those war-time shortage lines by the queue that formed at the Bank of America license tab window last Saturday. A lot of folks put and handed the Marine another citation for the same offense. He was then turned over to the Shore Patrol in Santa Ana. Blanche Harris Funeral Today Mrs. Blanche Nevis Harris died at her home, 721 N. Lemon, Wednesday at the age of 65 years after lying in Anaheim for over 44 years. She was born in Pennsylvania. Surviving are her husband, Harry L. Harris of Anaheim, two grandchildren, Stephen and Debra; one daughter, Mrs. Maxine Wilson of Whittier and a brother, Charles of Anaheim. Funeral services were held in the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars today at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Howard S. Congdon officiating. Interment was made in the Anaheim cemetery. It off until the bitter end... Earl Moore and Chief Mark Stephenson enjoyed the confab at Palm Springs last week. Through such conferences Anaheimers reap the benefit of the vast fund of experience gathered by all law enforcement agencies... Petroleum geologists, we are told, are “pleased” with the formations found so far in the drilling of Anaheim’s oil well. However, there isn’t the fever-pitch oil-itch that characterized the drilling of the Shell company well just outside the city limits in 1936.
