Ross Dean, doctor of veterinary medicine, announced today. Dr. Dean, who has been a practicing veterinarian for the past eight years, is the man whose variance application to operate a dog and cat hospital on N. Palm st. was kicked around for several months last year by the Anaheim planning commission and city council. The upshot of it all was that Dean found a new location for his hospital and the city determined that a small animal hospital is a light manufacturing use of land. A 1940 graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute's veterinary school, Dr. Dean worked for two years with the St. Louis Health department, then entered private practice at Nashville, Ill., for eight years. During the past year, he has been working with some of the leading veterinary hospitals in California. According to Dr. Dean, the new Anaheim Dog and Cat hospital will offer the latest facilities of modern veterinary practice. Hunt Foods Man To Head Fullerton Red Cross Drive Duane Winters, personnel manager in the Fullerton plant of Hunt Foods, Inc., has been named General Fund Chairman for the 1952 Northern Orange county Red Cross drive, Mrs. R. A. Marsden, chapter chairman, announced today. In this position it will be his responsibility to direct the fund campaign in Fullerton and to coordinate the local drive with similar drives being conducted in the branch cities, Brea, Buena Park, La Habra, Placentia and Yorba Linda. Leaders in water affairs of Orange county visited water spreading grounds and control works of Riverside and San Bernardino counties Wednesday, under escort of water leaders there, to view conditions as regulated by the Irvine court judgment of 1933. They found that water organizations in the upper Santa Ana basin have large and effective spreading grounds, and wells that cut off much of the underground flow traveling toward Orange county. This feature is not covered by the Irvine judgment, which applies only to spreading of surface water. They were informed in a lunch-on talk by Attorney James L. King, prominent San Bernardino water lawyer, that a suit recently filed by the Orange County Water district to halt increase in local water pumping by the cities of San Bernardino Riverside, Colton and Redlands, had not aroused antagonism there. And it had, he said, achieved its purpose of prodding those cities and surrounding territory into a move to join the Metropolitan Water district and import Colorado river water. A committee has been organized to work on this proposal, and an engineering study has been ordered. King reported. King, who is counsel for the San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation district and San Bernardino city water department, addressed the Orange county group at the California hotel, San Bernardino, where a noon stop was made. He said that sentiment in San Bernardino county is generally favorable to MWD annexation, but there is some opposition in Riverside and Corona. Since both counties get their water from San Bernardino basin, they should join MWD together, but present state law prevents annexations from crossing county lines, he said. However, an amendment is being prepared and probably will be draining the Mt. Baldy area. Aboard the bus that carried Orange county party, sponsored the Orange County Water district were: President Jack Gill, Gar Grove; Secretary W. D. Mil vice-president E. T. Watson, live, and Directors J. J. Dennil press, Mervin Wagner, Placeen and Stephen Griset, Greenwich of the water district; President Glenn Allen, Orange, and Directors Gerald Price, Midway U Richard Rogers, Seal Beach, W. B. In this position it will be his responsibility to direct the fund campaign in Fullerton and to coordinate the local drive with similar drives being conducted in the branch cities, Brea, Buena Park, La Habra, Placentia and Yorba Linda. In accepting the appointment Winters announced that the Fullerton chapter would wage a one-week campaign beginning March 4 and ending March 10. "We believe, he stated, that our goal of $20,789.00 can be achieved in that period provided the coverage of residential and industrial areas is complete. Our committees, I am sure, will guarantee this coverage." Winters has been associated with the local food processing concern since 1946. He is a member of the board of directors of the Fullerton Kiwanis club and has been active in the city's Adult Recreation program. WASHINGTON (T)—A revenue official says the new federal gambling tax has virtually halted illegal gambling in the United States but he added: "I don't know how long the honeymoon will last." Climate of the Yukon Territory is marked by great variations in temperatures from year to year. In some years the coldest month has averaged from 40 to 50 below zero, and in other years the average temperature has been above zero. Bernardino county is generally favorable to MWD annexation, but there is some opposition in Riverside and Corona. Since both counties get their water from San Bernardino basin, they should join MWD together, but present state law prevents annexations from crossing county lines, he said. However, an amendment is being prepared and probably will be presented at the coming special session of the legislature. Since it has MWD approval, it probably will be enacted, King predicted. Both San Bernardino and Riverside have lost a number of new industries because they could not guarantee water supply, said King. The Orange county group was joined at Riverside by M. B. Peterson, president of the Riverside Water Co., and at Redlands by J. J. Prendergast, president, and Herace Hinckley, engineer for the Bear Valley Mutual Water Co. They toured the Mill creek spreading grounds and Santa Ana river spreading grounds, as far up as the Bailey weir (designed by Engineer Paul Bailey of Orange county in 1930) which was built jointly by the three counties. The weir provides a check on the diversion of water by the Bear Valley company. At San Bernardino they were joined by E. F. Dibble, engineer for the San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation district, and Walker Burgess, engineer for the Fontana Union Water Co. Burgess escorted the group over the Cajon area and Lytle creek spreading grounds during the afternoon. Lytle creek is one of the largest sources of Santa Ana river water, NEW STORE OPENS—Opening of Dunham's Fine Footwear at 215 W. Center St., Anaheim, took place today.
