HORIZONTAL LOUVRES make a handsome fence at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arval Morris, 1400 Santa Ana St. The angle of the louvres has been adjusted to give privacy without cutting off light or air. Top grade, kiln-dried lumber was used in its construction to discourage warping, twisting and sagging. Because of its decided architectural quality, this fence is matched to the house and is an integral part of the landscape scheme.
BASKET WEAVE FENCING which surrounds the Bob Quast home at 400 Parkway Dr. creates an interesting design of lights and shadows, looks complicated but is really simple to construct. Since the strips may be made of almost any type of wood, the Quasts sorted through materials at a local lumber company and selected redwood strips which varied between one-half and one inch in thickness. The cost of the finished four and a half foot fence was surprisingly low. Nails were used only at the posts, so when the family dog chewed through one of the stringers, they found it an easy job to weave another board in its place.

Pickets, Boards, Cement Or Wire -- Fences Necessary For Modern-Day Living
By JOAN S. WHITE
There is more to building a fence than meets the eye. There must be. Why else does the dream house, so romantically pictured in the imagination as neatly surrounded by white pickets so often end up in reality behind a barrier of solid boards?
In this day and age of small building lots and close proximity to the family next door, privacy is the first function of fencing in many areas. You have only to glance from your picture window into that of your neighbor's to decide that something more drastic than pickets is called for.
A solid board fence does afford maximum screening but it also shuts off cooling breezes. Vertical louvres, spaced slats, and boards with spaces between offer a happy medium. The lattice, the picket and the post-and-rail type fencing obviously give the least privacy but according to some ordinances are all that can be used in certain locations.
There are other considerations as well. A good fence is a means of keeping your animals and children in and those of others—out. Although there has yet to be a legal fence devised which will keep out a determined 12-year-old boy, some fences are obviously better than others for the purposes of security. The metal chain link fence offers the best protection but has protect your outdoor patio from the elements. Annoying wind can be controlled with clear glass panels or various types of baffles. Proper placement of these calls for a careful study of wind currents which are often deflected in an unexpected way by the position of house or garage.
If it is a screen for an unsightly view that you need most, a quick growing hedge may be the answer. Or a wire fence to be used as a support for vines.
Fencing Costs
Since a fence is part of home landscaping and often a part of the architectural scheme as well, it cannot be considered as a thing apart but rather in relation to the home as a whole and its function as part of that home. Once the functions of the fence and its style have been decided upon, cost is usually the deciding factor in the choice among the many designs and materials available.
The most expensive types of fencing from the standpoint of initial cost can be roughly typed as concrete, glass windscreen, kiln dry louvres, woven sapling, solid board and corrugated asbestos.
Placed in the moderate price range by most builders are the grapestake, picket, board and board and chain link. The least expensive are wire mesh, post-and-rail and post-and-board.

The Junior play cast has been practicing hard every night with exception of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
For two hours every night these 24 Juniors work like busy bees getting the play in shape for Feb. 29, when they will present it.
From the looks of sneak previews, the play looks a success.
Two hundred and thirteen Juniors were not very cheerful this week, for the annual Junior English test was held, they were expected to write a 200 word composition.

The Riding club of AUHS elected committees to make a constitution for the club and to change its name.
This group left at 3 today to ride at Irvine Park Stables, where they not only enjoy a 4½ mile ride, but they learn the fundamentals of riding a horse, and how to take care of one.
Your garden fence will be only as good as the materials that go into it and the care you give it. Actually, labor contributes the largest amount to the initial cost of a fence, so little is gained by scrimping on materials.
If built of good materials that are weather and decay resistant, you can expect your fence to give satisfactory service for all of 20 years. Poor quality materials can subtract 10 to 15 years from that figure.
Most fences require some maintenance. Spring is usually considered the best time of the year to check them over. Heavy rains and high winds may start decay, push posts out of line and loosen nails. A board fence requires painting as often as a frame house—every three to five years.
Question Due to Rise in Capitol
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senators planned to ask Secretary of the Treasury Snyder today if there would be any politics in selection of top officials in the proposed new Internal Revenue Service.
Senator Mundt (R-SD) told a reporter this question is certain to come up when Snyder appears before the expenditures committee in support of President Truman's Internal Revenue reorganization plan.
The fate of the plan—Mr. Truman's first legislative proposal this session directed at a government cleanup—now rests entirely with the Senate. The house approved it by a big vote yesterday.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Slaughterers across the nation have agreed to foot the bill so 280 government meat inspectors won't be fired because of a lack of federal funds.

Christian Science
The healing, comforting value
of living in obedience to the laws
of divine Love will be pointed out
in the Bible Lesson to be read in
Christian Science churches Sunday.
The Lesson-Sermon, composed
of selections from the Holy Bible
(King James Version) and the
Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy,
is entitled "Love."
The Golden Text from I John
(4:18) declares: "We have known
and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him."
Luke's Gospel records, "There was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity 18 years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity . . . And immediately she was made straight, and glorified God" (13:11-13).
In "Science and Health* with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddie declares: "The poor suffering heart needs its rightful nutriment, such as peace, patience in tribulation, and a priceless sense of the dear Father's loving-kindness." "Love is the liberator." (pp. 365, 225).
Bethel Baptist
Nearly everyone enjoys receiving gifts, and some even enjoy giving gifts: but what about our gifts to God? Rev. Berthold Jacksteit will attempt to throw light on this subject Sunday morning when he will be speaking on—"Gifts Exceptable to God." Sunday evening pastor Jacksteit will continue with the study in Paul's Epistle to the Romans with his message, "The Debt We Owe One Another," taken from the 13th chapter of Romans.
Forty-five of the young people of Bethel Baptist church will spend this weekend in the mountains at "Thousand Pines Snow Camp." They will be uniting with the young people of the First Baptist church of Long Beach, and the First Baptist church of Bellflower in this Thousand Pines snow camp. They will be enjoying christian fellowship and study classes besides the recreation in the snow. It is hoped that hereafter this will be an annual winter outing for the young people of the church.

White Temple Methodist
"Rolling Stones," a feature motion picture dealing with the new problem of the industrial migrant in American life, will be shown at the regular 7 o'clock Sunday night service at White Temple Methodist church, introducing a new series of Sunday evening programs throughout the month of February on different aspects of the problem of Christian citizenship responsibilities.
The film was produced by Family Films, Inc., and tells the story of a family that moves from job to job and city to city without putting down any roots to stabilize the children, until an old man realizes what is happening to his transient neighbors and begins to do something about it. "Since Anaheim is becoming industrialized so rapidly," states Rev. Frank Butterworth, "it is most important that we realize this problem and prevent our town from becoming flooded with these uprooted Americans."
At the 10:50 a.m. morning service, Chuck Wiggins, Minister of Youth, will preach on "The Power of Calmness."
