Oilers Arrive For Scanning Sports
By STEAN PINER
Anaheim Coliseum captains enter the Beverly Hills tourney Friday afternoon at 2 against Rekindle of the Big League. Rekindle has a long win-loss record to date of 3-1 which puts them in second spot behind leader, Inglewood.
The journey is a single elimination affair, but if the local captains should get past the Rekindle-Sun Hawaii they would run into the tournament favorite who is undecided this year—Campton.
Campton won the Beverly Hills tourney last year as well as the CIF championship and they seem headed to another tourney and CIF title.
Bob Hopkins, who set a Smart league starting mark several years ago for the Santa Ana Saints, is carrying on in the same winning manner for the Panadena Naugatone college cap team.
Just last night he scored 20 points to set a school record as well as a court record. The game was played in San Luis Obispo gym with the Panadena team pawning over Cal Poly 63-54. The 51 points was also a school record, as well as a court record.
Several of Coach Alex Omuller's top-match captains, who are members of the Fallerton Hornet team that is leading the Eastern Conference hop race, are questioned in Anaheim for the Recreation department under the direction of Dan Derrz.
At Jefferson is Walter "Pinky" Thompson; Ben Franklin, Jerry Philip; both first stringers who came to the Hornet's next from Michigan where they were both outstanding players.

Ever go "over the side"?
It won't easy with the roll of the transport and the clammy way of your heavy full field pack. And, at the foot of the landing set, the risky drop into the cold, crowded landing craft bobbing in the choppy sea.
Then, finally there's the tense, terrible run toward an angry beach and a destiny you cannot even guess.
It's all very serious and dangerous and hard. Yet thousands of American youngsters have done it—and are ready to do it again, if need be, in defense of our country and you.

Anaheim Colonists to Host Unbeaten Huntington Beach Tonight in High School Gym
Huntington Beach, who is undefeated in basketball this season, seems downed to have that perfect record marred what with them satered in the rough and tough Beverly Hills tournament which starts Friday afternoon at 12:30, but their streak of 15 straight victories could very well end before the Ollers ever reach Beverly Hills.
Anaheim's Colonists got a crack at the tall Offens tonight in the Anaheim high school gym, starting at 4, and they could very well pull the speed of the loop by halting the high-flying Giants from Huntington Beach.
The two teams have met once in the first round of the San Antonio League competition, and the Ollers won that one on their own court, 61-38, but the Colonists were without their top point maker, Bill Ames. Ames played in the game, but in a very weak state. He did attempt seven shots at the basket and one from the free throw line, but couldn't connect on any of them.
But he is back in the old rat race and ready and eager to meet the Ollers in his own backyard and give a helping hand to the defender of the not-so-dangerous Ollers.
In the first game between the Anaheim Colonists and Huntington Beach, league victory of the year and knock Anaheim out of their third place tie with Fullerton.
Anaheim had a very poor three round league games as well as during the season. Orange had a better percentage than the Colonists as did the Newport Harbor Sailors. Fullerton Indiana and the Santa Ana Saints in the first round.
Looking at the point records of Ira Webber and Johnny Steinbrenn during the league race, one might tend to think that tonight is the night for one or both of them to go on a scoring spree, that is, if past records have anything to do with it.
In the first loop game with Santa Ana, Webber did right well as he guarded 12 points while Steinborn could only hit for seven. In the next game, Huntington Beach put the show in that rite to improve. So do others which wili make Counterpoint clippings.

Counterpoint, horse of the year in 1951 and winner of the $25,600 San Fernando Handicap Jan. 19 in his 1962 debut, appears to be coming up to a smashing race. He did some looting in the early part of his last winning race. But he will be adding several more points for this mile and one-fourth test, and even with a small field. Counterpoint is going to have his work cut out.

Bee Cagers in Crucial Game Tonight With Huntington In Anaheim Gym at 6:45
If Anaheim expects to repeat as Sunset league Bee basketball champion they will have to win the game tonight in the local high school gym against Huntington Beach, the team they are tied with in the league race with identical loop win-loss records—5-1.
In the first round of competition Anaheim met and defeated the taller Oilers on the hour's final 65-32 in very convincing manner, but with Anaheim falling to the Saints from Santa Ana in the first round and having to go all out to win against just last week, the Oilers-Colonists outcome leaves one in doubt.
In the first game both Huntington and Anaheim were tied up at the end of the first quarter, 6-6, but with George Bishop, Fred Frank and Paul Salazar each scoring four points in the second period, the locals jumped out a 22-10 half time lead.
Anaheim attempted 81 shots from the court and connected on only 19 of them for a field goal percentage mark of 31.1 which is slightly below par, which is 33.3 On the other hand, Huntington Beach attempted a mere 39 shots the entire game and could only

The Oilers are averaging 48.6 points a game while limiting their foe to an average of 32.3 points. Anaheim scored the highest number of points in one game—70 against Newport Harbor while the

The other certain starters are Black Douglas, Interpretation, Lien and To Market.
Interpretation was cut out to be a great race horse, but bad underpinning has set him back from time to time. At his best he is really a threat. He ran a mile at Hollywood last summer in 1:25 2/5. He won four of six races last year and finished second in the other two.
To Market has been regarded as a spinner. But he has been so sharp here W. J. Hirsch believes he can carry his speed for all or part of the pot. To Market run down Bryan G in the stretch in winning the San Carlos Handicap at seven furlongs.
Action from Athletic N. Y. About Bouts

Anaheim attempted 81 shots from the court and connected on only 19 of them for a field goal percentage mark of 31.1 which is slightly below par, which is 33.3 On the other hand, Huntington Beach attempted a mere 39 shots the entire game and could only make 18 which gave them a very low mark of 25.6 on their field goal attempts.
On free throws attempted by Anaheim they made only seven out of the 19 attempted while Huntington Beach hit for 12 of 24 for a near percentage mark of 30.0 while the Anaheim mark was a lowly 26.8.
Field goal percentage marks by quarters for Anaheim were 18.8, 26.8, 33.5 and 30.8 while the Oilers had marks of 10.0, 12.5, 63.6 and 10.0.

MENLO PARK, Calif. UP—Tyrus Raymond Cobb, fiery old time star of the diamond, stepped up to the plate today to clout a verbal home run in favor of Negroes in baseball.

The Oilers are averaging 48.6 points a game while limiting their foe to an average of 32.3 points. Anaheim scored the highest number of points in one game—70 against Newport Harbor while the Oilers held their opposition to the lowest number with 19 which was scored by Fullerton.
Anaheim's offensive attack is really not situated in one department, but rather from five and possibly six sections of the Anaheim bench. Leading the offensive attack are Frank Navarro, Fred Frank, George Bishop, Bob Stewart and Paul Salazar with Val Weithorn coming into his own of late.
Salazar tops the scorers with 56 points for an average in loop games of 9.3. Stewart has 46 points and a 7.6 average; Bishop has 45 points for a 7.5 average; Navarro, 39 with a 6.5 average and Frank 38 points and a 6.3 average. Weithorn playing in only four games has scored 21 points for an average of 5.2.
Anaheim, as a team, has attempted 375 shots at the basket, making 116 for a percentage mark of 30.9 while their opposition have attempted 275, making 75 for a below par mark of 27.3.
But one can and probably will throw all the statistics out when these two teams go into battle tonight in the Anaheim gym in their 6:45 feature.
For the winner will be an open door to the league title while the loser can only hope for the runner-up spot. Game time—6:45 tonight.

Bronx Buil Drops Decision in Boston
BOSTON — Knockout beatings by champion Sugar Ray Robinson and Irish Bob Murphy appear to have taken a high toll on Lake La Motta, boxing's famed Bull of the Bronx.
After a five-months' layoff, that six-middleweight titlist returned to the ring wrestl last night and stopped a 10-round divided decision to Norman Hayes. Boston's 3-year-old Negro battler who was championship ambitions.
Jake, 30, appeared fat and heavy-footed at 169% pounds. He unchested with all his oldtime reckless abandon but, against Hayes, who proved extremely easy to hit, Lake's blow seemed to lack angel. Lake Motta, a 1-2 favorite with 6% pounds pull, lumbered after layes throughout.
Hayes, recent conqueror of Franor's Robert Villemain, spent two minutes of each of the first nine rounds counter-attacking and the third slugging toe-to-toe.
