Sen. Hickenlooper To Speak Here For the first time since he drew capacity crowds in the Los Angeles Philharmonic auditorium, in 1940, Senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper of Iowa, will visit Southern California to speak. Now serving his second term in the United States Senate, the former Iowa governor will report on his recent tour of Europe. Hickenlooper serves on the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, and has long been interested in military affairs. He will appear in Orange county at a luncheon sponsored by the Orange County Federation of Republican Women's Clubs, at the Balboa Bay club on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 12 noon. Kuchel, state controller, today announced to California counties their portion of the Highway Users Tax Fund. Kuchel said Orange county will receive $267,415.76 as its portion of the fund. B. Carson of the Business Administration department of the University of California at Los Angeles, as speaker. Professor Carson gave a lengthy educational talk on the "Tax Aspects of Organizing a Partnership or a Corporation," in which he explained the various tax advantages and disadvantages of each form of business endeavor. The society has been conducting these educational meetings for the accountants since last fall as a part of the program of bringing to its members the latest and most authentic information regarding today's complex tax problems. The meeting was under the chairmanship of S. H. Long and the speaker was introduced by Larry Guben of Santa Ana. The meeting was held in Swanson's Monterey Cafe. The United States' average yield of lint cotton per acre for 1951 is estimated at 274.5 pounds. Edward F. Glenn Is Navy Graduate Graduated from the Naval Machinist's Mate School, Service School Command, U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill., on Jan. 25, was Edward F. Glenn, machinist's mate fireman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard F. Glenn of 221 E. Broadway st., Anaheim, Calif. Glenn, who entered the Naval service in June, 1951, received his recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego. Anaheim Future Farmers Take Second in Speaking Contest Santa Ana college played host to the Future Farmers of the Orange county high schools last week when the annual cooperative Marketing Contest and the Future Farmers Speaking Contest was held on the local campus. Paul Borchard, president of the Santa Ana Young Farmers, presided over the meet and guests included Dr. Daniel C. McNaughton, director of Santa Ana college, Linton Simmons, county superintendent of schools, and Bob Denbigh, state supervisor of vocational agricultural education. Art Christy, representing Diamond Walnuts, and Art Palm, representing Sunkist, officiated at the Cooperative Marketing Contest, and the awards were presented at the conclusion of the dinner held in the college cafeteria. Student president Paul Borchard announced the winners of the contest which included the Future Farmers winning first place, Garden Grove, second place, and Anaheim, third place. The public speaking contest for the Future Farmers of Orange county was conducted by master of ceremonies Miles Womp, secretary of the Santa Ana group. Judges for this contest included C. L. Ford, drama and speech instructor at Santa Ana college, Jay Tucker, poultry instructor at the college evening division, and Art Palm from Sunkist. Linton Simmons, county superintendent of schools, acted as timekeeper. First place winner of the contest was Eugene Paulus from Orange, whose topic was "Benefits of Cooperatives to Farmers and the Attack These Organizations Are Faced With." Lewis Abbott, from Newport Harbor high school, was second place winner; his speech being on "Keeping the Land in a Productive and Profitable State." Third place winner was Don Beal from the Garden Grove chapter whose talk was on "The Honeybee and Agriculture." Other contestants were Bob La Von of Fullerton and Larry Fishback of Anaheim. Seventy-five people from Orange county attended the annual affair at Santa Ana college.
