Government, Industry Finally Start Removing Bottleneck in Production
WASHINGTON (AP)—After more than five years of talk and argument, the United States government and industry are finally started toward breaking an important bottleneck in high speed production of warplanes—and catching up with a Russian technological lead.
The Air Force said today orders for 18 huge forging presses are under contract. These massive tools can turn out better parts for jet bombers and fighters far faster and at lower manpower and dollar cost than present processes.
But it will be two years or more before the new machines can be delivered to add to the handful of forging presses now in operation in the United States.
The forging presses appear to be part of bottlenecks in defense production criticized in a new report by a Senate-House mobilization "watchdog" committee. The committee blamed the Pentagon and various defense agencies for shortsightedness contributing to the tool shortage.
In answer to a reporter's questions about the committee's criticism, a Defense department spokesman said the department recognized machine tool shortages existed in the early stages of the production build-up.
But, he added, the point has been reached "where the bulk of the machine tools required has been ordered and either is delivered or scheduled to be delivered within the reasonably near future." The reasonably near future was not specified in terms of months or years.
Tools not yet ordered, are chiefly those which still are undergoing design changes or development and on which the military services and industry are still making studies.
A check with the Air Force and with industry shows that the major problem continues to be tools for making jet engines. These tools are needed, among other things, for boring through metals of hitherto unknown hardness needed in the high-temperature jets and for machining down to watch-like precision the turbine buckets and other moving parts of the engines.
Tools and techniques used in making conventional piston engines are useless in jet manufacture.
Russian Puzzles U.S. But Not Vogeler
VIENNA, Austria (AP) — U.S. diplomats and intelligence officers tried to find out today whether Nikita Kabilakov is really the "good Russian, Robert Vogeler claims he is or a crafty spy in production build-up."

Russian Puzzles U.S. But Not Vogeler
VIENNA, Austria (UP) — U.S. diplomats and intelligence officers tried to find out today whether Nikita Kabiakov is really the "good Russian, Robert Vogeler claims he is or a crafty spy in refugee's clothing.
Vogeler said Kabiakov tried without success to help him escape from the Hungarian prison where the American business man was jailed 17 months as a "spy." Vogeler sponsored migration to the United States for the 30-year-old Kabiakov, his wife and two sons.
But Walter J. Donnelly, U.S. Ambassador to Austria, cancelled their visas yesterday and ordered destruction of pictures showing Donnelly shaking hands with Kabiakov.
Wives of the Anaheim Y's Men met Wednesday to plan the organization of Y's Menettes club in Anaheim and selected as temporary chairman, Mrs. Richard Harris, who will serve in this capacity during the organizational period. A nominating committee will be appointed and officers elected at a later date.
A committee including Mrs. Robert Brookhurst, Mrs. Orla Fast, Mrs. Richard Harris and Mrs. Thomas Beale was selected to investigate procedure of organization, charter and other details relative to forming the club.
Attending were Mrs. Harold Schneider, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Fast, Mrs. Virgil Fast, Mrs. Beale, Mrs. Robert Quast, Mrs. J. Ross Walker, Jr., and Nan Moore.

Iwata Brothers Purchase Land
The 20 acres of land on the NW corner of Lincoln and Cerritos ave., that have been staked out by lot by the past two days, by a surveyor, have caused much speculation by the nearby residents.
Property has been purchased by the three Iwata brothers, Tatsumi, Tad and Tosh, of 15362 E. Rosecrans, Whittier. They are going to raise flowers for the Los Angeles wholesale market. They are also the owners of the Blue Hill gardens, 30 acres in East Whittier.
The Iwata boys graduated from Excelsior high school and studied business at Fullerton junior college and are well known in the flower business.
NEW YORK (UP)—The New York Times said today the administration has accepted what President Truman once called "the terrible Capehart Amendment" in its own version of a defense production act to replace legislation which expires June 30.
