MELLEN RALPH ROULAND DON YOUNG OBLONG VIEWS FROM AN EGG-SHAPED HEAD BY WALDO HUNTER IT IS BECOMING increasingly obvious that this is a presidential election year. I can tell it by the way my neighbor leans across the back yard fence, directs a well-aimed globule of spittle at my best raspberry bush, pulls his mouth down at the corners into the sneer of a whip-lashed panther and snarls: "Well, who do YOU like for president?" But I have resolutely shied clear of arguing politics with this man. I value his friendship too much to lose the right to his lawn-mower all because of a pointless political hassle. I know for a fact, too, that he is a Republican. Just the other evening he was seen beating his dog with a length of log chain. But politics bears down upon us, and it has a definite effect upon one and all. We can’t escape it. Whatever happens next November, it is to be hoped that the presidential choice is not an army general. Being a nation of hero-worshipers, we Americans can be excused somewhat for crumpling at the feet of our returned generals and imploring them to go to the White House to set up GHQ. But the great body of the populace has had no connection, either directly or indirectly, with a general army officer, and by virtue of that fact it may be excused for its head-lines inspired tendency toward boot-licking, however imminent to the basic concepts of rugged old Americanism such a practice might be. The military veteran, on the other hand, was able to observe the generals either fairly close at hand or from afar. And even from afar the poor buck in the ranks was never able to escape the fact that his every waking act, his livelihood, his food, clothes, shelter, the cut of his hair, his liberties, even the quality and quantity of his toilet pa IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. The "Star" (Los Angeles) publishes the minutes of a meeting held in Los Angeles twenty-six years ago for the purpose of organizing a volunteer police force. Theo Rimpaur and M. L. Goodman were both present at the meeting and we find their names enrolled among the list of volunteers. Under the caption of "The Anaheim Phoenix," the Los Angeles Herald pays us the following comments: The Anaheim Gazette, whose type and materials were destroyed on the 17th of January, reappeared yesterday in a new dress. The paper in typographical appearance is much improved over its former style, and all things considered, the loss to the proprietors has not been without some gain. The promptitude with which the Gazette arose from its ashes is something for Anaheim to be proud of. The Republican says: The Anaheim Gazette has re-apparated in a bran new dress, an entire new outfit having been purchased and put in order since the fire. This is quick work. Just two weeks ago the Gazette office was burned out and entirely destroyed. One of the proprietors started for San Francisco before the fire was entirely extinguished and today this plucky paper is out in a better shape than ever. The hall over the bank is to be fitted up as an addition to the Planters' Hotel. Several fine suites of rooms with all the modern improvements will be added. A Methodist church is about to be built at Indiana Colony (later Pasadena.) The Presbyterian church will ordain their first minister on Sunday next. There were large fires yesterday in the vicinity of Los Alamitos, and the stage driver also reported the fire in the hills near San Juan Capistrano to be still burning. WASHINGTON — Beneath the surface, the Democratic party is experiencing some of the most important realignments in 30 years. Leaders are dickering, jockeying, trading for position. There is restless ferment in the air not seen among Democrats in a generation. Beneath the ferment, of course, is a race to the throne—as an old monarch totters. It is a race that is beginning to split the party up as never since the Al Smith-McAdoo Catholic-Protestant struggle at the Democratic convention of 1924. And it has developed into a race not only between the monarch and his nobility but between the nobility themselves. Here is how the struggle stacks up to date: Truman's strategy—is based upon the monarch's right to put a princeling of his own choosing on the throne. To that end his strategy is to control each state delegation until he is ready to anoint the head of his successor. That is why ex-Sen. Robert Bulkley, 72 years old and not even remotely a candidate, will run as Ohio's favorite son in an attempt to control the Ohio delegation. That's also why Sen. Hubert Humphrey, though not a candidate, will run as Minnesota's favorite son to control the Minnesota delegation—and so on. Then, just before the convention, these favorite sons will switch their support to the anointed princeling of Truman's choosing. Restless nobility — meanwhile, Hal Boyle By SAUL PETT (For Hal Boyle) NEW YORK (U)—Signs of the times and portents of the future listed in the Manhattan phone book: "We will not campaign for a woman president this year," said a spokesman for the Woman for President and Other Public Offices, Inc. DANSON HOLLYWOOD—"I think that the woman of tomorrow will be doing work like the men, and therefore, for the sake of freedom, they all will wear short skirts like we wear on 'Space Patrol,' Nina (Tonga) Bara told me recently. "Low necklines will be out entirely," she said, "with the emphasis on much higher skirt lines. Women will be less pampered and a great deal healthier. The higher skirt line will not be worn to emphasize sex, but for a practical purpose. After all, climbing in and out of space ships requires a lot of freedom of movement." Nina (Tonga) Bara and Virginia (Carol) Hewitt display this style of dress, every night when "Space Patrol" is viewed over KECA, Channel 7 at 6:45, and also during their new coast-to-coast show on Sunday at 3 o'clock. Nina, who has been with the show since its inception, is really serious when she discussed the future mode of dress for our modernistic women. Even though the space ships are studio props, they still represent what the real thing might be like, and, with all the ladders, and small hatches that must be used while traveling in this fashion, she is convinced that the long semi-tight skirt wouldn't do at all. Starting at Truman's Crown Prince—the man upon whom the president is reported ready to bestow the divine right of succession is Governor Stevenson of Illinois, an able man. When the three northern governors sounded out Adalai, he was aloof, declined to team up, indicated that the monarch had a right to pick his own princeling. The Prince of Connecticut—one of the ablest members of the Senate and a close friend of the president, Sen. Brien McMahon, is doing some presidential stalking on his own, probably with the idea of ending up on the vice-presidential end of the ticket. The Duke of Texas—modest Sam Rayburn is probably the last man to think of himself as a candidate. However, the speaker's friends are doing a lot of thinking and planning for him, the most ardent rooters being Sen. Mike Monroney of Oklahoma and Congressman John McCormack of Massachusetts. The Earl of Kentucky—Vice President Barkley, is lying low, saying little. However, some of his friends, led by Senate Secretary Les Biffle, believe that if the Democratic convention faces a deadlock, the party will turn—despite his age—to the old stalwart, who has made more Jefferson-Jackson day speeches than any other man in history—Alben Barkley. Such is the novel and healthy jockeying for position in a party where for 20 years almost no one dared challenge the divine right of the monarch to succeed himself.
