For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. YESTERYEAR—In the biggest battle of the Korean war, thunder jets shot down four Migs... That was a year ago when that New Guinea volcano erupted 400 deaths... Tom Henry and Robert Harvey of the Anaheim Cold Storage Co., announced the purchase of the Orangethorpe Citrus Ass'n for $40,000. William Schumacher and John Eakin were connected with the packing house. Alfred (Pap) Arnold, the Cypress businessman, was appointed to the Orange County Planning commission... Earl Howard Roberts, the 31-year-old truck driver, charged with felony hit and run, had his preliminary hearing delayed... Bob Jaynes 'and' Hugh Brawley, Safeway store managers, spent an uncomfortable hour, trapped in a bank elevator. Joan Kellogg and Gretchen Glover were selected to attend the State Youth Government convention in Sacramento... Tommy Thomason reported that Anaheim has 39 active Y groups enrolling Father-Son Dinner At Fremont School Set for Feb. 5 Invitations to the Ninth Annual Fremont Father-Son banquet are being sent home with the boys of Fremont this week. The banquet is held each year for the purpose of giving the boys the opportunity to demonstrate their part in the life and activity of the school. Chester M. Fowler, principal urges that fathers plan to bring their sons and enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship with them. There are a number of boys who for various reasons will not be able to have their own fathers bring them. Fathers are invited to avail themselves of the opportunity of helping one of these boys by acting as their father for the evening. The dinner is being served at 6:30 p.m. by a committee of mothers of the Fremont P-TA. The date is Feb. 5, in the Fremont cafeteria. Gilbert Koehler as Master of Ceremonies will be in charge of the program. Please send your reservations, $1.50 for father and son, to school with your boy not later than Feb. 1, Fowler said. Anaheim 3811 Florists PASSING — William Kroeger, 89, pioneer resident of Fullerton, died at his home in Fullerton after a brief illness. He was a son of one of the original Anaheimers, Henry Kroeger, who with 50 other San Franciscoans of German extraction laid the foundation for "the old home town." Although identified as a pioneer of Fullerton where he lived for the past 64 years, he was a pioneer Southern Californian. He saw a miracle of development. He lived in the transition from pastoral California to a highly industrialized country. With his passing, Anaheim and Orange county loses a colorful link with its past. TRAGEDY—To all of us who were fortunate in knowing Barney Stoffel, Jr., the tragic report of his death came as a distinct shock yesterday. It was hard to believe. Buddy Stoffel may have come to an untimely death under the wheels of his heavy truck. But those who knew the Anaheimer, will never forget his plucky spirit, his good-natured friendly smile and pleasant demeanor. "Buddy was a swell guy." Those who were fortunate in knowing him will be saddened by his passing. It will be the knowledge that Anaheim is a better place to live, because he lived here. GREETINGS — Draft notices will be mailed to 84 Orange county men within a day or so. Stanton Lions Host Savanna Civil Defense The Stanton Lions Community clubhouse was the scene of a turkey dinner with flags and flowers in patriotic motif when the Lions hosted the Savanna Civil Defense unit Monday night. Calvin Pebley, president, welcomed the 60 guests and said the Lions were proud to have so many members participating in civil defense work, and particularly proud that in addition to having secretary Royal Marten as coordinator of the Savanna district, William W. Dudley had accepted the assignment to reactivate the Magnolia civil defense group by being their leader. Julian P. Black, program chairman, presented honor guests and speakers; Carbon C. Dubbs, president of the Stanton Chamber of Commerce; Mrs. Julius Buehler and her daughter, Mildred recently returned from Germany. Mildred entertained with a gypsy dance followed by an Hawaiian routine; Mrs. Dan Marshall, who presented her cousin, Mrs. Stephen Kulik, who gave an absorbing talk about her life in Germany before becoming a displaced person and coming here to live two and a half months ago; George A. Graham of Anaheim, secretary-manager of the Orange County Citrus Growers Assn., told of his work with the Mexican nationals who come to California to work in the citrus industry and how different and good their life is compared with those behind the iron curtain Mrs. Kulik spoke about. Adrian L. Wolfert of the council thanked the Lions for sponsoring the Savanna unit and presented his associates, Lewis McBratte For Health, Eat California Fruit! "Buddy was a swell guy." Those who were fortunate in knowing him will be saddened by his passing. It will be the knowledge that Anaheim is a better place to live, because he lived here. GREETINGS — Draft notices will be mailed to 84 Orange county men within a day or so. EXONERATED — Although Dale Gilck, superintendent of Placentia's unified school system, was "completely vindicated" of any guilt into alleged misconduct in office, the $8,400-a-year school official tendered his resignation which was immediately accepted. A special investigation was launched after the official's secretary Mrs. Virginia Allee, mad; certain accusations against him. What these accusations amounted to were never disclosed by the school board. Glick is to receive his salary for the balance of this year, but the remaining two years of his three-year contract will be cancelled. NITECAPSULE—Fashion note. The latest thing in men's clothes—women. Smudges on the wall and ceiling above a radiator are caused by currents of warm air rising from the radiator and carrying along the rust. The smudges would probably occur no matter what kind of fuel is used in the furnace. Of the first-magnitude stars, one of the most distant is Deneb, in the Cygnus the swan galaxy. It is about 650 light years away. Adrian L. Wolfert of the council thanked the Lions for sponsoring the Savanna unit and presented his associates, Lewis McBrat Usual Wave of Economy Demands Roll From Congress in Wake of Budget WASHINGTON (AP)—The usual wave of economy demands rolled out of Congress yesterday in the wake of President Truman's record $85,444,000,000 peacetime spending budget for the fiscal year starting July 1. Cuts of up to 14 billion dollars—enough to prevent a federal deficit next year—were demanded. But there seemed little likelihood that such a goal—or even anything resembling it—would be attained. Actually, Congress is limited in trimming the president’s spending program, since much of the contemplated outlay will come from money already allocated but not yet spent. Congress works only on appropriations, although it can recapture unspent money appropriated in preceding years. In new appropriations for the coming year, the president requested $84,260,000,000, some 10 billion less than he had sought for the present year. Congress cut this year's appropriations a little over four billion. With national security programs taking 76 cents out of every dollar planned for 1953 spending, Congress may concentrate its economy drive on the old-line civilian agencies. Cuts of up to 10 per cent in civilian employment have been demanded by leading Republicans, who claim such a slash would save a billion dollars in the new year. Defense spending also is likely to be curbed, but barring an unexpected turn for the better in world affairs, no deep cuts are probable. Congressional sentiment on military spending in this general election year was disclosed pointedly last week when the House approved an 822 million dollar annual pay raise for Armed Service personnel by a topheavy vote. There was one thing fairly certain about the fiscal outlook: The president isn't likely to get any of the extra tax revenue he wants. His budget message called for $4,600,000,000 more taxes. Congress doesn't take kindly to tax increases in election years.
