Bridgford, Two Other Meat Packers Hit by OPS Actions
The Office of Price Stabilization through U.S. Attorney Walter S. Binns, today filed action in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles against three meat packing firms to enjoin them from paying excessive prices for live cattle purchased for slaughter.
The concerns are the Cudahy Packing Co., the State Packing Co., Inc., both of Los Angeles, and Bridgford Packing Co., of Anaheim.
James E. Harrington, OPS district director of enforcement, announced the action said that the payment of excessive prices for live cattle had the effect of increasing the price of meat to the ultimate consumer.
"A study of slaughter records over a period of months," Harrington declared, "revealed that these companies have been out or compliance with the various ceiling price regulations governing the price permissible to pay not only for cattle but also bulls."
In a statement to the Gazette today Hugh H. Bridgford, owner of Bridgford Meat Packing Co., said, "The charges came as a complete surprise to us; however, the complaint is based on the prices that we have paid for live cattle, which prices the government alleges are in excess of the regulation.
"There is no complaint concerning the prices which the Bridgford Packing Co. has charged in the sale of its products."
Bridgford explained that his firm works almost continuously on orders to supply meat for the government and that many of the orders are for months ahead. He exhibited one order for delivery in March which was given to the company last October.
"It is impossible for us to say what prices we will pay for cattle that far in advance," he explained, "so it would be silly for us to promise, as we've been asked to do, not to pay more than the maximum ceiling price. Our course," he added, "we are not going to pay any more than we have to for meat."
The actions filed seek to join the payment of prices for cattle above maximum ceiling either directly or indirectly. The also prohibit offering, soliciting or agreeing to make such purchases." Harrington stated that the slaughterers who are complying with OPS regulations are placed at a competitive disadvantage unless the government moves to stop the overpayment practice.
The hearing will come up before Judge Benjamin Harrison on Jan. 28.
