‘Hospitality House’ of Tim Wallaces Has Room for Play, Charm for the Elderly
By IJOAN S. WHITE
The new home of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Wallace might well be called “hospitality house” because of the way its design and decor meet every requirement for formal and informal entertaining and provide for comfortable day to day living besides.
Entertaining, especially at holiday time, makes specific demands on a house; there must be ample room, a pleasant background, and adequate facilities for festivities as well as for the preparations they involve. The Wallace home is outstanding on every count.
A mere five months old, the lovely new house is located in the fashionable North Helena section at 607 North Helena Street, and is characterized by the broad bay window under its sloping roof and the lacy iron scroll work which decorates the entry-way. The exterior is of white stucco in combination with redwood siding, highlighted by a generous flagstone planter.
Work of Art
Beckoned by the inviting appearance of the outside of the house, guests find the interior breathtakingly beautiful. Vivacious Mrs. Wallace has an unerring eye for combining materials and coloring, and that coupled with her love for antiques has produced a formal living room and adjoining dining room that are truly works of art.
A small entrance hall marked by crystal candelabra separate these two rooms and all are carpeted from wall to wall with deep piled rose-beige carpeting. Furnished with mahogany, the dining room is papered in a handsome design and will seat ten comfortably.
In the living room, the 16-foot bay window is the center of interest and as such is effectively dressed in Cohanna hand blocked satin quilted draperies which hang from a wide cornice box covered with the same material. This provides the perfect setting for the jewel-like frosted overlay luster lamp with hand-made fluted shade of lace over satin, exquisite in its detail.
Conversation groupings are arranged about the big room at the fireplace with its matching twin love seats, at the tapestry davenport centered under an oil painting imported from Norway, and at still another corner where a price-less antique table, beautiful lamp, and needlepoint chair compliment each other.
As a final decorator’s touch, the walls are done in cyclemen and grey.
Easy Going Informality
For direct contrast, the hallway leads to a rumpus of considerable size situated back of the house to over a landscaped terrace. A plate glass wall serves to enclose patio seem a part of the house.
This very informal room-den arrangement is that where Tim Wallace, a big man who loves the outdoor laxes in the leather covered before an open fire, and his son Mike, aged 10 and a brings his friends to romance television.
Easy going, honey hospice exudes from every inch of sloping open rafters, warm paneling, and the red brick that nearly covers one wall in an open shelving house that is fully many sporting trophies. Red leatherette bar tops formica saves steps to the left for adults and children since it is equipped with rain water, a miniature pantry considerable storage space.
Red Ceiling
This very spacious house compasses 2600 square feet. Planning provides a separate room wing, shun’ts every day way from the formal and dining room, and establishes a convenient and very attractive service area.

ROOM TO RELAX—Call if what you will, this room is more "lived-in" than any other in the Wallace home. Its sturdy, rather home-spun furnishings have been chosen with an eye toward comfort and blend equally well with provincial touches of pine paneling and brick hearth or modern window wall and television center. Golf-Ball Sized Snails Invade Central Park Lake
NEW YORK UP—Strange snails about the size of golf balls have invaded Central Park lake.
Custoff shells by the hundreds are visible around the edges of the frozen lake.
The American Museum of Natural History made three guesses about the unusual specimens yesterday: They may be of Japanese or European origin or a variant of a species long known in the eastern United States.
The Department of Agriculture's bureau of entomology and plant quarantine is investigating, too.
Snails, the bureau said, can multiply like rabbits and may spread human diseases.
Upset of the Year
NEW YORK UP—A short left hook shot through the sultry air, landed flush on the jaw of Ezzard Charles and 10 seconds later, a weeping Jersey Joe Walcott was crowned heavyweight champion of the world.
The sensational victory of the 37-year-old gladiator, a 5 to 1 underdog in his fifth crack at the crown, was chosen today as the Upset of 1951 by sports writers and sportscasters participating in the annual Associated Press year end poll.
