For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Other foundations can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.—L Cor. 3:11. A YEAR AGO — Mrs. Grace Kirkpatrick, 57, became the first traffic fatality of 1954 as result of an accident at Orangethorpe and Gilbert. Edith Stillians, 65, and three others were injured. Dixon Tubbs, the smog abatement commissioner, got complaints about smudge pots. Louis Koolhaas' petition for a 150-cow dairy in the Cypress area was denied by the county planners. Orange county water district voters approved the Metro water. 12-1 Capt. Russell Sturgis was placed in command of the reactivated Seal Beach Amme Depot. Pfc Arnold Lobo, 21, of Capistrano, was reported killed in action in Korea. Death claimed Mrs. Lou Harris, 80, and Mrs. Jean Blantner, 81. Joseph Wagers and Robert Gaerte became the proud papas of baby daughters. That happened a year ago when Red human sea tactics won Wonju... "BRAINS' FOR 'BEAUTY' — Marie Wilson, the screen's "dumb blonde," chats with a former Quiz Kidz-Martha Manor (r.), who stands in for Marie on Hollywood picture locations. Toastmasters Prepare for Speech Course the mule-back ride down into the Grand Canyon. Timekeeper was Melvin Mungerson. Marcus Gartner gave the Evaluation, assisted by Lewis Boys. Topic Master of the evening was Marion Plokel who led an im- ANNUAL REPORT—Fire Chief Ed Stringer’s annual report makes some mighty interesting reading. Anaheim’s total fire losses for 1951 were $5764. That’s mighty good news, because it’s money in your pocket. Fire insurance rates, like all other insurance rates, are figured on anticipated losses. If fire losses are kept at a minimum, fire insurance rate will be low. Fire Chief Ed Stringer and his efficient staff of regulars and volunteers are to be congratulated. It is through their efficient workmanship that the losses were kept at the low figure. SUGGESTION—Ellis Ackerman who used to meet the helicopter at the local heliport to pick up Fullerton’s airmail, once asked: “Wonder how the postal receipts of Fullerton and Anaheim compare?” “About the same,” his friend guessed. It was a good guess. Anaheim postal receipts for 1951 were $198,535; Fullerton’s were $192,-845, while Santa Ana showed a figure of $701,050. You don’t have to be a statistician to see that those figures reflect the business trend of Orange county. REFLECTION—With Ike willing to run, a lot of political “gooses” will be cooked. DEVELOPMENT — Energetic Ernie Moeller is well pleased with the figures Homer Wallace released showing that Anaheim building for 1951 showed considerable industrial development. Toastmasters Prepare for Speech Course Anaheim Toastmasters club held their first meeting of the new year with a varied program of speeches and announcements of plans for the next few weeks. Chairman of the evening, Dr. J. Erseck, opened the meeting with a short inspirational talk on the advantages of better understanding through better communication through the use of effective speech. Toastmaster of the evening, Louis Taylor, introduced the speakers who included Jack Hayward, who described “A Hobby that Pays,” a short narrative of boating and fishing for fun and profit, which won him a Toastmaster’s Trophy for the best effort of the evening. He was followed by Ray Damerell whose “Memories of the Bright Angel Trail” presented a description of World Affairs Expert to Speak Light will be thrown on the drama of international affairs by Dr. Anton De Haas who will speak to Fullerton junior college students at their weekly assembly Friday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m., in the auditorium. Dr. De Haas, who is professor of international relations at Claremont Men’s college, has been highly recommended as a speaker to college students; said Miss Marguerite Waters, Fullerton dean of women. He is a widely known lecturer on world affairs and world trade. Having come to the United States from Holland in 1904 as a young man, he became a citizen in 1917. Dr. Haas received his mule-back ride down into the Grand Canyon. Timekeeper was Melvin Mungerson. Marcus Gartner gave the Evaluation, assisted by Lewis Boys. Topic Master of the evening was Marion Pickel who led an impromptu roundtable discussion on short speeches on simple subjects. Guy Tester, chairman of the Educational committee, announced that all plans had been completed and the program schedules have been distributed for the assignments during the Speech course which the local group will present starting Jan. 21. The course will cover eight week series of lectures on the various phases of speech making and follows the outline given by Toastmasters International. Guests of the evening included Fank McGuire and Guy Holman. The meeting was under the chairmanship of Erseck and was held in the banquet room of Lum's cafe. WASHINGTON (AP) — Three House Republicans appealed today for a Congressional investigation of the administration of justice by the federal courts in connection with recent tax scandals. DEVELOPMENT — Energetic Ernie Moeller is well pleased with the figures Homer Wallace released showing that Anaheim building for 1951 showed considerable industrial development. Daystrom, Northrop and Robertshaw-Fulton built plants in Anaheim last year. In 1952, these concerns will begin production. The Daystrom Corporation is in the process of moving its plant, machinery and personnel to Anaheim. Northrop is tooling up, machinery is being set up. Robertshaw-Fulton is in the process of hiring personnel to augment the key men necessary to get production rolling. Anaheim men and women will be employed by these plants. There is also a possibility that the U.S. Motors will begin to build in 1952, thus adding another major industry to Anaheim's growing economy. RECORD — Orange county's highway death toll also reached a new record high—119 officially dead and countless thousands injured. Do yourself a favor. Drive carefully. NITECAPSULE — There are those who believe that child psychology isn't half as effective as the trip to the woodshed was in the old days. MANILA (UP) — Two moderate earthquakes were felt Monday in Dumaguete in the south-central Philippines. WASHINGTON (UP) — Senator Ferguson (R-Mich) said today he believes the Senate will want some assurance Japan will not recognize communist China before it ratifies the Japanese Peace Treaty.
