by JOHN S. NEUBAUER
Be not overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.—Rom. 12:21.
REMEMBER—A year ago, headlines proclaimed that Bushman, the Chicago ape, had died... Clarence Howe, 2-year-old Buena Park tot, died after drinking cleaning fluid... Pvt. John C. Bravo was listed as the first war casualty of the New Year... Dixon Tubbs cracked down on growers firing with faulty pots... Warren DeWitt, 24-year-old Anaheim soldier, was killed near Riverside as he returned to March Field after a holiday furlough... Doug Updyke had an unexpected caller—the "pants burglar"... Stanton Williams became the first proud father of the New Year... Eighteen were injured in county holiday traffic... Fullerton defeated Placer college, 57-56, in a New Year's eve cage game.
NEW YEAR—and now, before continuing, may we wish you a joyous, prosperous 1952. This is a year of destiny. Anaheim will grow—both residentially and in-the thick of things yesterday and deserves another hearty pat on the back for his fine horsemanship.
CRIMINOLOGY—By now you know all about how that pasty-faced 18-year-old lad from the reformatory lured an attractive Santa Ana housewife to his mother's home on a pretext and then whacked her over the head with a clawhammer.
That's today's front-page news! That sickening story should be another reminder that potentially dangerous individuals should not be loosed on society to prey for innocent victims.
The lad, now held in the county jail on a charge of assault with intent to commit murder, was on furlough from a reformatory.
Police files show that the Santa Ana youth was committed to the reformatory for molesting a six-year-old girl.
He was picked up and questioned in 1950 in connection with the accusations of an 11-year-old girl. Three months later was grilled for assertedly fondling a nine-year-old.
SIMILARITY—There is a similarity in this case and that of the recently completed McCracken murder case.
Both had similar police doziers. The Santa Ana youth was a furloughed from a reformatory. The convicted slayer of the little Buena Park girl also had molested children. In fact, he committed

NEW YEAR—And now, before continuing, may we wish you a joyous, prosperous 1952. This is a year of destiny. Anaheim will grow—both residentially and industrially. Yes, 1952 will be a good year.
CONGRATULATIONS—It was a olce race, but the stork won. Adolf Schoepe's birthday is New Year's Day. Last Monday night his wife presented him with a brand new baby daughter just a short time before the stroke of midnight. So, it's a December 31 birthday for daughter and January 1 birthday for pop. (Even in the matter of baby's birthday you can count on our Anaheimer-of-the-Year and his wife to come up with a sensational climax.)
TELEVISION CAVALIER — William "Wild Bill" Wallop and his fine mount Reina cut quite a figure in the Tournament of Roses parade yesterday. Representing the Anaheim C. of C., Bill was spotted between the Boy Scouts and the United States Marines. Incidentally, Reina became famous in western horse circles recently when a major publication described her as an "Anaheim Saddle Bred" horse. Instead of being the developer of a new breed of horse as many people supposed, Bill explains he was victimized by a misprint. Reina actually is an "American Saddle Bred." Anyway, Bill was in SIMILARITY—There is a similarity in this case and that of the recently completed McCracken murder case.
Both had similar police doziers. The Santa Ana youth was a furloughed from a reformatory. The convicted slayer of the little Buena Park girl also had molested children. In fact, he committed the heinous crime that sent him to San Quentin's death row two weeks after he had been released from the county jail.
Last year numerous so-called "sexual psychopaths" were apprehended in Orange county. Many of them were committed to institutions. Some may already have been pronounced "cured" and are back in society.
LAX LAWS—Many potentially dangerous individual has been released from asylums and institutions as being harmless.
No one who is a potential criminal is harmless!
An indignant public should demand that depraved potential menaces to society should be properly taken care of and not released to prey for some innocent victim.
The youth now held for the assault on the young Santa Ana housewife should never have given the freedom to perpetrate his lustful act.
CHALLENGE—The lust-crazed youth's attack on the Santa Ana housewife and mother should be another grim reminder that something must be done to curb the impetuosity of the depraved minority; otherwise a woman or child won't be safe at home or on the streets.
Such cases as this are a challenge to those who make and enforce our laws. Such cases, too, are challenge to all of us which to live quiet, well-regulated lives in peaceful environment.
