California Women Out-Number State's Men, Industrial Relations Man Reports
Any California male who congratulates himself as one of the male population which has the upper hand over the female population is dreaming. Number-wise, the California male is a has-been according to Paul Scharrenberg, director of Industrial Relations for the California State Department of Industrial Relations.
Scharrenberg presented the following year-end report on the advance of California women, especially wage earners:
At one time California had considerably more men than women. In 1390 there were only 73 women for every 100 men. By 1910 this situation had improved somewhat. In that year there were 80 women for every 100 men. By 1920 the ratio had increased 89 to 100. In 1940 there were 96 to 100.
Now the situation has been reversed and for the first time we have more women in the California population than men. At present, there are 103 women for every 100 men.
More women were employed in California during 1950 than at any time in the entire history of the state. In October 1951 an all-time high of 1,464,000 women was reached. This figure included self-employed persons as well as wage and salary workers and was about 2½ times the April 1940 female workforce of 656,000.
It is particularly significant that the number of employed women in California increased 120 percent since 1940 compared with a population increase of around 60 per cent.
Albert Marcoux, Jr. Member of Murrelet
Serving aboard the minesweeper USS Murrelet in the Far East is Albert A. Marcoux, Jr., hospital corpsman, first class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert A. Marcoux of 311 N. Pine st., Anaheim, and husband of Mrs. Alice Marcoux of 849 Orange ave., Long Beach.
Marcpux entered the Naval service in April, 1942.
Since her arrival in the Far Eastern area, the Murrelet has been actively engaged in mine-sweeping operations and in the blockade of the North Korean coast line.
The Murrelet is now operating in the Hungnam-Songjin-Chongjin area.
NEW BED COMPANION FOR PIPE SMOKERS
LONDON (UP) — You smokers can take your pipe to bed if you want—and without any danger of setting the place on fire.
This is the claim of a London pipe manufacturer whose new "Hurricane" pipe is equipped with a plastic cap. The cap pivots for tobacco lighting and prevents ashes being blown about by the wind or clothing being burned by lighted tobacco. The cap has six holes which allow air to penetrate into the pipe bowl.
