Lundeen, manager of the Ocean-side bank, testified that Naumcheff was the man who borrowed $250 from the local bank Dec. 11, under the name of Ray Collins, and also was the man who borrowed $140 from the Oceanside bank Nov. 19, 1951, under the name Ralph Nelson. Lundeen also related that Naumcheff borrowed $200 from his bank in Apr. 1950, on which he failed to make even the first payment. He used a still different name and a slightly different story at that time, Lundeen said. Naumcheff was picked up by police in Fillmore, Calif., Dec. 21, and turned over to Anaheim police. Anaheim Police Lieutenant Thomas Taylor, who brought Naumcheff from Fillmore, revealed that the accused man had been a deputy sheriff in Yuma county, Ariz. If You Drive! Then for $2,000,000 his Freedom Newspapers Inc. bought the three main valley dailies—the Brownsville Herald, Harlingen's Morning Star, and McAllen's Evening Monitor. "From his Santa Ana, Calif., headquarterers, old 'R. C.' himself rode into the valley on a bus to reshape the papers according to Holles. He threw out Drew Pearson's column, replaced him with Fulton Lewis, George Sokolsky, and his own column. His favorite campaign: a bitter, continuous assault on public schools on the ground that free, tax-supported education violates the Ten Commandments. Taxing those who do not use public schools, he says, is stealing. Crackpot Cerebrations "To readers of the seven other papers in Holles' string of small-city dailies, such crackpot cerebrations have come to be part of the routine grist from the Holles mill, to be taken with the news. Among other Holles convictions: Herbert Hoover and the National Association of Manufacturers are too leftish, churches are socialistic, majority rule should be abolished, and so should aid to Europe, all involuntary taxes and unions. Most of his readers have no choice but to read Holles papers; in nine of the 10 cities there is no competition. But there have been violent objections. Four times his plants have been struck. Once his home was bombed." "Residents of the valley took different action. Meetings protested Holles' stand. The McAllen P-TA sent parents a statement which suggested canceling subscriptions 'to a paper which denounces... public schools.' The Monitor lost 2000 readers, circulations of the others also said. Robertshaw-Fulton Co. Enters New Industrial Field Robertshaw - Fulton Controls Company has taken the first steps in its program of entering the industrial electronic measurement and controls field, through the acquisition of the Fielden Instrument Corp. of Philadelphia, it was announced by John A. Robertshaw, president. For the present, Fielden Instrument Corp. will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Robertshaw-Fulton Controls Co. The company was acquired for cash but details of the purchase price were not disclosed. In making the announcement Robertshaw declared that the Fielden organization has made important progress in developing and making instruments in the electronic field." The Fielden acquisition will enable us to offer industry many combinations of control valves and regulators with electronic instrumentation and should enlarge our potential market," Robertshaw said. Anti-Holles Crusade Then Houston Lawyer-Industrialist Rory Hofheinz, $3), who had opened a 50,000-watt radio station, KSOX, in Harlingen, joined the attack on Holles in an all-out crusade over the air. His station also began taking ads away from the Holles papers. Partly because he was pinched by this competition and partly because they disagreed with him, Holles fired the three editors who had stayed on when he bought the papers, Time Magazine said. (A Santa Ana Holles-man, T. N. (Brick) Gaines, formerly Register wire editor, recently left California to assume a new position on the McAllen Evening Monitor.) Radioman Hofheinz broadcast a defense of the editors, added: "There may be those who say that Holles is a harmless crackpot. A man backed with a reputed $20 million and a chain of newspapers cannot be classed as a harmless crackpot." It looked as if Holles might have to mend his editorials, if he wanted to stay in the valley," the magazine concluded.
