Communist stupidity
The communists are playing it up.
Each incident like the present one—holding Americans for random of one kind or another—hardens and unifies American think.
It prepares feeling here for the most drastic measures against communism, when said if this government thinks they’re necessary.
The $120,000 collected for the four American filers can’t compensate the communists for the hatred, contempt and revulsion stirred up here.
That communism is bent on world conquest is taken for granted. But sailing and mistreating a few Americans is hardly consible.
What’s the smartest tactic for the communists where we’re concerned? It’s this: to keep American opinion divided on the action to be taken against communism, in ideal and degree, and for this reason:
The more unified we are, not only on the need for action, but on the need for strong action, the more dangerous we are.
And there has been strong division of opinion here. Last winter provided a good example in the debate on sending troops to Europe. There was wide support for the idea we should withdraw behind the two oceans.
This was the ostrich approach.

As a matter of course, there are not wanting croakers who predict that we will have a dry winter. As a matter of fact, the wettest winters in California have been those in which the rains did not set in until Christmas so that if any judgment can be formed upon the basis of the experience of past years, we will get have rain enough and to spare. The San Diego Union says that "Captain Porter tells the folks in Spring Valley that the more unified we are, not only on the need for action, but on the need for strong action, the more dangerous we are.
And there has been strong division of opinion here. Last winter provided a good example in the debate on sending troops to Europe. There was wide support for the idea we should withdraw behind the two oceans.
This was the ostrich approach to reality, of course; since it was withdrew, Europe will to resist would be weakened. Europe would have been duckroup for the communists, if the isolationists had won.
American thinking has been divided on other great issues involved in stopping communism, and for various reasons, including obvious political ones.
But American resolution to the killing and mistreatment of Americans behind the Iron Curtain was instant and unanimous: a bitty, corrupt, violent, unnecessary, inhuman performance.
It had the effect of uniting Americans in active hatred.
If this hatred is intensified by new irritations it will have far-reaching effect on decisions made by the government for those decisions, fanned by hate, will be more active, not more passive.

predict that we will have a dry winter. As a matter of fact, the wettest winters in California have been those in which the rains did not set in until Christmas so that if any judgment can be formed upon the basis of the experience of past years, we will have rain enough and to spare. The San Diego Union says that, "Captain Porter tells the folks in Spring Valley that the first season he was in that place there was no rain until the 8th of January, and that was a good wet winter."
We observe in a late number of the "Alta" some facts in relation to former seasons, which are interesting. It seems that the first notable drought since the gold discovery was in 1850-51, when only 7½ inches of rain fell in San Francisco, but at that time the agricultural interests of the state were insignificant relatively, and the mines were rich enough to pay even in a dry year. In 1862-63, the rainfall measured 19 inches, and in 1883-84, it was 10 inches, the hardship being greatly increased by two such seasons coming together, the loss of cattle in Southern California was very great. The last drought, in 1870-71 was less severe, for though the rainfall was only 14 inches, it was so distributed that it was as favorable to grain crops as other seasons, when the amount was larger but less regular in its coming.
The Anaheim Lighter Company held their annual meeting for the election of board trustees yesterday afternoon at Kroeger's hall. The following gentlemen were elected to serve for the following year: J. P. Zeyn, L. Halberstadt,
S. Arthur and M. Nixon representing the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation Company, were in Anaheim on Monday in conference with William Crowther and A. S. Bradford of the Anaheim Union Water Company, relative to litigation matters now before both companies. Attorney Keech and Engineer H. Clay Kellogg were in attendance. The conference which was in executive session was held in Attorney Melrose's office. It was reported after the meeting that the injunction suit against O. B. Fuller of Riverside County would be pressed. Fuller last year built a ditch tapping the river for 1000 more inches of water that was the property of the two Orange County companies. An injunction suit against him was immediately brought. It was tried before Judge Noyes of Riverside, the close political advocate of Fuller. Noyes held that itasmuch as the two water companies had not shown that they were damaged by Fuller taking the water, therefore he declined to issue an injunction preventing Fuller taking more water. The case will soon come to trial upon its merits before a Los Angeles court. The case against Newberry may drag along in the United States court for years. Newberry recognizes the hopelessness of his cause and some weeks ago asked for a "conferenced" with the water companies to effect, if possible, a friendly settlement of points of issue. This was declined and since then Newberry's activity at Rincon has in part subsided.

WASHINGTON — One of the most amazing things about "Mystery Man" Henry Grunewald is the way he has been able to ingratiate himself with those in high places.
Henry is able to alip in to see the vice president, has a letter of thanks from President Truman for a campaign contribution, drops in to see GOP Senator Brewster of Maine who calls him "Henry," and got GOP Senator Bridge of New Hampshire to help him pull wires on a tax fraud case. He has three limousines, a winter house in Miami Beach, a summer house at Spring Lake, N.J., and uses the Washington Hotel apartment of former Secretary of War Harry Woodring.
How he manages all these contacts no one exactly knows, especially in view of the fact that he was unwilling to answer any questions about himself before the King committee.
However, strangest of all connections was with the former allen property custodian, Leo Crowley—despite Crowley's denials. Grunewald had such a close friendship with Crowley that he was actually authorized to speak for him at stockholders' meetings of the big alien corporations in wartime.
Crowley now says: "I don't remember Grunewald." However, at
However, strangest of all connections was, with the former allen property custodian, Leo Crowley—despite Crowley's denials. Grunewald had such a close friendship with Crowley that he was actually authorized to speak for him at stockholders' meetings of the big alien corporations in wartime.
Crowley now says: "I don't remember Grunewald." However, at the time he was hired, Crowley's office put a memo in the files showing his astonishing trust in "The Dutchman" by stopping any investigation of Grunewald's past. Grunewald's Past
"The office of the custodian has investigated Mr.' Grunewald," Crowley's office stated on Aug. 25, '42, and because of the nature of the work to be performed by this man for the custodian, it is requested that the Civil Service commission refrain from making any investigation of Mr. Grunewald. His record is entirely satisfactory to the custodian."
Perhaps what Crowley wanted to cover up was Grunewald's record as a government prohibition agent. This showed he was demoted from $1000 to $1200 a year on Jan. 12, 1923, and finally was kicked out of the government on Oct. 8, 1923, after being indicted by a New York grand jury in connection with the "illegal removal and disposition of liquor."
Later, in a job application, Grunewald gave this version of property to C. L. Pearson for his nine-acre Valencia orange grove on South Los Angeles street, half a mile below the city limits. Mr. Aulay moved to their new home this week, and Mr. Pearson has possession of the apartments. Both properties were valued at $40,000. The Mann apartments consist of two large two-story buildings and a nice five room bungalow.
By a decisive vote the electors of Orange county Tuesday defeated the proposal for a county bond issue for improvement of Newport Harbor. The vote with his indictment: "In October, 1925, while I was a general agent assigned to the New York prohibition office, I was indicted by a federal grand jury in the southern district of New York for conspiracy to violate the federal prohibition law. The indictment named a number of individuals, including Mr. Roawell A. Saver and myself. The case against me was dismissed after a verdict was indicated to the jury by Federal Judge Winslow.
$9 Years an Allen
"In fairness to myself," Grunewald explained, "I believe that should add that the whole indictment was a move in a political battle raging in New York at that time, and the prohibition unit was simply a pawn."
Here are some more things which the mystery man might have told the King committee but didn't:
Grunewald was born May 19, 1892, at Port Elizabeth, South Africa, but neglected to become naturalized as an American citizen until Feb. 6, 1942. This was two months after Pearl Harbor and after he went to work for the allen property custodian.
For years, as an allen, Grunewald worked for various branches of the government. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1909 to 1914 worked as a desk clerk at the Naval Young Men's Christian Association in Brooklyn, got a job in 1915 as a bookkeeper for Western Electric in New York City.
His first job as an investigator came in 1917, when he secured a temporary appointment with the old FBI. In 1919, he served as confidential investigator for the Republican National committee at $0000. In 1921 he got a $4000 car. It is the purpose control to halt the accident occurs. In addition, mention of Motor Vehicle that there are more in California than license so the patrol will stay up on drivers license blockades.

possession of the apartments. Both properties were valued at $40,000. The Mann apartments consist of two large two-story buildings and a nice five room bungalow.
By a decisive vote the electors of Orange county Tuesday defeated the proposal for a county bond issue for improvement of Newport Harbor. The vote, with two small precincts missing was "yes," 11,062, "no," 9818. As it requires a two to one favorable vote to carry a bond issue it lacked 8174 votes of carrying.
There was a time not many years ago when City Clerk Merriott was able to boast, year after year, that there was not a single delinquent tax payer on his list. That time has passed, there are quite a number now, but the list is considerably shorter this year than it was a year ago. Miss Helen Creamer of the city hall force has furnished us with figures showing 107 delinquents on the list which is 23 less than last year. In 1925-28 the total sum delinquent was $2274.37, whereas this year it is $2372.18, a difference of $97.81.
In spite of bad weather, thousands of persons visited the Rabbit show in the Hartman building at the corner of Center und Olive streets. Fifteen hundred specimens of the Bunny family were on exhibition and there was a beautiful display of pelts. Rabbit breeders from all parts of southern California attended the convention. Fifteen hundred dollars in cash and many silver cups were awarded the prize winners.
Grunewald has also developed some interesting contacts in the liquor business, and as late as 1944 he was under investigation by the alcohol tax unit for alleged black-marketing in liquor.
Grunewald also spent from 1928 to 1942 as a personal, confidential investigator for Henry W. Marsh, the insurance mogul, at a stated salary of $12,000 to $18,000.
Note—in his tax returns Grunewald does not give the source of large chunks of income. This column is still mystified how from such a relative modest salary and background, he was able to operate two homes, three limousines and developed so many high contacts.
A limited number of graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy may be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Marine Corps.
In World War II, Army and Air Force total casualties amounted to 9 per cent of a total mobilization of 10,400,000.

The big issue involved is whether or not the state can secure another San Francisco-Oakland crossing, which is contemplated eventually, and also secure fifty million dollars worth of approaches, all on future toll money. If the commuters association is successful in blocking plans to refinance the bridge, construction of a second crossing to be paid for with tolls would be virtually an impossibility.

Hope Entertains Vets From Carrier 'Boxer'
By TOM K. DANSON
ABOARD USS BOXER, SAN DIEGO — It is a well known fact that there is a shortage of stage space at NBC in Hollywood, but leave it to Bob Hope to solve the oroblem. I went with Bob aboard the USS Boxer, considered one of the larger of our aircraft carriers in active duty, for the first transcontinental television broadcast of comedy show from the deck of a ship. It was the Bob Hope version of "Sound Off" over NBC-TV.
The engineering department had a few problems in setting up for this unusual telecast because of the abundance of steel in the ship's structure, which interfered with the microwave line of sight. The kinescope also showed a few flaws because of a difference in electrical cycles; however, before "zero" hour, all was "ship shape."
Rehearsals proved to be more difficult than under ordinary circumstances, due to the open air effect and "old man Sol" boating down into the eyes of the performers. Once, during the dress rehearsal, Bob, figured the orchestra, directed by Les Brown, had jumped the gun on the cue line, so he stopped the action to correct Les. After called back again, and again.
There was lots of fun on board with the "prop" actors in the troupe dressed as admirals, commanders and sailors. When they angoared on deck, rigged out in full uniform and heavy make-up, the regular sailors aboard were googly-eyed with surprise.
Once again, the "Traveling Ambassador of Comedy" recited a hit with a large and enthusiastic audience... and does he love it?
DOWN TV-RADIO ROW ... Got a big kick out of a remark by a marine sergeant on "Perfect Husband" when employee George Fenneman asked him if he had been in Korea: "Nope," the sarge said. "I'm in B Company—I'll 'B' here when they go and 'B' here when they get back." WISHFUL THINKING DEPT... The short-lived "My L.A." is reported being reworked with Broadway as the eventual goal!
TITLE TIPS ... Glennerman Joan Carroll will star in "Girl in a Million," an original comedy, during "Playhouse of Stars" from KNXT (2) at 6... It will be the first acting role in over four years for former comen
a car. It is the purpose of the patrol to halt the accident before it occurs. In addition, the Department of Motor Vehicles reported that there are more automobiles in California than licensed drivers, so the patrol will start checking up on driver licenses during the blockades.
Milk Hearings
The state department of agriculture called its second round of hearings for increases in the price of milk. The first round was a series of hearings in Southern California, and it was predicted at the time that subsequent hearings would be called in northern California to jump milk prices a cent a quart. The northern hearings were called last week. The milk industry secured a cent a quart increase last August. Only chance, it appears, for maintaining prices at present levels is from the Office of Price Stabilization, which must approve any increase. The federal bureau gave its okeh, however, for the August jump: Highest minimum milk price in any of the California marketing areas now is 22 cents a quart.
Farm Labor
The state board of agriculture predicts it will face another tough year for farm help, and blamed the federal government for at least part of the shortage. The board urged the federal government to speed a new farm importation program with Mexico "so that," as one member put it, "it won't be only by the grace of God and good weather" that California can harvest its 1952 crops.
State Surplains
A belated Christmas present for California is expected next March.
Rehearsals proved to be more difficult than under ordinary circumstances, due to the open air effect and "old man Soil" beating down into the eyes of the performers. Once, during the dress rehearsal, Bob figured the orchestra, directed by Les Brown, had jumped the gun on the curtain line, so he stopped the action to correct Les. After checking the script carefully, Hope stepped back to the mike saying, "You're absolutely right, Les, for the first time this year. Guess I'll have to look at the script for a change." He then added, "CBS must have had something to do with this."
During rehearsals, and particularly this one on the open air flight deck, Bob underplayed his lines, and made a point of not revealing the show's punch remarks, so that at show time, everybody would get into the laugh.
"It's very difficult to deliver comedy lines," said the master of monologue, "without an audience reaction ... but just watch what happens when we do it for real."
There’s no question as to how vocalely Constance Moore "hilf" with the boys. During an after-show performance, Connie was above those shown for a year ago; agriculture announced increases for the year in almost every fruit and nut crop in the state over 1950; Capitol buildings and grounds closed the driveway around the state capitol to the public to permit the remodeling operations contemplated. In the park itself, which are incident to the completion of the Capitol annex.
