Loren Herman Leaves to Attend Youth Conclave
Loren Herman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Herman of 940 No. Palm ave., left Christmas afternoon by train to attend the National-Student Volunteer Convention at the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence, as one of five official chosen delegates from the Southern California-Arizona annual conference of the Methodist church. He is a member of White Temple Methodist church in Anaheim, and an agricultural student at California Coy at San Dimas.
The Student Volunteer Movement was founded by the internationally famed Y leader, Dr. John R. Mott, in the early years of the 20th century, and from its ranks have come thousands of college-trained Christian missionary leaders in the service of the world church. Today, with the international situation crying out for leadership a new call is sounding for student volunteers, in the fields of medicine, nursing, agriculture, teaching and social work. The convention at Lawrence will be attended by 5000 delegates from around the world, and will be addressed by the greatest leaders of the world church today. Three of the Southern California delegates are interested in the field of agriculture.
Loren Herman graduated from Anaheim Union High School in Few Miners not Reporting Due To Mine Blast TWEST FRANKFORT, III. A few of the nation's coal mines remained idle today in memorial of West Frankfort mine blasts but there was no indication of a mass work stoppage.
Investigators still are seeking the cause of the explosion that brought death to 119 men.
John L. Lewis, president of United Mine Workers union, said he made some "definite conclusions" about the cause, but wouldn't elaborate.
Federal, state and company investigators, who spent eight hours in the mine yesterday, wait comment until the inquiry on They planned another eight-hour study today.
Lewis had nothing to say about the walkouts or a report he might call a 10-day "memorial week" stoppage." He described the latter as a rumor.
Other union officials said they walkouts were not ordered by the union, but added the men were leaving their jobs in sympathy with the West Frankfort victims.
the class of 1950. He has been a leader at Camp Osceola for several summers, and was a delegate to the Regional Methodist Young Convocation at Fresno two years ago. Only five delegates were located from this section of the country by this denomination, and Herman was one of the first chosen.
