The trail up is rugged and they have stopped for a breather. Left to right, are: Pfc. William Mitchell, Compton, Calif.; Pfc. Merry Upshaw, Pittsview, Ala.; and Pfc. Larry Cummings, Perris Calif.—(Associated Press photo) George Kennan Attacked by Red Paper as Anti-Soviet Thousands of War Veterans Arrive Late at Homes By the Associated Press The last of thousands of Korean war veterans who were returned to the United States "for Christmas" were nearing their homes today. They had not made it. But they would be home for New Years. For 1500 Army, Navy and Air Force men who arrived at San Francisco Christmas eve processing was being completed today. Most of them will be on their way tonight or Thursday. Many a stateswide service still was trying to get home via clogged train, bus or airline facilities. From Oakland, Calif., airport, the Army operated a 70-plane airlift to speed home veterans back from Korea. Officials said the last of them got out Christmas Day. Thirty-nine others who had left Seattle Dec. 21 for New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were grounded all Christmas Day at Des Moines by weather. Before that they had been held up two days at Pendleston, Ore., by engine trouble. At New York 50 wives and children finally took off by air Christmas night for Germany to join husbands and fathers. The women and children, most of them from the south, had waited a week at the Army's Fort Hamilton Base, Brooklyn; for Army transportation to Germany. The Army finally chartered a commercial plane for them. Some of the women complained bitterly about "the Army way of doing things." Forty-six California servicemen from Camp Gordon, Ga., landed at Oakland airport Christmas George Kennan Attacked by Red Paper as Anti-Soviet MOSCOW (R)—George F. Kennan, American diplomat mentioned for the job of U.S. ambassador to Moscow, was attacked today in Pravda, the official communist party paper. It called him a supporter of anti-Soviet organizations and listed the East European fund of the Ford Foundation among these. Kennan resigned as president of the fund Nov. 23. The Pravda attack appeared to be geared to Russia's current "anti-spy" propaganda campaign. Criticism of Kennan's work for the fund was in a dispatch from a Pravda correspondent in the United States. One attack indicated Kennan, a Russian-speaking student of Russian life and widely recognized Western authority on Soviet government affairs, would not be acceptable as ambassador to Moscow. President Truman said Nov. 20 Kennan was being considered to succeed Ambassador Alan G. Kirk. The president commented that Kennan had an important part in developing the American policy for containment of communism and "certainly ought to know his way around out there." Excerpts from the Pravda article printed on the foreign events page, said: "In the current year, the most generous appropriations from this (Ford) fund have been given for activization of underground activity of various anti-Soviet agents and the conduct of subversive anti-Soviet propaganda, particularly radio propaganda. "The fund is managed by the former administrator of the Marshall Plan, Paul Hoffman, and the direct activity of subsidizing anti-Soviet organizations directed by George Kennan, now listed as 'on vacation.'" The Pravda article listed other prominent Americans it said were engaged in various ways in subversive activity against Russia. Among them are former Secretary of State Sumner Welles, ex-President Herbert Hoover, Gen. George C. Marshall, Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark, U.S.U.N. Ambassador Warren R.Austin, New York's Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, and Speaker Sam Rayburn (D-Tex.). HOLLYWOOD (E)—Film Producer Walter Wanger spent a peaceful Christmas day with wife Joan Bennett and their two small daughters yesterday. Today he stands in court face a charge that he assaulted Miss Bennett's agent with a deadly weapon with intent to commit murder. and children, most of them from the south, had waited a week at the Army's Fort Hamilton Base, Brooklyn, for Army transportation to Germany. The Army finally chartered a commercial plane for them. Some of the women complained bitterly about "the Army way of doing things." Forty-six California servicemen from Camp Gordon, Ga., landed at Oakland airport Christmas night, after waiting 38 hours at Bush Field, Augusta, Ga., to start their homeward trip via a non-schedule airline night. At Burbank, Calif., Mrs. Loretta McIntosh bought airline tickets for 112 Marines who had arranged for flights home through her travel service. The chartered plane failed to arrive. The tickets cost Mrs. McIntosh about $2600. Trygve Lie Speaks Over Radio to People of Norway OSLO, Norway (P)—U.N. Secretary-General Trygve Lie said tonight there has been a "slight improvement" in East-West relations and no worsening of the general world situation since the General Assembly opened in Paris Nov. 6. In the Christmas-time broadcast to Scandinavians over the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish radio system, Lie said the tone of speeches in the U.N. this year had been more moderate than usual. (Lie's text dealt in general terms. It did not mention Russia's charges in Paris that the United States is supporting subterrure-spies against the Soviet bloc or American delegation characterization of the charges as ANNOUNCEMENTS Classified rates for Anaheim Gazette Anaheim Gazette Shopper and (minimum 12 words) 1 time $30c 2 times $64c 3 times $72c 4 times $90c 5 times $1.08 Card of Thanks $1.00 In Memorium $1.00 So word last day — The advertiser's address, phone number, etc., must be accurate.
