4 Anaheim Gazette ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA MONDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1951 Bethrothal of Miss Anita Robertson to Willard Gregory Announced at Silver Tea Silver engraved napkins carried news of the betrothal of Miss Anita Robertson and Willard B. Gregory yesterday afternoon at a silver tea given in their honor by Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Robertson. Fifty guests attended the affair held in the Robertson home, 1265 E. Santa Ana st., Anaheim. Bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Robertson, and was graduated from AUHS and FJC, where she affiliated with Kappa Lambda Sigma sorority. She has been a member of the Anaheim Gazette editorial staff for the past year and a half. Her fiance is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard G. Gregory of Glendale, and was graduated from Glendale high school, and Pomona college. He has served a term with the U.S. Air Force. He was editor of the Anaheim Gazette before VISITOR FROM MICHIGAN Miss Helen Matthews, secretary to the mayor of Highland Park, Mich., a city near Detroit, is here on a holiday vacation and visit with Rev. and Mrs. W. McKinley Walker, of 532 S. Lemon, Miss Matthews is a niece of Rev. Walker. Christmas Program At Wesley Methodist A most enjoyable and inspiring Christmas program was observed at Wesley Methodist church at Wilhelmina and N. Los Angeles Sunday night. The program was sponsored by the Sunday School and members of the church. A large, nicely lighted Christmas tree and poinsettias featured the decorations. Mrs. Hugh Nipp assisted by Mrs. Cliff Elliott, emceed the program, with Mrs. Sara Green at the ordan and Miss Pat Brooks at the piano. Under the Christmas tree were placed packages for the White Christmas offering for the needy. Singing of Christmas carols by the congregation featured the song service. Santa Claus made his appearance at the close of the program and lavishly distributed sacks of treats to the children and adults. (Eastwood photo) POPCORN BARS 1 cup beet or cane sugar ½ cup white corn syrup ½ cup water ¼ cup butter or margarine ½ teaspoon each, salt, vanilla 3 quarts popped corn Put sugar, syrup, water, butter and salt in a saucepan and cook, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Continue cooking without stirring until sirup forms a brittle ball in cold water (275 deg). Add vanillia and stir only enough to mix. Place corn in a large bowl. Place sirup over corn mixing well. Wet hands slightly and transfer mixture to a flat cake pan. Press mixture firmly and cut into bars with wet kjlife. For a change of taste, add nuts, candied cherries, gum drops or raisins to the popped corn before combining it with the sirup. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UP) — A city detective who found Police Commissioner Eugene Connor and a woman in a hotel room says he will decide whether to prefer charges when he returns to work from sick leave Wednesday. GIRL FALLS FROM TRUCK Richard Tozer, a Railway Express truck driver, reported to police Saturday that a girl, who had apparently hitched a ride on the truck without the driver's knowledge, fell off the truck when he brought it to a halt on N. Los Angeles st. She left the scene without reporting whether or not she was injured, and she didn't leave her name. Tozer said. He didn't know how long she had been riding on the truck. MILAN. Italy (UP)—A four-engine airliner caught fire and burned after an emergency landing in fog near here last night, but all the passengers and crew escaped before the blaze broke out. JOYCE ENLOE-TOM LAWLER Engagement Told Highlighting the holiday news this week is the announcement of the betrothal of Miss Joyce Enloe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Enloe, to Tom Lawler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Lawler of 401 N. East st. Miss Enloe is a graduate of Anaheim high school and is now employed at the Anaheim Gazette. Her fiance is also a graduate of Anaheim high school and is in the construction line. No date has been set for the wedding. Shown are Sheffner, Patty Sheffner, Karen, Vicky Dorothy Nankervis, Clindy Footo, Michael Croft, Donna Lee, Marian Morgan, Phyllis and Dorothy Jane Ju.—(Gazette photo) Soil Conservation District Gets $100 Gift of $100 of county funds to the newly-formed North Orange County Soil Conservation district has been authorized by the county supervisors, in view of a ruling by County Counsel Joel E. Ogle that such donation was legal if it were established as being of general county interest. Modern submarine telephone cables have amplifiers built into them and designed to work for years under enormous water pressure. The district was not formed in time to get on the tax rolls this year, and had applied to the supervisors for either a loan or gift of $100 to cover incidental expenses until taxes can be levied.
