Disability Rates Increase to $30 Beginning Jan. 1
California's disability insurance maximum rates increase from $30 a week, beginning Jan. 1, at no added cost to workers, v. L. Hetzel, manager of the Long Beach disability insurance office of the California Department of Employment announced today.
He stated that the higher rates and other new amendments to the disability insurance law will apply not only to the State Plan, administered by the Department of Employment, but also to voluntary plans of private insurance companies. However, unemployment insurance benefits remain at a $25 a week maximum.
New Rates Added
The amended disability insurance program provides for the addition of five new weekly rates, ranging from $26 to $30; computation of weekly benefits from $10 to $25 remains unchanged. Increased high quarter base period earnings are required to qualify for the higher benefit amounts.
The new higher rates will be effective only on periods of disability commencing on or after Jan. 1. Disabled workers now receiving disability insurance or whose period of disability began prior to Jan. 1 will not be eligible for increased payments.
Other changes in the law provide more coverage or greater convenience to disabled workers.
Hospital Benefits Broadened
Hospital benefits which first became incorporated into the disability insurance law in 1950 have undergone further liberalization.

Of the 510 American dead who are being brought back to the United States, Marine Pfc. John R. Bruns, husband of Mrs. Roberta G. Bruns, 818 N. Baker, Santa Ana, is the only Orange county warrior on the S. S. Loma Victory.

RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD TRUSTEES OF THE ANAHEM SCHOOL DISTRICT OF ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
December 14, 1951
On motion of Trustee Rector Coons, duly seconded and carried the following Resolution was adopted:
WHEREAS, the Anaheim School District of Orange County is the owner of that certain real property located within a community lease embracing adjoining lands for the production oil, gas and other hydrocarbon stances.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT SOLVED that it is the intention of the Board of Trustees of the Anaheim School District of Orange County, California, to purchase land and build a new school building in Anaheim.
1. Disabled workers now receiving disability insurance or whose period of disability began prior to Jan. I will not be eligible for increased payments.
Other changes in the law provide more coverage or greater convenience to disabled workers. Hospital Benefits Broadened
Hospital benefits which first became incorporated into the disability insurance law in 1950 have undergone further liberalization. The new amendments will permit payment of $8 a day for all days or parts of days, not exceeding the 12-day legal maximum, for which the hospital makes a full day's charge, even though the worker is receiving some form of wages from his employer. Provision is also made to allow the worker to assign his hospital benefits so that payment can be made direct to the hospital.
Another amendment increases the amount of basic benefits the disabled person may receive, if his employer continues to pay wages, by permitting basic benefits in an amount which when added to such wages does not exceed 70 per cent of his last full weekly wage. In any case the State cannot pay more than the weekly benefit rate awarded to For Health, Eat California Fruit!

150 Fires Burn in Chicago During Cold December Day
CHICAGO (UP)—Some 150 fires on Chicago's coldest Dec. 16 on record drove more than 550 persons from their homes, took two lives, and caused an estimated $800,000 property damage.
Two extra alarm fires emptied Negro occupants of an apartment building and a hotel on Chicago's south side into 12 degrees below zero weather. The buildings were destroyed at a loss estimated by firemen at $150,000. Of the 250 occupants, about 100 were children. One baby was treated for exposure.
The fires were only three blocks apart.
An explosion and tire in a trailer home near suburban Morton Grove killed Douglas Roberts, 30, aviation machinist first class, stationed at Glenview Naval Air Station, and his wife, Dorothy, 29. Firemen blamed a butane gas stove.
Firemen reported some 150 fires in the Chicago area and said three-quarters of the city's fire apparatus was in action at time during the day. Theyimated damage caused by heated stoves and furnaces faulty chimneys at $500,000.
A third extra alarm fire on an estimated $150,000 damaged a southside warehouse.

Emma Trapp, 62, a native of Germany who came to Anaheim 28 years ago and who has lived in this vicinity continuously, died Friday at the Anaheim Community hospital after a brief illness. The family home is at 1409 E.
"Mommy, take this stuff off so I can see."
It was chubby Vernie Smith, speaking through bandages, as he awoke after an operation yesterday. Vernie, who is not yet three, was too young to know that taking off the bandages wouldn't help.
His family doctor and an Oklahoma City specialist had just removed his remaining eye. It was the climax to a losing battle he had fought with cancer, which cost him his first eye last February.
The operation came one week after the biggest Christmas party Woodward ever saw for a 2-year-old.
Doctors had said the boy would be blind in a matter of days "with or without surgery." So Cecil Smith, a carpenter, and his wife decided their son would have an early Christmas. They were overwhelmed on being joined by 500 townsfolk. Gifts and greeting poured in from all over the country.
While Vernie had the time of his life, Mrs. Smith began teaching him to get around without using his eyes, and how to avoid such dangers as the hot stove.
"He picked it up right quick," she said.
And when he gets old enough, his life will be made easier by a seeing-eye dog, thanks to the generosity of friends and neighbors.
La Habra Man Fined For Trespassing
Robert J. Barnaby, 27, of La Habra, was fined $100 for trespassing by Anaheim city court Friday afternoon after a complaint was filed on him by Miss June Scott of Anaheim.
Miss Scott charged him with trespassing and illegal entry after witnesses identified him as the man who entered her apartment Friday night while she was away.
