These were among her impressions on a recent trip abroad, Mr. Esther Hatch, former dean of women at Fullerton Juhlor college told a student assembly Friday morning, Dec. 7, in the high school auditorium. "The Europeans regard us as bustling, energetic people, always in a hurry," she said. "They recognize that we work hard, but that we earn high pay and spend freely. I didn't get the impression so many, however, that Europeans are standing around with our stretched hands. They are rebuilding their countries and enduring great many privations." Mrs. Hatch showed colorful slides illustrating the recent three-month journey through Europe made by herself and her husband. Her slides told the story of great contrasts between art treasures and wretched living conditions in some parts of Europe. "Our real interest in the tru was the people, not the places of Europe," she explained. The difference are due to poorer economic conditions rather than anything else." ...and for HER a wide selection of ADORABLE Sunbeam GIFT ITEMS Ironmaster for her ironing pleasure. For Health, Eat California Fruit She noticed, as one difference, a lack of color in the people’s garb, especially in England and Scotland. In Holland, she said, the crowds seemed to be in uniform to the man, wearing khaki-colored raincoats in wet weather. The Swiss and the Danes were the best looking and the French had, indeed, the flair for being well-dressed for which they are famous. For recreation, Mrs. Hatch explained, the Europeans picnic, bicycle or hike. They have the knack of having a very good time on very little money. Americans could learn something from this, she said. “Games are enjoyed by Europeans, but they play for recreation rather than competition. In England, for example, there is much participation in sports but very small crowds of observers.” She found Europeans very friendly and willing to help. Their major false impressions about Americans, she said, are in relation to our social customs. These impressions are often gotten from American movies. They criticize us sharply for extravagance, for instance, and think our drinking problem is merely silly. STUTTGART, Germany (P) — Three small German states have voted to form one big new state covering the entire southwest corner of Germany. With a little organization and planning, Christmas shopping can be fun instead of a hectic ordeal that leaves you with shattered nerves and a collection of ill-assorted presents. If shopping simply wears you out, make plans to do it in installments. The stores are open in Anaheim every night until nine o’clock for your convenience. In favor of a calmer, more serene you, hubby will probably not mind sitting with the kiddies while you go down town for an hour or so after the dishes are done. And another thought for mother is the kiddle movie, free of charge every Saturday morning beginning at 11 a.m. The children do enjoy this supervised showing which lasts for three hours and once again, mother is free for some unencumbered shopping. Movie tickets for this show are available at some 15 stores in the 100 block on W. Center without obligation. The stores are the least crowded early in the morning so it may be wise to leave the breakfast dishes. If necessary, to get to the store as soon as it opens. Then you will be ready to leave before the crowd. Some pre-shopping at home is an excellent idea. Study the newspaper ads each day to see what is being offered and where and then your list can be made up away from crowds and confusion. An itinerary for each day’s shopping will help. Important for frayed nerves—take a few minutes now and then to relax and get your thoughts in order.
