Bee Cagers Continue in Winning Way
Remaining undefeated after four games, the Anaheim Bee cage team shot itself to its very easy 48-28 practice game victory over Corona Friday afternoon in the local high gym with all members of the local quintet looking like a very explosive team, although coach Bill Hunstock kept the score down.
Hunstock substituted freely after the first quarter and again a few minutes after the start of the third quarter, although he did put the first unit back into the game late in the final period, but they just couldn't get rolling again, but by that time, H. L. Looney's team was too far behind.
First quarter score was Anaheim 9, Corona 7 and the half time score was Anaheim 19, Corona 11. Third period score was Anaheim 33, Corona 18.
Fred Frank, center, never looked better at rebounding and blocking off the boards. He truly displayed great form and for so early in the season.
Another top player on the team in the Corona game was little Frank Navarro who was playing very steady and guarding close. He scored eight points per game.
Anaheim vs Brea-Olinda in HB Cage Tourney Tomorrow at 3 p.m.
Tomorrow afternoon at 3 Anaheim high enters the annual Huntington Beach tourney against Brea-Olinda who just this past week end captured the consolation bracket in the Hart Invitational basketball tourney.
Brea entered the tourney not having played one game, but quickly gained experience and victories as well to advance into the final round and win for the gold trophy.
Brea lost the first game to a powerful Calexico five by the score 56-19, then turned their eyes to the win column by scooting past Serra 44-19, then going the same thing to Parmont-Brethren only by the score 44-33. In the finals of the consolation bracket, the Wildcats rolled past Flintridge 44-33.
Picked on the all tourney team was center from Brea, Joe Gudmanson who stands 62" and is a returning letterman. The red-haired Gudmanson averaged 15 points per game.
Coach Dick Tucker has only three lettermen on the squad, including Gudmanson; Cal Landon and Joe Megtie. Megtie averaged won't be able to play until the turn of the semester.

Colonists in Easy Rout of Corona Friday 64-14 with Footballers Leading Attack
Displaying a very even offensive attack throughout the game Friday afternoon in the local high gym, Anaheim's Colonist varsity basketball squad rolled to an overwhelming 64-14 practice encounter with Corona to capture their third victory in four starts this season.
Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke's cagers were just too much for Roy Merk's small squad, although the visitors jumped out to a four to nothing lead which they held for all of two minutes.
Then Gene Gibson put one in from the free throw line and it wasn't until a full minute later that Gayle Herbel dropped in another point from the free throw line to make the score 4-2, Corona out in front.
Bill Ames then dumped in a jump shot to tie up the game and following that up with a drive in two-pointer, Ames put the locals out in front from where they were never headed again in the game.
At the start of the second quarter the ex-footballers went into the game — John Steinborn, Len Kolb, Jim Holve, Dean Philpott and returning lettermen, Hart Hessell who immediately went on a scoring spree in speedy fashion.
Kolb went in for two points, driving hard into the basketball with Philpott leading the way by blocking out all opposition en route to the goal.
While the locals were piling up 17 points in the second period the visitors made a mere three points to make the score at half time 34-8. In the second half the Red and Yellow clad team made a mere six points, four of which came from the free throw line.
In the entire game Corona was able to make only three field goals although they attempted a grand total of 59 shots at the basket. Their per centage was a poor 05.1 while Anaheim at-

Waterfield Sets Record While Lions Win 24-22
NEW YORK (UP)—The battle for the right to represent the National conference against the Cleveland Browns in the National Football league playoff comes down to the wire Sunday with three teams still in the thick of the fight. And a fourth, San Francisco, has an outside chance of breaking into the picture.
While the Browns were defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-0 yesterday for their second successive American Conference title, the Detroit Lions moved back into first place in the National division by edging Los Angeles Rams 24-22.
The Chicago Bears remained a strong contender with a 45-21 decision over the New York Yanks. San Francisco's 49ers stood ready to move into at least a tie if the leaders slip by turning back Green Bay's Packers, 31-19.
So as the league goes into the final week of regular competition the standings show the Lions leading the National Conference by a half game with a 7-3-1 record. The Rams and Bears each have won seven and lost four for second place. The 49ers have a 6-4-1 record.
Sunday the Lions meet the 49ers at San Francisco with a victory necessary for the conference crown. Only a week ago the 49ers beat the Lions 20-10 at Detroit.
Bob Waterfield kicked five field goals to set a new pro record yesterday.
But the feat chiefly proved that points in the second period the visitors made a mere three points to make the score at half time 34-8. In the second half the Red and Yellow clad team made a mere six points, four of which came from the free throw line. In the entire game Corona was able to make only three field goals although they attempted a grand total of 59 shots at the basket. Their per centage was a poor 0.51 while Anaheim attempted 55 shots and made good on 25 of them for a nifty 45.5 per centage.
Three players tied for high point honors of the game, Bill Ames, Gayle Herbel and John Steinborn all with eight. Substitution was like the platoon system with no one player remaining in the game for any lengthy period.
It got so bad that when ever any Anaheim player made a basket, he had to come out of the game. But it wasn't good, strong competition for Anaheim unless it was the opportunity for them to make free throws.
Corona fouled 27 times while the Colonists fouled 19 times for a near-record number of penalties called in one game. 19 players from the Anaheim bench got into action.

Terrifying Tex Leads Tennis Team to Win; Brandon Drops
Fullerton's C League tennis team yesterday advanced another round on their way to the finals of the Southern California Citizen Winter Tennis League championship when they defeated the Olympic No. 3 team from Exposition Park in Los Angeles in the quarterfinal round play-off.
Tex Middleton of Anaheim with his partner Kenneth Wade of Fullerton added a win point to the 7 to 4 final score when they received a default from Ben Boll and Jim Shabaghien of the Los Angeles team after leading by a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 score. Middleton lost in the singles round to Boll after light 6-3, 7-5 battle. The match was played on the neutral Lakewood courts in Long Beach which will also be the site for the semifinal round between Fullerton and South Gate next Sunday in an 11-match play-off to see which team goes into the final round for the grand championship of the Southern California area.
In additional tennis activity over the meek end Ron Brandon al Anaheim lost out in the quarterfinal round of the Third Annual Arcadia County Park Tennis championships in a hard struggle against Las Wanee of Riverside 7-5, 6-4. Brandon last week had accounted for a real upset when he defeated fourth seeded Mel Gallagher of Hollywood in the first round.
Three of Anaheim's junior girl players have entered the Thirty-Eighth Annual Southern California Mid-Winter Tennis Championships which get under way on December 15 at the West Side Tennis club in Los Angeles. Jean Williams, Anne Williams, and Mary Flynn will play in this tournament which is one of the oldest in California and which because of the large entry field requires two full weeks of play before the ultimate winners are named.

BASEball Confab Over With No Players Traded
NEW YORK (UP)—The windup of the week-long minor and major league baseball conventions today produced nothing but a lot of legislative action which was greeted by yawns from the man in the street.
What happened to all those dynamite deals cooked up last week in Columbus?" they asked.
The plain truth is they turned out to be a lot of duds. An innocent bystander would have wagered a week's scalary that a least one trade would be pulled off the way the club officials, especially Buzzy Bavasi of Brooklyn and Gabe Paul of Cincinnati, hustled around talking shop with anyone who was willing to listen.
But now it's all over. No big cage trades. No sales. No purchases. All owners and managers have left or are en route home and Ted Williams is still with the Boston Red Sox, Eddie Stanky is still the property of the New York Giants, Fred Saigh still is seeking a manager for his St. Louis team.
