Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER
We are God's fellow workers.—I Cor. 3:9.
CALIFORNIANA — The publication of President James K. Polk's annual message, Dec. 5, 1848, authenticated the discovery of gold in California and gave impetus to the gold rush to California.
HISTORICAL NOTES — Since George Hansen, purchased 1165 acres from Juan Pacifico Ontiveras for $2,000 an acre, property values in Anaheim have steadily risen. A lot of Anaheimers have shown considerable interest in the history of their city.
FOUNDER — Who was the founder of Anaheim?
Anaheim is rather unique in that it did not have a founder. A colony of 50 San Franciscans of Germanic extraction had George Hansen select a suitable Southern California site for their wine-growing adventure.
DEVELOPERS — What prompted the 'founders' of other cities to establish townsites?
Many of Southern California cities came into being with the early land booms of the 1860's.

INFLUENCE—Who was one of the most influential citizens of early day Anaheim?
August Langenberger apparently was one of the most influential men in early day Anaheim. He was Ontiveras' son-in-law. He apparently encouraged Hansen to lay out the colony. Some historians believe that he probably suggested the plan. After the establishment of the colony, he became one of the city's first merchants and hotel men.
CONTROVERSY — What produced Anaheim's greatest controversy?
