CALIFORNIANA—On Nov. 27, 1826, Jededish Smith and a group of trappers reached Mission San Gabriel. They traveled southward from Bear River, Utah, and were the first white men to arrive in California overland from the eastern part of the United States. STAGE ROUTE—Did the Butterfield stage route ever go through Orange county? No. The Los Angeles-San Diego Stage line went through Anaheim, cut over to Olive and thence south to San Juan Capistrano. Later, with the development of William Spurgeon's townsite of Santa Ana, Olive was bypassed. RAILROAD — What Orange county city first had railroad facilities? Anaheim. Though the Southern Pacific rail line was first pushed southward from Dewey. Ex-West Pointers Not in Line for Reappointment WASHINGTON (P)—None of the 90 West Point cadets dismissed for cribbing last August will be considered for reappointment under a policy laid down by the Department of the Army. This was disclosed today after at least three members of Congress renominated boys who had been ousted for violating the West Point code of honor by accepting or giving help to aid in passing examinations. The Adjutant General's office sent to each of three House members — Majority Leader McCormack (D-Mass) and Reps. Davis (R-Wis) and Clevenger (R-Ohio) similar letters stating that in view of the circumstances the boys would not be considered for reappointment. An Army spokesman told a reporter today that a flat policy has been adopted "by the Department of the Army" under which any cadet separated from the academy because of an honor violation will not be reappointed even if renominated by a member of Congress. The spokesman declined to say just who in the department drew up the policy. The Adjutant General's office, he said, is merely carrying out this policy when it notified members of Congress that the hour they remonstrate may be delayed. RAILROAD — What Orange county city first had railroad facilities? Anaheim. Though the Southern Pacific rail line was first pushed southward from Downey to what is now Buena Park, the gateway city did not receive railroad service until Anaheim became the terminus of the line. PACIFIC ELECTRIC—Did the Pacific Electric railroad ever contemplate a line to Anaheim? Yes, according to newspaper files, the Pacific Electric wished to run its line through Anaheim. Just after the turn of the century, the railroad of which Paul Shoupe was president, contemplated a network of lines in Orange county. Anaheim was one of its proposed cities. FATALTIES—What railroad crossings are most hazardous? The Pacific Electric crossings were considered the most hazardous crossings. In 1920's more accidents occurred at the electric line crossings than any other railroad. Since the curtailed "street car service" has been in effect, the Santa Fe railroad crossings are most dangerous. TRANSITION — Have many railroad lines in Orange county been abandoned? Several lines have been abandoned. The Santa Ana-Newport road (the McFadden's railroad) was the first line to be taken up. Later the Santa Fe railroad took up its roadbed from Atwood to Olinda. (The Southern Pacific once had a branch line which paralleled the Pacific Electric track from Newport to Huntington Beach. When the tracks were flooded and washed out, they were ripped up and for a time the railroad used its subsidiary's tracks to run to Newport.) DEVELOPMENT — Did the railroads help the development of DEVELOPMENT — Did the railroads help the development of Orange county? The railroad had a marked effect on the growth of Orange county cities. Those with railroad facilities prospered. Anaheim began without railroad facilities, but its growth lagged behind other towns in Los Angeles county that had rail service. Laguna Beach is the only city of significance that developed without the help of a railroad. SCHOOLS — Where were the first public schools? Anaheim had the first public schools in what is now Orange county. Although San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1776, it had its mission school, but Anaheim became part of the Los Angeles school system shortly after its founding. WATER — Was Anaheim's irrigation system the first such system to bring water to Orange county farms? No. Although the Anaheim Water company was the first extensive system, the Spaniards used to irrigate their small plots. Actually, the original Anaheim irrigation ditch paralleled one used to water Ontiverra' garden plot.
