If we find any of these books in use in Anaheim schools, we intend to point it out to the school board and urge they be labeled as such. If they are not labeled, we intend to present the facts to the public and let public opinion decide the matter. Such a situation cannot (and should not) be handled quietly as you suggest. We feel we have every right to insist that there shall be no softening up to the evils of communism and socialism included in their education. One step further, let us discuss the question of reference books in school (and public) libraries. We do not want to remove any of the books therein written by anyone, communist or otherwise. We do feel, however, that if the author of a book is a communist or a proven sympathizer, that fact should be given the reader before he reads the book. Here again, we have lists already prepared by competent, qualified research people, many of whom are former high officials in the communist party and who have at last seen the light and given us much of the pattern we go by. I think Senator McCarren, a Democrat, who is head of the United States Senate Internal Security committee, in an interview with the U.S. News and World Report last week made the problem about as clear as it has ever been expressed when he said, concerning his committee's investigation of the Institute of Pacific Relations, "an organization of high ideals that was taken over by communist infiltration, when he was referring to the method of research by a member of the committee staff, a Mr. Mandell, who was expelled from the communist party in 1920." The obscurities of communist innuendo are no mystery to him. He takes those files and he goes through them methodically and he finds that Mr. So and So directed this and Mr. Thus and So directed that and by their direction, something happened. He takes those files and he goes through them methodically and he finds that Mr. So and So directed this and Mr. Thus and So directed that and by their direction, something happened. Maybe it was another strand in the propaganda web or maybe it affected the line of infiltration into, for instance, a government department. Take the case of Frederick Vanderbilt Field as an illustration. They wanted to get Field into Army Intelligence during the war and they pretty near had him in—and quoting him further, "I want to make an expression here of which I have really become convinced. It isn't always the real communist who belongs to the party and has had years ofindoctrination in the party line—the kind of fellow who used to carry a party card before they stopped issuing cards—that is the most dangerous individual. The greatest danger may be from the fellow who sympathizes with communist ways and communist plans and communist ideas whether he does so knowing that what he sympathizes with is communist or whether he sympathizes with it in the belief that he is merely indulging in liberal thinking. Those san be very dangerous individuals, in my judgment, especially if they are in high and respected places." In closing, we wish to say that we are pleased with the assurance on the part of the high school board that we will have their cooperation. We have not met with the elementary board yet but we feel confident that when our proposal is explained, they too will co-operate with us. We are ed at the favorable resp plan has received from the daily papers in Anal hope that you too are in our action and that we assured of your approvals. End Local Churches White Temple "The Bible on the Table," a new motion picture feature story depicting the importance and use of daily family devotions, will be screened at White Temple Methodist church at the regular 7 o'clock evening service on Sunday night. "At this Thanksgiving season," states the pastor, Rev. Frank E. Butterworth, "we are forcibly reminded of the faithful daily devotions of our forbears who founded this nation. We live again in a day of crisis, and millions need to rediscover vital and practical ways to use the Bible in the home. This film will assist us in this quest." Leaflets outlining daily devotional readings at the family table from now until Christmas have been prepared by the American Bible society, and have been distributed to the membership of White Temple. An additional feature of the evening service will be the first appearance of the season of the Junior choir, directed by Virginia Sims Burk. They will sing, "For the Beauty of the Earth." At the 10:50 a.m. morning service, Chuck Wiggins, Minister of Youth, will preach on the theme "We Are They," supplying the pulpit in the absence of Rev. Frank Butterworth, who is in San Diego this week preaching nightly at Linda Vista Methodist church. Christian Science Man's identity is maintained forever by Spirit according to the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Soul and Body" in all Christian Science churches. The Golden Text is this question put by Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians (3-18): "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" In his declaration to the Athensians as recorded in The Acts, Paul says, "God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; For in him we live, and move, and have our being" (17:24, 25, 28). Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "Sooner or later we shall learn that the letters of man's finite capacity are forged by the illusion that he lives in body instead of in Soul, in matter instead of in Spirit" (p. 222). A free public lecture on Christian Science, sponsored by First Church of Christ Scientist, of Anaheim, will be given in AUHS auditorium tomorrow at 8 p.m. by Thodore Wallach of Chicago, Ill. His subject will be "Christian Science: The Availability of Unlimited Local Churches." New and Better Way of Producing Rain Discovered PASADENA (UP) — Australian scientists have discovered a new and better way to produce rain artificially. The method is so surprisingly simple it’s a wonder nobody thought of it before. All they do is spray low hanging clouds with water. It’s like fighting fire with fire—only with reverse English. And the system is so effective it takes merely one ton of water sprayed on the base of a rain cloud to produce one million tons of rain! Plan to Convert Deserts Dr. E. G. Bowen, a physicist member of the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Research organization, described the new technique yesterday in a speech at the California Institute of Technology. With it, the Aussies hope to convert their vast desert into fertile farmlands. Up to now, clouds have been seeded with dry ice or silver iodide crystals to make it rain. Dr. Bowen said the water method is more effective, especially under conditions encountered in his country. Five Tons of Water “We could carry five tons of water in a medium sized bomber,” he explained. “That should be enough to make some five million tons of rainfall. But I wish to emphasize that thus far in our painstaking research we have used only a few hundred pounds of water at a time. We sprayed that man’s finite capacity are forged by the illusion that he lives in body instead of in Soul, in matter instead of in Spirit.” (p. 223). A free public lecture on Christian Science, sponsored by First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Anaheim, will be given in AUHS auditorium tomorrow at 8 p.m. by Theodore Wallach of Chicago, Ill. His subject will be “Christian Science: The Availability of Unlimited Good.” Christian Science: The Great Physician Understood” will be the subject of a lecture to be broadcast over Station KFWB (980 kc) Nov. 25 at 8 p.m. from 32nd Church of Christ, Scientist, Los Angeles. Richard P. Vernall, CS, the lecturer, is a member of the Christian Science board of lectureship. AFL Retail Clerks Come Up with New Money Proposal LOS ANGELES (UP)—The AFL retail clerks union has come up with a unique proposal for obtaining income for its members in excess of amounts allowable under wage controls. The union wants store owners to pay the difference between wage cellings and any greater amounts won in contract negotiations in government bonds to be held in trust for employees. The bonds could be cashed in only after the national emergency is over or when higher wage adjustments are permitted. Thus, the union holds, the over-celling income would not go into circulation and contribute to inflation. The proposal was outlined yesterday by Joseph T. De Silva, secretary of Local 770, which represents 13,000 food store employees in Los Angeles county. De Silva said he will present it today to O. G. Lawton, president of the Food Employers Council which represents more than 1000 large-stores contracting with the union. Remember Speed Kills! research may be necessary to learn all the facts and possibilities of channel 4, Los Angeles.
