George Vancouver, a distinguished English explorer, arrived in San Francisco on the first of three ships to California. He stayed in San Francisco for 12 days and then proceeded to Monterey where he remained until Jan. 14, 1793. In subsequent visits he studied California, and left two place names for posterity. It was he who named Pt. Fermin and Pt. Daume for several padre whom he admired. In 1798 he published a book in London of his voyage around the world. He was critical of the mission system but hardly as harsh as his French contemporary, La Perouse. LINES-O-TYPE—Salome Arian the personable cabbie, is a victim of tough luck. (AP)—A tornado destroyed nearly a third of southwestern Illinois town, cut the residents still could smile today at the wind's oddities. Not a single person was killed. Seven persons in the 800 population were injured, but only two seriously. The storm leaped from the southwest late yesterday and cut a 400-yard-wide scar across the center of the town. While the wind fashioned a disaster scene, it also played some strange tricks. The town fire engine, bright and unscratched, stood in its usual place on the ground floor of the fire house. But the fire house itself was gone, lifted away by the wind. A threshing combine, brand new and waiting for a buyer while resting on a lot behind the general store, was picked up and hurled against the side of a house 80 yards away. And Leslie C. VIGNETTE—A few weeks ago Moe Pitts, the Anaheim dawg fancier, loaded his prize-winning collies in his trailer and tossed a collection of trophies in the back seat of the old boiler and headed for the “Land of Opportunity”—Arkansas. Pitts’ destination was an 80-acre farm south of Little Rock. When he got there, his son Orman Pitts, shook his head and said: “I don’t like it dad.”... The former Army chaplain returned from Japan three weeks ago and will replace Father Michael Carlos who will take over the San Clemente church.
