Warriors Strong in Line with Speedy Reserves All Eager to Scalp Colonists Prospects seem very bright for a fifth straight Sunset League football championship for Fullerton's Indians, if they can power past Anaheim like they intend to do Friday night at their annual Homecoming game. In 1947 when the Braves captured their first title, they had to beat a powerful Santa Ana team headed by Johnny Fouch to win the title and they squeaked by 7-6. The following year they again had to defeat the again loaded Saints that year led by not end Donn Moomaw, and with Bob Ferguson carrying the brunt of the Indian attack, the Braves won 13-7. The next year, 1948, the team to beat for the title, in the case of Fullerton, was Newport Harbor led by Mel Smalley and fullback Bob Berry and they completely dominated that game to the tune of 42-27 for their third title to tie the mark Anaheim set back when they won three titles in a row in 1939, 1940 and 1911. Last year it was Newport Harbor who was supposed to be loaded and the team the Braves had to beat. They met the Sailors in the league opener and blanked them 33-0, but a surprise came up when the Colonists from Anaheim almost set the Braves back in their teepees. The final score was 19-12, the closest the Indians game to being knocked over last year. Advanced To CIF Finals But they continued on through the competition and advanced info Hudson. Tackle Up From Bees Left guard on offense and middle guard on defense is Jim Hammer who played on the Jayvees last year. Tackles for the Braves are Art Schade and Charles Daugherty. Schade was a first string tackle for the Bee's last year while Daugherty was more or less a reserve and really hadn't seen too much action before taking over on the first team this year. At ends are two returning lettermen, Larry Kraemer and Elvin Boyd and behind them fighting for position on the first unit are Leon Owens, Alvin Boyd and Don Kraemer. Last year Elvin Boyd was used mostly on offense while Owens played on defense, but this year Boyd has taken over both jobs. Easton Plays Center Center for the Warriors is Don Easton who played second string behind All-CIF first stringer Augie Brownfielder. Easton hardly got his suit dirty last year, but has made up for that this year, by playing practically the whole game. He is the team's center line-backer and is spelled by Stan Tallant, up from last year's Bees. In Fullerton they claim their second team backfield is faster than any of the league's first teamers and they could well be correct what with Lin Sitton, Gary Johnson, Steve Orton and Jimmy Fujino sprinting and speeding up and down the field. "I have always want an American tour," said der, 35-year-old com structor of World War Advanced To CIF Finals But they continued on through the competition and advanced into CIF finals. But that wasn't the end of their conquests, not by a long way. This year they have started out in better fashion than any of their other teams, unless it would be the 1948 team that wasn't defeated, but tied in the CIF playoffs by Chaffey, 7-7. However this year's team is rated a little better due to their all-around backfield and their well stocked bench of reserves, plus the added confidence a champion assumes after he has rolled up 24 straight league victories in dominating the rest of the league for four complete years. Playing on the line for the Warriors are some of the best players ever seen wearing the Red and White for several years and they are led by outstanding guard and right linebacker Jack Cartwright, only a junior. Cartwright is big, rough and fast and has been one of the reasons the opponents choose to run through the middle of the line instead of around the ends. On the other side backing up the line is the teams all-CIF fullback Don Roy Campanella Voted League's MVP Award NEW YORK CP—Roy Campanella will always remember 1951. Throughout the year the husky, hard-hitting catcher of the Brooklyn Dodgers was hampered by injuries, but now Campanella has reaped the fruits of his labor. He was named yesterday as the National League's Most Valuable Player for the past season by a 24-man committee of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Campanella is only the third catcher since 1931 to win the coveted award. The other receivers to gain the honor were Gabby Hartnett of the 1933 Chicago Cubs and Ernie Lombardi of the 1938 Cincinnati Reds. The 29-year-old Dodger star collected 243 points out of a possible 336 to win in a breeze. Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals, winning his fifth batting title with a .335 average, finished second with 191 points. Points were awarded on 14 for first place vote, nine for second and so on down to one for tenth. Campanella enjoyed a great season despite his series of injuries. In Fullerton they claim their second team backfield is faster than any of the league's first teamers and they could well be correct what with Lin Sitton, Gary Johnson, Steve Orton and Jimmy Fujino sprinting and speeding up and down the field. All are outstanding on the track. Sitton was undefeated in the Class Cee hurdles two years ago and ran Bee and varsity last year. He won the Bee low hurdle title last year. Orton is an 11-foot pole vaulter while Johnson can run the 100, 660 or 880 yard runs with the best in the league. Fujino is a sprinter and advanced to the CIF quarterfinals two years ago in the 100-yard dash. Here's how the Amea pair off for the two somes, in which player alternately. Marino is an 8-10 favorite to retain the 112-pound crown that he won here on a decision. The 15-round outdoor bout starts about 11:15 p.m. PST. Both boxers are confident and the ring railbirds are divided in their predictions of the winner. Marino has flashed the sterner punch in workouts. Allen has shown speed and a stinging left jab. Sad Sam Ichinose, the politician and Bon Vivant who manages Marino in between his duties as a Honolulu city-county supervisor, plans to send the little brown doll in for an early knockout. Prize Fighter in Quest of Laurels Against Golfers PINEHURST, N. C. "I think I can play in some of the west coast tournaments in February before I go to Australia and then come back and play in a few more. "I'd like to see what I can do in steady, topflight competition." Faulkner's immediate task is to try to help lift the Ryder cup from the Americans in the international test opening tomorrow with four foursome matches. Eight singles matches conclude the test Sunday. Here's how the Americans will pair off for the twoball four-somes, in which players hit balls alternately. Ben Hogan and Jim Demaret, Sam Snead and Lloyd Mangrum, Jack Burke and Clayton Heafner, Ed (Porky) Oliver and Henry Ransom. The British pairings haven't been announced. The Americans tore into the 7007-yard, par 72 course yesterday. Snead and Mangrum had a round of 68, playing two-ball four-some style. In another match, Demaret shot a 68 and Hogan a 69. Louis Arrives at Turn in Road NEW YORK (UP)—Joe Louis says he has come to "a turn in the road" but wants more time to think over his future plans. Louis issued a statement yesterday—apparently prompted by the Illinois Athletic Commission which said it would not permit him to fight in that state. The statement said nothing about retiring, a move which has been predicted freely since his knockout by Rocky Marciano last week. He repeated that he would make Charlie Dressen SAN ANTONIO (UP) — Jackie Robinson doesn't like that blast Birdie Tebbets put on Brooklyn Manager Chuck Dressen in the Erv Palica case. Dressen publicly charged Palica with being gutless. Tebbetts, Cleveland Indians catcher, criticized him for it. "Did Tebbetts ever play for Dressen?" asked Robinson, Brooklyn second baseman in San Antonio on a barnstorming tour. "Of course, Tebbetts didn't. If he had played for him, Tebbetts never would have talked like he did." Tebbetts said in Boston yesterday, "We all were glad when Dressen blew the National League pennant in the playoff series with the New York Giants. Dressen showed lack of sympathy and understanding for his players as well as poor sportsmanship several times during the past season." Robinson declared that Dressen tried every other method to bring Palica back to his 1950 ability. "All our players knew Dressen was doing all he could to help Palica, and our players — who should know the inside dope — feel that Dressen was right. We like him. We thing Dressen is a good manager, and if you want to find out about a manager, go to his players, but don't take the word of an outsider." Bruins, Bears Unlimber for Clash Saturday LOS ANGELES (UP)—Coach Red Sanders will be back on the field this afternoon when the UCLA Bruins warm up for their final drill before Saturday's game with the California Bears. He'll be in a wheelchair, though, and one foot will be in a cast as a result of a minor operation Monday. Left tackle Jerry Fields injured his shoulder in yesterday's practice and will not play Saturday. Pacific Coast Suffering Due to Professional TV SAN FRANCISCO (UP) — Santa Clara and University of San Francisco officials heatedly criticized today the San Francisco 49ers decision to televise the 49er-Rams pro football game in Los Angeles Sunday. “It’s another spike in the coffin which may seal collegiate football’s doom on the Pacific Coast,” said USF Coach Joe Kuharich. The 49er-Rams game is at 2 p.m. coinciding with the annual “big little game” between Santa Clara and the USF Dons in San Francisco. The local game’s gate seems likely to suffer. Kuharich said the 49ers, in agreeing to lease television rights of the professional game, “are selling their very souls for a dollar.” “Professional football teams are red from the ranks of college football,” he added, “and just as sure as shooting they’re out to kill us off just the same.” Hallowe’en, although an ancient Christian festival, long antedates Christianity and is largely of a Druidical character. Cougars Primed; Set for Indians STANFORD (UP) — A Stanford assistant football coach, Dutch Fehring, says Washington State college will be the finest offensive team Stanford has faced this season. Fehring scouted WSC’s last three games in preparation for the undefeated Indians Saturday meeting with the Cougars here. Stanford Coach Chuck Taylor said two injured varsity players are fully recovered and will play. They are Bob Meyers, transferred from fullback to left halfback to make way for track star Bob Mathias, and defensive guard Jesse Cone. Cone suffered a bone injury in the UCLA game. Injury-Riddled Colonist Bee Team Host to Up and Coming Fullerton Truly the disappointment of the grid season has been the Anaheim High Bee football team showing in Sunset League competition. Last year they gained a tie with Santa Ana for the loop title and started out in fiery fashion by remaining undefeated after their first four games this year. They tied Redlands and Chaffey and emerged victorious over Citrus and Covina before opening their loop season against Santa Ana on the local field. They just didn't seem to have any scoring punch as they fell by a mere point to the rather hapless loolding Saints, 14-13. Start Spinning Nose Dive The following week the locals played host to Huntington Beach and again they didn't play up to the same level of ball they had displayed in their first four games. They fell to the Oilers, 13-6. Tomorrow the locals play host to Fullerton's Bee team that has won one and lost one—losing to Huntington in the first game of the season 12-0, but pounding the weak Sailors from Newport Harbor 25-7. Fullerton is led by several of the players who played on last year's championship Cee team that allowed only six points to be scored on them in the five league games. Those players are carrying on in much the same manner this year. Although they possess just a fair record, they nevertheless have a great defensive team. Comparing them now to the local Bee Herbel Will Be In Action Gayle Herbel injured himself in the Huntington Beach game as did Phil Wright, both from the backfield. Herbel will be back in action, but Wright might not see action for one or two weeks, if at all. Wright was one of the teams inspirational players as well as being a hard runner and driver through the line. He played quarterback and was deadly from the position running or passing. So with Stagner, Herbel, and Wright not feeling so well, although Herbel will be in action tomorrow, the team was left with only two top notch halfbacks—Bill Walker and Rudy Rivera. Rivera had his differences with head coach Sam Keith and one had to go so Rivera isn't with the team any longer and Walker is still favoring an injured neck. One Regular Left About the only regular or semi-regular left is Al Salaets, quarterback. He will be faced with a Herculean task tomorrow as he struggles to lead the Colonists to victory over Fullerton. The situation is in such poor condition that one shouldn't be too surprised to see some of the linemen running from the backfield positions. In other games around the league, Orange and Huntington Beach will be battling for sole first place in the league and the possible title. Both are undefended in league play and the game should be a real thriller. In the remaining TOKYO (UP) — American tennis star Hamilton Richardson departed by plane today for Australia to join the U.S. Davis Cup team. He just completed a Japanese exhibition tour. before a Walcott-Marciano bout could be signed and sealed. Actually, Charles is entitled to the first crack at Walcott's title in June, Bocchicchio admitted today, "under the terms of an agreement we made when Charles gave Walcott a crack at the title in Pittsburgh last July." For Health, Eat California Fruit! weak Sailors from Newport Harbor 25-7. Fullerton is led by several of the players who played on last year's championship Cee team that allowed only six points to be scored on them in the five league games. Those players are carrying on in much the same manner this year. Although they possess just a fair record, they nevertheless have a great defensive team. Comparing them now to the local Bee team during their brilliant days against Redlands, Chaffey and Citrus, the locals would rate at least a three touchdown favorite. But the locals are a far cry from that team and the odds could almost be reversed and be entirely in order. Several sad occurrences have hit the team and they alone account for the main reasons the team has taken such a nose dive. Jerry Stagner hurt himself in the Covina game, the Colonists fourth practice game, and upon the doctors orders will not be able to play anymore this season. He was the team's top worker and one of its best halfbacks. The situation is in such poor condition that one shouldn't be too surprised to see some of the linemen running from the backfield positions. In other games around the league, Orange and Huntington Beach will be battling for sole first place in the league and the possible title. Both are undefeated in league play and the game should be a real thriller. In the remaining contest Santa Ana goes up against Newport. Newport is sharing the cellar with Anaheim and both will be trying to leave there as soon as possible.
