For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die.—Rev. 3:2. Tonight's the night! Unless Jupiter Pluvious decides to use his little sprinkling can, 125,000 people will witness the 28th annual Hallowe'en Festival, but it won't be "the biggest Hallowe'en celebration in the world." Apparently Ernie Moeller, the Chamber of Commerce gear, hasn't heard of the Hagerstown, Md., Hallowe'en festivities which last year even outdid Anaheim's publicity-getting event. The Hagerstown people had Fulton Lewis, Jr., and other top-flight radio and newspaper commentators give its Hallowe'en festivities a nation-wide plug. Hagerstown has been at it for fifty years or so, t'boot. But, you can't blame Ernie for his enthusiasm. The Anaheim spook festival is the biggest and best west of Hagerstown. All-Year Club Top Booster of County's Riches What tourists like to see in Southern California has been determined accurately by a survey, and the results show that Orange county is fortunate, indeed. The county's attractions are near the top of the list. This is one reason why Orange county receives such a rich return in dollars spent here by the out-of-state visitors drawn to the Southland by the area's tourist advertising. This was reported by Don Thomas, managing-director of the All-Year club, to the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange county, meeting at the Imperial restaurant in Garden Grove last night. The head of the Southland's community tourist advertising organization—now in its 30th year of continual operation—explained why no other county of the area is "deeper in the tourist business than is Orange county." Climate Tops All "We have surveyed, again and again," he said, "'the things that attract the tourists to Southern California. And at the top of the list come: climate, Pacific ocean." The Hagerstown people had Fulton Lewis, Jr., and other top-flight radio and newspaper commentators give its Hallowe’en festivities a nation-wide plug. Hagerstown has been at it for fifty years or so, ‘tboot. But, you can’t blame Ernie for his enthusiasm. The Anaheim spook festival is the biggest and best west of Hagerstown. GRIPES—Get ready for the gripes that usually follow such an outstanding civic event as tonight’s parade. There were plenty gripes last year, and consequently this year’s program has been more streamlined to meet the public demand. COURTESY—There will be a lot of pushing and shoving for vantage points along the pea-ride route. People will want to see Leo Carillo, the California who will be grand marshal. Folks, too, will be eager to catch a glimpse of lovely Dianne Cash, Miss Slick Chick of 1951. Curb space will be at a premium as folks from all over Southern California drive to Anaheim to “take in” the dazzling spectacle. There will be some shoving and pushing. There will be some frayed tempers, too. But, let’s enter the thing in good spirit. WARNING—A word to the wise is never sufficient, but police reports tomorrow may show that there will have been several sharpies operating on the parade route. Watch your billfold and your pocketbook, folks. Pick-pockets like to work in crowds. CONGRATULATION—The biggest event of the Anaheim Hallowe’en Festival isn’t tonight’s parade. Neither is it the whiskerino, nor the costume ball. Those who saw the young Anaheimers diligently working last Saturday on the window art in the downtown district, know this feature is the feature of the festivities. Anything that is done for youngsters is something to be admired. Those kids worked hard to turn out their masterpieces. To single out any one would be beside the The head of the Southland’s community tourist advertising organization—now in its 30th year of continual operation—explained why no other county of the area is “deeper in the tourist business than is Orange county.” Climate Tops All “We have surveyed, again and again,” he said, “the things that attract the tourists to Southern California. And at the top of the list come: climate, Pacific ocean, orange trees, with various other attractions further down the list. “So with 40 miles of recreational coastline and the most orange trees of any county in the U.S.A., as well as plenty of our good, dry, subtropical climate, it is no wonder that Orange county is so deeply in the business of going after tourists’ dollars.” During the past year tourists spent nearly $400,000,000 in the Southland, Thomas said. These dollars, he said, constitute the second largest source of “new money” from out-of-state that the Southland has. Tourist income is exceeded only by money from aircraft manufacture, and is followed by oil, motion pictures, apparel, citrus, and furniture manufacture, he said. Building Up Winter Trade Thomas described how the All-Year-club in its advertising, literature and nation-wide publicity is building up all-winter tourist business for the coastal areas. “Few people swim in the ocean here in the winter, but that need make little difference in using the Pacific as a tourist attraction,” he explained. “We have found that these visitors from the inland area, who have never seen anything bigger than a lake, thrill at the sight of the Pacific. They are satisfied to enjoy the view from the bluffs, to explore the beaches and hunt for shells; go sailing, or catch a fish. “They’re just as happy doing this in winter as in summer. So we’re trying to keep as many tourists as possible flowing down your way during winter months. This can mean more dollars for Orange county.” Those who saw the young Anaheimers diligently working last Saturday on the window art in the downtown district, know this feature is the feature of the festivities. Anything that is done for youngsters is something to be admired. Those kids worked hard to turn out their masterpieces. To single out any one would be beside the point. Some drawings are better than others, of course, but every last one of the boys and girls who worked so hard to decorate his window deserves a pat on the back. Kids of Anaheim, the old Gazetteer salutes you. You have courage, vision and imagination. What some of you lack in artistic talent, you more than make up for it with enthusiasm. Anaheimers can be proud of Anahelm youth—the kids of today are the leaders of tomorrow. They are a symbol of tomorrow's America—strong, aggressive, individualistic. Yes, Anaheim can be proud of its youth. NITECAPSULE—Yes, a girl is getting old when she stays home and dreams of her YES-terdays. TAIPEH, Formosa (UP)—The Communist New China News agency said today Gen. Chen Keng, acting commander of the Chinese Reds' Second Field Army, is on active duty in Korea. WASHINGTON (UP)—American gift packages were reported today to be piling high in Czechoslovakian postoffices because the Czech Communist government has imposed stiff taxes on gift items.
