Anaheim Gazette TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1961 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Six Anaheimers To Leave on Training Cruise Six men from Anaheim will be among the 78 Reservists helping to man the USS Weeden when the destroyer puts to sea from Long Beach, Nov. 7, for a 2-day training cruise to Santa Barbara and return. The cruise is being operated for personnel of the Organized Surface Division 11-28, stationed at the Santa Ana Lighter-Than-Air Base. K. J. Mahoney will be on duty, in the radio and radar shack, getting additional training in his field of electronics. O. W. Wenholz and W. Weyand, firemen, will get extra training in the engine room of the Weeden. Three seamen—R. C. Gregg, J. J. Stehley and J. F. Stehley—will have heir first sea duty. Lt. G. E. Eustes will serve as operations officer for the cruise. Assigned Duty The Reserve Division, skippered by Lt. Hal G. Polley of Placentia and Newport, will take over specifically assigned shipboard duties commensurate with the training received during weekly drills of the unit. For example, electronics men will be in the radio and radar shack, and firemen and engineers will be in the engine room. Seamen recruits will be so allocated as to serve the best interests of the cruise and at the same time to give the recruits themselves a maximum of basic training board procedure. At sea the reservists will regular watches as men in regular Navy stand. They willicipate in routine shipboard such as fire drill, disaster or abandon ship drill. Live Ammo Practice When the destroyer readies operating and gunnery and servists will have practice aircraft warfare, using lifmition in 20mm and 40mm with balloons as targets. They also practice simulated firing the 3-inch main battery. The reservists aboard the Weeden go "regular Navy" in a sense during the two days are stationed on the Weedda. The ship will anchor in Barbara harbor for the night around 1700, seventy new "salted" sailors will go ask their navy blues for night after the hours of liberty been termined by regular Navy arms—midnight for seame later for rated men landed.
