Have you ever wondered from whence came our many beautiful bulb flowers? A few notes on the subject may not help you to grow the bulbs any better, but it adds to the interest of your garden to know from what far lands your flowers came.
The common tulip came from Asia, but its wild ancestors are unknown. We know there are many species of tulips in Siberia, Turkey, Asia Minor, China, Japan, and some of the Mediterranean countries, but what species or several species gave rise to the garden tulip in its many forms and colors, is unknown. We do know that the forms that gave rise to the Dutch bulb industry and started the famous craze known as the Tullpomania, came from Turkey. The history of the tulip since that introduction is one of the epics of the flower sia refracta, variety alba,

industry, much too long to give here, but well worth looking into.
The trumpet daffodils are native of England, Sweden, and northern Europe to Spain and Austria. Narcissus tazetta, the Polyanthus Narcissus, with small corona (cup) and broad leaves, is a variable species from the Canary Islands to Chima and Japan. Narcissus poeticus, which has the red-margined corona, is found growing wild in the Mediterranean region.
The so-called Dutch Hyacinth, which is a botanical variety of the Dutch, has smaller, more slender flowers, not so crowded on the stalk.
The popular Spanish Iris really grows wild in Spain, but also in North Africa. The English Iris came from the French and Spanish Pyranees mountains, and the Dutch Iris is merely a variety of this latter species.
Freesias as we know them originated from two or three South African species, with the result that the number and variety of colors have been increased. Freecia refracta, variety alba, is a fine white which has been improved by selection.
Sparaxis, tricolor, sometimes called Mexican Freesia, is also South African, is closely related to the true Freesia, is also South African, is closely related to the true Freesias.
Our garden Crocus comes from a few southern European species.
COMMUNIST GOAL
SRINAGAR, Kashmir (P)—The Communist regime in West China's Sinkiang province announced in an official broadcast here that all anti-red forces in the area would be "totally liquidated" by the end of 1951.
"When we have cleared the country of the enemies," declared Sinkiang commanding General Wang Chin, "the new government can proceed with a program of land reforms."

The only sure way to beat the high rent problem is to build a home of your own.
That is the conclusion reached by Mr. and Mrs. William A. Lolitz after 10 years of living in rented places and the solution to their particular problem is shown in the accompanying pictures. With the help of two sons who had previously built homes of their own, Mr. and Mrs. Lolitz started construction of their own "dream house" last November.
We would like to underline the Mr. and Mrs. because with Lolitz employed full time on a split shift as caretaker at the City hall, much of the work necessarily fell to his wife. It was she who personally laid two-thirds of the flooring, who enrolled in Anaheim high school's workshop to build the bathroom cabinets, and who is now doing all the interior painting.
"I have always wanted to build something," said Mrs. Lolitz as we snapped her picture the other morning, "and how that my family is grown, I am finally getting around to it."
Living in Guest House
A small guest house stands on the building site that Mr. and Mrs. Loitz have choosen, a choice corner lot at 817 S. Claudina st., and living while building is in progress.
Their new home will have all the features they have so sorely missed in rented places. It is roomy—1250 square feet—with plenty of closet space in bedrooms and kitchen, and not one but TWO linen closets in the hall.
The living-dining area is one big room with large windows that leave well arranged wall space for furniture groupings. Set into the common wall between kitchen and dinette is a revolving television screen that can be viewed from either living room or kitchen. Glass brick in this same wall provides a pleasing decorative effect and still more light.
When the house is completed, Mrs. Loitz plans to catch up on her sewing and has her eye on a cosy little all-purpose room set aside for that purpose. Case-ment windows provide needed light for close-up; the room will be especially because of a warm red-formed by the back of place, and the remaining etched plywood panels drift wood green.
Attached Garage
The garage is attached house in such a way entrance leads into room, and a two-way filled from the garage for the fireplace in room.
This big, two car hobby space, preserve access to an attic over proper. Thanks to this Loitz family will at last age space for camping.
As is characteristic owners, Mr. and Mrs. anxious to move in. Sign a brand new electric ready and waiting in to cook Thanksgiving cakes.
Will they make it b giving? At the rate we Loitz weilding that pay we think they will.

WASHINGTON (P)—Senator Nixon (R-Calif.) called today for a full-scale inquiry and public hearings to bring out all the facts about any government loan activities of Mrs. Flo Bratten and Charles D. Shaver.

Shaver has said that Mrs. Bratten, secretary to Vice President Barkley, joined him in making visits to officials of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to ask about more than a million dollars in federal loans.

The army spokesman said a veteran for these purposes is a man who served 12 months or more on active duty between Pearl Harbor and Sept. 2, 1945.
He said all enlistments which expired before June 30, 1952, have been extended 12 months from date of expiration but no man's enlistment may be extended more than once unless he consents.
