Nevada Due for Large A-Bomb Blast Thursday
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UP) — The Atomic Energy commission scheduled TNT explosions for today at its Nevada proving grounds, preliminary to testing another of the nation's new nuclear weapons.
Taking an unusual step for a non-atomic blast, the AEC asked the Civil Aeronautics administration to warn all planes away from the area between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. (PST).
The CAA warning also ordered aircraft to avoid the altitudes of 11,000 and 14,000 feet between Las Vegas and Albuquerque, N.M. The CAA said that planes move eastward on odd thousands and westward on even, indicating that perhaps some sort of shuttle or round-trip movement of planes between the two cities was involved in the AEC operation.
There was to be no atomic explosion today, the AEC said.
The warning to the CAA led to speculation that some of the AEC's own B-29s were involved in the "dry run," perhaps dropping conventional type bombs.
Thus the second atomic blast in the current test series may come as a bomb drop. The first, a low grade explosion last Monday, was from atop a 100-foot tower.
The "dry" or non-nuclear run, the AEC said, is important to scientists who must calibrate in-
Converted Hindu Speaks at Meeting
The Men's Brotherhood of the Christian church met last night in the church dining hall with Jack Leigh, Brotherhood president, presiding. Speaker was Paul V. Gupta, converted high-caste Hindu who has been in this country for the past two years making final preparations to establish the Hindustan Bible institute in his native land.
Invocation was given by W. G Manion with community singing in charge of George Alden and Marshall McFie. Gerald Baker was elected to fill the unexpired term of vice-president. Flute solos were presented by Paul Beatty. Dinner was served by Circ Three of the Women's Council under the direction of Mrs. P. V Dominguez, Mrs. T. G. Cunningham, and Mrs. J. E. Wilbern.
The United States owns more than a dozen small Caribbean islands, mostly uninhabited, which were originally acquired for their supplies of guano fertilizer.
Sound and shock waves before getting into the atomic experiments.
A similar dry run was held just prior to the series of spectacular blasts at the test site last winter. Those blasts broke windows in Las Vegas. The Monday detonation was neither seen nor heard in Las Vegas, but an AEC spokesman told newsmen yesterday that the second test, which may come tomorrow, will be bigger.
