Arthur McFadden Urges Annexation To Metropolitan
Lakes of Orange county, and all Southern California have become "lakes of memory", it was emphasized yesterday by Arthur J. McFadden, of Santa Ana, national agricultural leader, in urging annexation of the Orange County Municipal Water district to the Metropolitan Water district at next Tuesday's election.
Annexation to MWD would give Orange county territory rights to more than 107,000 acres feet of water annually from the Colorado river. McFadden pointed out. That, he said, not only would replenish the depleted underground basin but would keep pace with increasing water needs of the future.
The virtual disappearance of Southern California's once popular lakes, such as Big Bear, Lake Elsinore, Lake Henshaw, Lake Hodges and the rest, is testimony that this region is in a critical way for water, declared McFadden.
Irvine lake, back of Santiago reservoir, is virtually exhausted for the first time since the big dam was built, and unless plentiful rainfall is received this winter, the acreage irrigated by water from Irvine lake has no choice but to seek water elsewhere. The only place they can find it is the Colorado river, he said.
McFadden, who is president of the National Council of Farm Cooperatives, and chairman of the state board of agriculture, is heading the publicity committee work-
G.I. ACCIDENTS IN GERMANY IRK GENERATE
FRANKFURT, Germany: Violent deaths at the rate every 48 hours, plus many injuries hit the ranks of Army troops in Germany.
In one day alone, 11 soldiers were killed in accidents, but Army has gone into prevention. A two-star general, sizzling mad by so many accidents in his division, "gred" all of his vehicles for hours—while drivers attend fresher classes.
Highway mishaps take the greatest toll. In a six-month period 52 soldiers lost their lives wrecks. Many of them died in autobahns—Germany's super ways. Others died in trail lions, plane crashes, exploding poisonings and by firearms.

to MWD next Tuesday.
"As one of the older native Orange county, I am particularly sensitive of the need of getting rest of the county's area," he said. "On the sit-all-the old swimming holes we were kept full of water by new springs when I was a boy, now more than a hundred down to water."
"The same drop has taken in the wells on the ranches I had in charge during the last years. We must take this."
