The neighboring city daily is now publishing Mondays through Fridays. Publisher Ranald A. Fairbairn, in making the announcement of the change, said "the Orange Daily News will not increase its subscription price at this time as has been done by other newspapers but as an alternative will discontinue the Saturday edition." "Sharply increased costs in all phases of newspaper operations," Mr. Fairbarn said, "force us either to increase our price to readers or put into effect certain economies which we believe, will not detract materially from the value of the News as a good, locally edited newspaper. Gathering and publishing news is an expensive business. Among the smaller dailies, such as the News, the trend, of necessity, has been to a five-day week." Mr. Fairbairn pointed out that "advertising remains the chief source of revenue to the newspaper. Advertisers, as a rule, do not use Saturday newspapers because they are not open for business the next day." "Since 1943," the Orange publisher stated, "every element of it is no longer necessary." County Permits Exceed $500,000 Building permits for the unincorporated area of Orange county soared over the half-million mark again for the past week, aggregating $537,735 in value, with Anaheim district ranking third among the unincorporated areas. The Anaheim total was $54,469. Records of the county building department showed that Garder Grove area had $149,112 in permits, Costa Mesa $99,204, Anaheim being third with $54,469 followed by Tustin with $38,252, Brea $28,100, Fullerton $26,500 and Orange $26,000. Other totals: Stanton $14,414, Yorba Linda $13,970, Buena Park $13,190, Westminster $12,648, South Laguna $11,736, Huntington Beach $10,480, Capistrano Beach $9000, Midway City $8990, Cypress $5680, Placentia $5000, La Habra $3072, Laguna Beach $2600, Ocean View $1970, Talbert $1188 and Los Alamitos $1080. Permits were issued as follows in the Anaheim area: R. E. Busche, residence, 6832 Euclid, $19,445; Mrs. E. Williams, residence, 13752 Santa Ana st., $12,000; William M. Clow, residence, 13011 Simmons ave., $11,-560; Ernest F. Zimmer, swimming pool, 10152 Brookhurst, $2600; John Losleben, residence, 8331 S. Euclid, $8864; miscellaneous $1000. To maintain a competent staff and also to give employees an adequate compensation... EUREKA! HERE ITS SCORCH! NOW WHO GETS ARRESTED? Mr. Fairbairn pointed out that "advertising remains the chief source of revenue to the newspaper. Advertisers, as a rule, do not use Saturday newspapers because they are not open for business the next day." "Since 1943," the Orange publisher stated, "every element of cost in the operation of the News has more than doubled: Newsprint has gone from $50 per ton to $116. To maintain a competent staff and also to give employees an adequate compensation, salaries likewise have more than doubled." SLICE OF HAM "HE SAYS IT MAKES THE HIKE SEEM MORE LIKE FUN!"
