MORRIS 10-2 "I HAD A SWELL VACATION—TENNIS, SWIM, FISH, OR ANYTHING" Anaheim Gazette TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Governors to Discuss Real Problems Of Inflation, Taxation and Reds GATLINBURG, Tenn. OP—Gov. J. Bracken Lee, Utah Republican, today challenged the nation's governors to discuss the "real problems" of inflation, taxation and communism instead of what he called "side issues" like Social Security. Lee spoke at a Social Security panel being conducted by Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, New York Republican. He demanded that the 43rd annual governors' conference pass resolutions on integrity in government and the conduct of the Korean war, as well as other matters. Lee threatened to walk out on the conference but didn't when his remarks brought applause from some southern Democrats and a scattering of Republicans. Complaining that the conference program was strait-jacketed, Lee said that all he learned was "nothing" from discussions yesterday in which Gen. George C. Marshall, Defense Mobilizer Charles E. Wilson and Millard Caldwell, the civilian defense administrator, participated. Dewey for Eisenhower A drive headed by Gov. Dewey to enlist westerners in a draft-Eisenhower campaign was under way here today. Meanwhile, Dewey was scheduled to preside at a round-table discussion today on Social Security and welfare at which Oscar R. Ewing, Federal Security Administrator, was listed as a speaker. Dewey and Ewing have not with efforts to enlist as western Republican governors possible in a campaign to land Dwight D. Eisenhower as the Republican presidential nominee. Eisenhower's principal now lies in the east—York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Dulles Has 100 Per Cent John Foster Dulles, Republican State Department advised the governors at their annual dinner last night that P. Truman, Secretary of State son and Gen. George C. McMullen former Secretary of Defense given him "100 per cent in his task of drafting the anese peace treaty. He said Dewey, Senate (R-Ohio), a potential 1952 presidential candidate, andator Millikin (R Colo.) had the conference of GOP Senators helped establish "unity" in this endeavor. Dulles said Mr. Truman had advisers had had to calculate risk of war with Russia and China in going ahead with signing of the treaty in San Francisco last month.
