by JOHN S. NEUBAUER
WEATHERWISE — Brilliant flashes of lightning coupled with booming, rumbling thunderclaps featured a surprise storm that brought .33 of an inch of rain to Anaheim. That ended the heat wave.
NEWSLINES — Shortages were cited by Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. officials as the reason Orange County doesn't have extended telephone service. Cost for providing such a service by the 12 PT&T exchanges would be $1,567,000. Approximately one fifth of those classified 4-1 in Orange county will be called to the colors. Mrs. Stella Crawley, draft board coordinator, was unable to estimate the number of men this new edict would affect. Constable Haskell Kelly urged the board of supervisors to grant township officials a pay hike. William D. (Bill) Tremaine, 85, former Brea Township constable, died at Yucalpa.
Cpl. C. E. McKnight Wounded in Action
Cpl. Charles E. McKnight, husband of Mrs. Willa McKnight of 730-B N. Lemon st., was wounded in action in Korea Sept. 9. He was wounded by shrapnel which struck his left shoulder. Mrs. McKnight has heard from her husband since then, and he reports that the injury is slight and he is doing fine.
NEW HUMP FOR REA
WASHINGTON (P) — The Rural Electrification Administration thinks it is over one hump, but expects another shortly. It thinks the peak has been reached in the installation of new lines. Last fiscal year 117,000 miles were put into use. This was a drop of 35 per cent from the previous year.
The new hump is expected in the amount of power delivered to existing lines. It is explained that most farms are now on power lines. But in many cases, farms on the lines do not yet have a full quota of appliances. The amount of power delivered took a 25 per cent jump last year and has doubled since 1948.
PRIMITIVE TRIBE FOUND
DARWIN (P) — A completely walled-in village inhabited by primitive tribesmen, who had never seen a white man before, has terms and conditions of sale; Cash in lawful money of the United States of America, or upon credit, or for part cash and part credit as said Administratrix may seem on the vantage of beneficent and best interest of said estate at least ten per cent of

Constable Haskell Kelly urged the board of supervisors to grant township officials a pay hike. William D. (Bill) Tremaine, 85, former Brea Township constable, died at Yucaipa.
91, 92, 93, HOW MANY MORE—Gerald Sandilands, 71-year-old Anaheim citrus packing pioneer; Albert Cubb, a Marine, and Mrs. Cuca Garcia, 42, added their names to Orange county's growing traffic fatality list last week.
COURTOPIX—Five defendants pleaded guilty to felonies when arraigned before Judge Kenneth E. Morrison last week. Charges ranged from burglary to the possession of marijuana. Robert D. Moore, 38-year-old Santa Ana building contractor, was granted probation for five years in connection with the injury of Mrs. Katherine Burke March 12 South of Anaheim on 101 hwy.
SPORTOPIX — John Tyne's Placentians downed Mater Dei, 39-0 at La Palma Park last Friday. Chaffey dumped Anaheim, 23-6. Fullerton beat Whittier, 19-6. Orange beat Oceanside, while Ed Goddard's Huntington Beach Oilers walked over Riverside 19-6. LACC downed Tex Oliver's Fullerton Hornets, 20-6.
STATISTICALLY — The Stork did a lot of business with Anaheimers last week. Ten births—six boys and four girls. Jack Sutter, Charles Coronado, James Carter, Donald Olson, Kenneth Dorn and Richard Reynolds became the proud fathers of baby boys, Roy and Marian Luther became the parents of a baby girl. He's a telephone man... L. J. and Edith Downey also have a new daughter. Papa is with Safeway stores... J. Robert and Claudia Coffin have a daughter. They own the Orange County Petroleum Co... Agnes Cook presented her hubby, Doug Cook, with a new daughter.

PRIMITIVE TRIBE FOUND
DARWIN (P) — A completely walled-in village inhabited by primitive tribesmen, who had never seen a white man before, has been discovered by a Dutch patrol deep in the Dutch New Guinea jungle.
The story of the discovery was told by the Chief Justice of New Guinea, Dr. Bernard Damen, who visited Darwin recently. Dr. Damen said the village had been built into a fortress against hostile tribesmen, and the patrolmen had to crawl singly through a small hole in the wall.
The astonished tribesmen advanced on them in a threatening manner with spears and bows and arrows. Patrol-leader Den Haam calmed the villagers by singing them some native peace songs, and then won their confidence by giving them presents.
CULTURAL HOPES FOR SINGAPORE
SINGAPORE (P) — Malcolm MacDonald, British Commissioner-General for Southeast Asia, says he hopes Singapore will become one of the world's great cultural centers.
Praising Indian and other foreign artists who have given performances here, MacDonald said in a speech at Victoria Theatre: "Singapore is a cross-roads where several civilizations meet. Here, the culture of Europe and India, China and Malaysia all mingle and mix."
"That is one reason why we hope, in due time, to make this city much more than the valuable and famous commercial center which it is today."
