For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation. — Matt. 26:41. CALIFORNIANA—In September 1916 W. F. Alder demonstrated his invention for talking motion pictures to a group of Hollywood motion picture executives. He was the first to record sound on film utilizing the synchronized sound track used today. LINES-O-TYPE—Charles Pollard, the California Highway Patrol safety man, has a hobby of restoring ancient motorcycles. He has a 1915 cycle that is the pride of the ancient jallopy fraternity. So, the Continental Oil Company plans to abandon its Anaheim Community lease well. Raymond Holt, Anaheim’s leading historian, is still at it. He’s making service club speeches, but he isn’t digging up as much history as he did before becoming head librarian at Pomona. ABOUT TIME—Cecil Marks of the Farm Bureau is spearheading the drive to give Orange GOP Senators Wonder About Atomic Arming WASHINGTON (P)—Senators Bridges (R-NH), and Ferguson, (R-Mich) called on military leaders today to tell Congress whether all-out atomic arming of U. S. defense forces is feasible. The two Republicans, members of the Senate Appropriations committee, said in separate interviews that lawmakers ought to know if it is possible to cut defense costs by $30,000,000,000 yearly by substituting atomic for conventional weapons. Senator McMahon (D-Conn) told the Senate yesterday such a saving would be possible. He urged that the Army, Navy and Air Force be armed primarily with atomic weapons. He said the cheap, mass-production of a-bombs could become a reality in three years, if a start were made now. Asserting that it would be possible to get the unit cost of a bomb down to what the country now pays for a tank—some $240,000—McMahon added: "It is apparent now to all of us that there is a supply of raw materials coming into being with which we can fabricate atom bombs by the thousands." Walter Knott Wins Toaster Trophy Speaking on the subject "Freedom," Walter Knott won the Toastmaster’s Trophy at Monday night’s regular dinner meeting of the Anaheim club. His talk centered on the growing dependency of people on government in preference to attempting to solve their own problems. Toastmaster Marcus Gartner introduced the speakers who were, in addition to Knott, Earl Jordan on "We Are Losing Our Freedom." Aubrey Van Verst, "A Place to Go," a talk on the advantages of Santa Ana Canyon as a picnic site, and Dr. Kenneth Heuler discussing football under the title "It Is That Season Again." R. J. Allen conducted the Table Topic, a round table discussion on the various phases of Toastmastering. A program of inter-club visits and exchange of speakers will be started this week under the guidance of Dr. Heuler, Louis Taylor, Joseph Ersek, and Ed Wright will visit and participate in the program at Huntington Beach. Later the Anaheim club will be host to other representatives from the local area clubs. The Invocation was given by Ray Damerell, Royal Martin was Evaluator, and the meeting was under the chairmanship of Louis Taylor, president. It was held at ABOUT TIME—Cecil Marks of the Farm Bureau is spearheading the drive to give Orange county telephone subscribers extended phone service. State Pub-Utilities Commission will hold hearings on the matter Sept. 27. Walter Chaffee, Fullerton city attorney, recently appeared before the commission, protesting the phone company's request for a rate increase. The company has gotten four or five rate increases since V-J Day, but its services haven't been noticeably improved. SCHOOL NOTES—Junior college registration has dropped off while high school and elementary schools have picked up. The three county junior college first week enrollment figures: De1951 1950 crease Fullerton ... 921 1152 231 Orange Coast 600 672 72 Santa Ana ... 500 702 102 HIGH SCHOOLS — Anaheim, like other Orange county high schools showed an increase in first-week enrollment figures. A tabulation of five representative Orange County high schools reveals: In1951 1950 crease ANAHEIM ... 1231 1130 107 Brea-Olinda 200 183 17 Fullerton ... 1547 1370 177 Garden Grove 597 540 57 Santa Ana ... 1205 1193 12 Santa Ana has two junior high schools. Both Fullerton and Anaheim-board of trustees are considering the building of junior highs as an answer to the increased enrollment present elementary school daily average attendance figures predict for the future. PARAGRAPHING—James Roy Smith, the Fullerton jaysee swim coach, still hits the silk. He's a reserve officer who tests navy duction of a bombs could become a reality in three years, if a start were made now. Asserting that it would be possible to get the unit cost of a bomb down to what the country now pays for a tank—some $240,000—McMahon added: "It is apparent now to all of us that there is a supply of raw materials coming into being with which we can fabricate atom bombs by the thousands." McMahon, who heads the Senate-House Atomic committee, didn't go into detail, but Rep. Durham (D-NC), vice chairman of the group, told a reporter thorium is a substance "we can use to fall back upon if we have to go into an all-out atomic program." Ferguson said that McMahon's suggestion for substituting atomic for other weapons is something the joint chiefs of staff should talk to Congress about. Benton Thinks That McCarthy Is Worried WASHINGTON (P) — Senator Benton (D-Conn) said today he thinks Senator McCarthy (R-Wis) is "worried" about the outcome of Benton's move to oust McCarthy from the Senate. Benton made the comment to a reporter after McCarthy had suggested the withdrawal of Senator Hennings. (D-Mo) from a rules subcommittee which may take up Benton's resolution. Chairman Gillette (D-Iowa) called the subcommittee together today (9 a.m., EST) to decide whether to hold hearings on the resolution proposing that the Senate look into the question of expelling McCarthy. A two-thirds vote is needed to unseat a Senator. McCarthy, a member of the Full Rules committee, told a reporter he doesn't expect to appear personally before the group to push his demand that he be given the right to cross-examine witnesses. Four Injured in County Accidents Two mothers and their two children were injured Monday in two Orange county traffic accidents. Mrs. Hirlanda Fernandez, 39, Santa Ana, and her son, Arthur, 3, were hurt when Mrs. Fernandez, turning to look at her son, swerved her car off the pavement and struck a power pole on S. Bristol st., Santa Ana. Both were taken to St. Joseph hospital in Orange, the boy with a broken arm, his mother having a scalp wound. Mrs. Guinivere Morgan, 38, and her daughter, Valerie Morgan, 17, cf Huntington Beach, received minor injuries on Hwy. 39 at Huntington Beach when a car driven by Mrs. Morgan struck the rear of a car driven by Dale Crook, 23, of Whittier. Crook had stopped his car for a school bus. MRS. EMMA BEERMAN Mrs. Emma Beerman, 86, died Tuesday at Anaheim hospital She was born in Germany, and had lived 12 of the 60 years in the United States, in Anaheim. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran church. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars Friday at 2 p.m. Rev E. H. Pflug will officiate. Interment will be in Anaheim cemetery. To Make Your Contribution CONTACT ANAHEIM COMMUNITY CHEST 139 N. LOS ANGELES ST. Telephone Anaheim 7974 PARAGRAPHING—James Roy Smith, the Fullerton jaysee swim coach, still hits the silk. He's a reserve officer who tests navy parachutes in his spare time. Herb Grimm has one of the Southland's best-equipt chicken ranches. Years ago he used to peddle an Ellay morning newspaper. Lee Hansen, the Anaheim photographer, really had a wonderful experience on Colonel John D. Craig's expedition to Baja California. That's how Burton Holmes got started. Bill Hadler, the baker, will soon have new neighbors on Orangethorpe — that Northrop plant is really going up. Dave Lashmet, a former Anaheimer, is going to put on a big barbacue—for the Fullerton Fall Festival, that is. Which reminds one that Bill Cook's bands will probably be the best stepping musical organizations represented in that Oct. 4 event. George Jeffreys, the personable telephone man, was one of the country's best waterpolo players until he was forced to give up his pastime on doctor's orders. Incidentally, that little Anaheimer, Hank Chapman, is turning out top-notch aquatic teams in the Lone Star State. NITECAPEULE — The future never looks bright to anyone but McCarthy, a member of the Full Rules committee, told a reporter he doesn't expect to appear personally before the group to push his demand that he be given the right to cross-examine witnesses. The Wisconsin Senator wrote Hennings yesterday questioning whether he should disqualify himself because, in part, his St. Louis law firm represents the St. Louis Rost-Dispatch which McCarthy said has "vigorously condemned the conviction of the 11 communist leaders." The Post-Dispatch had no comment. McCarthy said also that one of Hennings' law partners, John Raeburn Green, is representing John Gates, editor of the Daily Worker, communist newspaper, and one of the party leaders convicted of conspiracy to advocate forcible overthrow of the government. Gates' appeal is pending before the Supreme Court. Hennings' office said in his absence from the city that Green had written he was appealing Gates' case, without fee, because it involved the issue of freedom of speech. Green's letter said he had no sympathy with the communists. If You Drivel Don't Drink the very young, because they have nothing to lose.
