HUMPHREY READY TO FIGHT FOR Senate's Increased Tax Bill
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senator Humphrey (D-Minn.) said today he and other Senators will fight to raise the Senate's tax increase bill to at least $7,000,000,000 annual level.
The Senate Finance committee late yesterday formally reported a measure which Chairman George (D-Ga.) said should bring in about $8,000,000,000 of new taxes in a full year of operation.
Floor debate on the measure—one of the last must bills to come before the Senate before adjournment—may begin late today.
Beginning tomorrow, Democratic leader McFarland of Arizona plans to start sessions two hours earlier than usual (9 a.m. EST) in an effort to get the bill through speedily.
Humphrey told a reporter he and his associates, including Senators Douglas (D-Ill) and Lehman (D-Lib-NY), feel at least $7,000,000,000 in new revenue will be needed for a balanced budget in the fiscal year which began July 1.
For this reason, he said, the group will sponsor amendments to restore cuts made by the Finance committee in the $7,200,000,000 tax boosting bill passed by the House. President Truman asked for $10,000,000,000.
George told newsmen he expected amendments such as those planned by the Humphrey group.
“It’s all right with me if anyone wants to offer amendments to take more money out of the pockets of the American people,” the veteran chairman comms not going to do it.

Hayworth Child In Need of Police
LOS ANGELES UP—Rita Hayworth, alarmed by anonymous kidnap threats, has hired detectives to guard her 19-month-old daughter Yasmin, it was reported today.
The child's father is Moslem Prince Aly Khan, whom Miss Hayworth is in Reno to divorce.
The report said in a story last night that the actress' Hollywood friends ascribe the threats to the fact that she is seeking a large financial settlement for Yasmin.
The guards were said to be hand picked men who are never out of sight of the girl. Also being closely watched is Rita's other daughter, Rebecca, born of her previous marriage to actor Orson Welles.
The actress' friends in Paris say she has written them that she is in constant dread of a possible kidnapping.
Miss Hayworth returned to this country from Europe last April and three weeks later announced she had separated from Prince Aly. They were married in 1949.
