CALIFORNIANA — Pio Picco last Mexican governor of California, died in Los Angeles Sept. 11, 1894. He was born at the Mission San Gabriel May 5, 1801. He became acting governor Feb. 22, 1845, and governor on April 18, 1846. He fled from Los Angeles in August, 1846, when U.S. forces under Comm. Robert E. Stockton and Maj. John C. Fremont seized the city, then capital of California. ANAHEIMIMITEM — Major Max Von Stroble, one of the most colorful men in Anaheim history, was perhaps the first man to drill for oil in Orange county. Von Stroble came to Anaheim to make wine. He had been a soldier in the German Revolution of 1848 and had an adventurous life. In 1867, at the end of California's first oil boom (1885-1867) Von Stroble saw the possibilities VA to Reduce Size of Staff Loss of 160 employee positions, of which 100 are presently occupied; is forecast at the Los Angeles Regional office of the Veterans Administration by L.C. Chapman, office manager; as a result of the reduction in force just ordered by VA Central office in Washington, D.C. Notices of separation went out to employees Sept. 10, effective Oct. 10; Chapman said. Present position ceiling at the office is 1580. VA officials in Washington stated that about 5000 employees will be lost nationally. Calif. Gear Co. Stock Issue OK'd Authorization to sell 5000 shares of stock in the California Gear Co., 1112 N. Lemon st., Anaheim, has been issued by Edwin M. Daugherty, state corporation commissioner. The first is engaged in manufacturing years, and is capitalized at $100,000 with 10,000 shares of stock at $10 par. Directors are Allen Arval Morris, Bernhard N. Palm and Gilbert J. Wittman. In 1867, at the end of California's first oil boom (1865-1867) Von Stroble saw the possibilities of an oil field in Brea. FIRST OIL WELL—The first actual oil well to be drilled in California was put down in 1861 on the Davis Ranch in Humbolt county. Prior to that, there had been hand-dug oil pits such as the 4x6 wild cat hole Edward L. Doheny dug with a pick and shovel on a lot just west of downtown Los Angeles. At 460 feet, he dipped up four barrels of oil a day. HISTORY—In Von Stroble's day, the method of punching a hole in the ground hadn't changed much since the Chinese first hit on the spring-hole method for drilling their salt wells. The springhole was simple and cheap and it got California oil pioneers off to a good start. Since it cost $300 on the average to sink an oil well, the profits were high. Running expenses of a well was $15 a month. An ordinary well produced four barrels a day—or 120 barrels a month, worth $125. That left $110 a month from the original $300 investment. EASY MONEY—To Von Stroble, it looked like an easy road to riches. All that it took, it seemed, was a site for a well, a long spring pole, and a couple of crudе hand-made pits together with a stout back and a stronger pair of legs. The spring pole was suspended above the hole. The driller stepped on the treadle which sent the bit banging down. When he got off it released the pole and yanked the bit up again. Sinking a shallow well was cheap and fast in fields where oil was close to the surface. FAILURE—Von Stroble's oil adventure in Brea was doomed to failure. Ironically, though, Von Stroble picked out a site that later was one of the richest oil producing centers in California. Von Stroble wasn't the only old timer to have his dream of easy riches shattered. Col. E. D. Baker, for example, spent thousands of dollars drilling for oil along what has become Los Angeles' Miracle Mile shopping center. First wildcat drilling ventures for oil in Santa Fe Springs in 1907 were doomed to disappointment as their drilling methods could not penetrate the rock layer 350 feet down. In 1919, however, with the improved rotary rig, Santa Fe Springs became a rich bonanza at 4,596 feet. The discovery well — Meyer No. 8 — produced 100 barrels of high quality oil. PIONEER — Anaheim's pioneer oil man, Von Stroble, may not have gained fame or fortune, but he was on the right track. There was oil where he drilled—but LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
