Danson Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Above all things have charity among yourselves.—I Peter 4:8. CALIFORNIANA — Father Junipero Serra, father president of the California missions, died at San Carlos Borromeo, Aug. 28, 1784. He was born at Petra on the Island of Mallorca, Spain, Nov. 24, 1713. With the expulsion of the Jesuits from Mexico in 1767, the Franciscans were given the jurisdiction over the missions in Baja, California. He worked for two years on these missions and then, in 1767, left to found the missions in Alta, California. He personally established six of these missions—one of which was San Juan Capistrano. Orange county's old adobe mission was originally founded, Oct. 30, 1775, but was abandoned a week later when news was received Father Luis Jaume was massacred in an Indian uprising in San Diego. The mission named for Saint John Capistran actually began Nov. 1, 1776, under Serra and Fra. Gregorio Amurrio. LINES-O-FYPE—E. W. Moeller, the Chamber of Commerce impresario, missed a bet by not having Anaheim be the home of a championship girls' softball team. Over at Orange, Elwood Case, Chamber manager, finds doing Chamber of Commerce missionary work a pleasant duty—especially when the Lionnettes help him put Orange on the map... Larry Fischbeck did all right by himself at the Orange county fair. The boy is mechanically inclined... Ronald Korn seems to be fascinated by wheelbarrows. No one who has pushed those man-power dump truck is though... Jack Dutton has a new interest—a chimpanzee. He used to be part owner of Serano, the educated boss... Donald Stettler, Anaheim's Fuller Brush man, discovered that someone isn't satisfied with "free samples"—they helped themselves to his stock in his car... UH-HUH—them there moom picture publicity accelerators are doing a good job in behalf of Paula Doretti. They're getting the Anaheim gal a good publicity break in the metro dailies. Here's a sample from Dick Williams' collyum: CLOSE-UPS: Anaheim's No. 1 source of publicity, 19-year-old Paula Doretty who in her time has been everything from Miss Jet at El Toro Marine bast to Miss Skyrocket at Santa Ana, is now in the movies. Following a bit in "3000 A.D." she's set for a good part in "Hello Girl," a semimusical in color but first about telephone operators. Paula has been attracting national photographers like a swarm of bees because she has a Jane Russell figure despite being otherwise just 5 foot 2 with a 22-inch waistline.
